Some advice on engine replacement / upgrade
Smokeyyank replied to Far McKon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I did a rebuild in my XJ I paid 2500 for everything including r&r. That was several years ago, but I had my 4.7HO rebuilt recently in my WJ and that was 5k with r&r, but it's a more expensive engine to work on. I think it's a little high price wise, but look online at some of the long blocks should get you an answer. Its not a crazy labor intense process. The 4.7 was an absolute B. As for needing a rebuild from overheat hard to say. I overheated my 88 drove home about 10ish minutes. I've been about 25k since then without issues. 4.0 can take some abuse. -
Nice WJ! I love my WJ and the 4.7HO is a beast. I bought mine with a blown 4.7HO and had it rebuilt, depending on what you'd paid not the worst idea to be proactive and have the heads worked to pin the valve seats since that is what kills these along with the oil drain hole causing issues. Rebuilds aren't cheap and is an absolute B to get out. I ditched my 247 for a 242, I lucked out with open axles, not a fan of variloks but they aren't terrible. Just make sure to use the correct fluid in the diffs. If it has dual zone climate control you may eventually have blend door issues. If you have issues with door locks, windows or other random shenanigan's known problem that the wires in the door boots get pinched and cause issues. Otherwise not a lot that happens with them.

Most times its the 6/12 rule, unless your county/state has different codes.

Just a quick peek on Hemmings. I know not close to yours as far as specs but mostly stock. Has new listing and previous sold ones. Some are stupid money.

Power steering refresh
Smokeyyank replied to Smokeyyank's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank, but looks like they shut down. Tried calling and number is not in service. Did find another place in Englewood that does rebuilds. $200 for the gear and $75 for the pump. -
Power steering refresh
Smokeyyank replied to Smokeyyank's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks, I'd be interested if you have it. Otherwise probably do a redhead gear. Yeah Durango gear works. I ran one on my XJ, really liked it but killed it. Broke at the unibody and ended up scrapping it. -
The 88 is in need of a power steering refresh. Pump is howling and it's leaking. What's the recommended parts for doing this? I've seen some info about HO pumps, no interest in a WJ pump. If something is a easy upgrade all for it but not wanting to swap a bunch of things to make it work. Right now it's stock but the eventual goal is 33s but 0 offroading. Also any brand recommendations? Ive always had good luck with lares but RA is showing out of stock. Going to keep looking but any suggestions are welcome.

Scope creep sucks. It's hard to get around especially on things that aren't really "needed". Tough to find the motivation sometimes to accomplish things and if you got a pile of parts and project even tougher. For me personally I'm a huge fan of list and laying out all the main categories, then putting in subsets for those. From there dabble in finding things that might relate or kind of go together. So it keeps projects kind of together and a little less daunting. When you write down all the things you start to see how much has to be done and it gets discouraging, but putting those in subcategory's make it look like les . I've also learned that it's best to have all your parts prior to tearing stuff apart because that is how projects stay unfinished. Nothing worse than just kamikazeing into a project only to realize it's more work than you where ready for or not enough money to finish. Try to focus on some smaller projects to build some motivation, than maybe another project that's more fun but not needed, like new stereo versus replacing a brake booster.

He's a little "high" on that price. Probably closer to 10-12k IMHO. Nice truck but just not a 25k nice one.

Powered Subwoofer Location help

It should work, only other thing to consider is making sure what ever it's mounted to is secure so it doesn't rattle. -
Under powered/over geared or Plentiful power?
Smokeyyank replied to Swampy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I won't ever do anything to my mj engine wise other than a rebuild when it comes, but I am building my WJ. It already has the 4.7HO V8 and I'll be running 37s with 4.88. I didn't want to go deeper because I still want to drive it on the road with out rapping at 2500 doing 70. Plus it has plenty of power to start. If I had the 4.0 Id either sell it for a v8 to LS swap. 4.0s just a turd in a WJ. Great in a XJ/MJ though. IMHO I'd go off tire size. If you're staying 35s max, I'd go with deeper gearing with a 4.0 rebuild (money aside LS without a doubt). I wouldn't do a stroker or boosted. If you're 37s+ LS swap. -

Good to know. Any ones that are more difficult to install?

Bringing this back up. Need to replace all the seals on my 92. Saw a few things in searching. Would the precision kit above be the go to or?
