General tuneup usually runs a little under $100 to do yourself. I'd expect at least double that for a shop to do it if not more. What about your son? Now is a good time for him to learn the basics of his new vehicle.

Yeah the raffle was Shelbyluv. Had no idea he ended up selling it on eBay. Forgot entirely of the raffle, bummer we couldn't make it happen to support CC.

Post lift tire location problem

That's a good point. I haven't seen anyone else with this issue after getting these springs so idk if people don't pay attention or they just haven't sold any recently. I agree with you, send them back and order from someone else. -

I'm completely at a loss as well. Doesn't make sense at all. Will the axle even hit the bump stops correctly when it bottoms out or is it too far forward? How is your springs bolted to the axle? Maybe take some more pictures of the underside and maybe someone will spot something out of place. According to your measurements in the first post, the springs should be the correct size but I don't see how it pulled the axle so far forward. It's definitely not sitting right.. -
Oem rear bumpers seem to be hard to find for the MJ, at least in good condition. A good and popular alternative if you can't find an OEM is the FEY diamondstep bumper. Just have to get one with the MJ specific brackets. Runs $200 at the high end.

Just for reference, here is a pretty awesome leaf spring measurement chart I just came across. I'm sure this will benefit other members as well. http://littlekeylime.com/MrN/mrnimages/leaf_springs.png Sent from my HTC U11 using Tapatalk -

Right but they didn't fold towards the front after you lowered the truck off the jack? Here is a better picture to explain what I'm talking about. https://goo.gl/images/g33NkQ You sure they are MJ leafs and not XJ leafs? They are different sizes and often XJ parts are sold as MJ even though they aren't the same. What is the measurement from eye to eye straight across? XJs are 51.5" across and MJs are 57" -

They aren't inverted are they? They should fold towards the rear of the truck. https://goo.gl/images/BXWu7G -

Do you have all the trucks weight on it? It definitely shouldn't be that far forward. You sure you didn't put the leafs on backwards? IIRC the larger end should go toward the front in the body mount, and the smaller end in the shackle. Here is mine after a 4.5" Rusty's kit. Sits right in the middle. -
Wow I can't believe it has been almost 2 months since I've posted anything about the truck. In all honesty I haven't really done anything to it since the last post but enjoy it. I do want to quickly mention something I had forgot before and just realized. At the beginning of September I received my new wheel stickers from Lucas7667 and they look great. 2 months later they are still holding up strong. Anyway back to what has happened since the last post. I have really only been driving and enjoying the truck. About a month ago we had a few days of heavy rain that a few buddies and I took advantage of one night. We went mudding on 6 different level B roads and the truck did fantastic. I could hardly see where I was going between the foggy windows and the mud and heavy rain on the windshield but it was an absolute blast. The good that came out of it was that none of us got stuck or broke anything, a guy in a super built Wrangler JK at a gas station thought my truck was awesome, and I learned all the areas and crevices mud finds its way into. At one point I did end up having a waterfall inside the cab coming down right onto the center console behind the shifter. It only happened for about a minute and only during an absolute torrential rainfall, like hurricane level rainfall. It obviously leaks and the dirt trail led back up to the windshield so I will have to reseal that at some point. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures. It was dark when we were mudding and I was more worried about getting the truck washed the day after. Other than that it has gone around out on the property a few times, I was driving it to work pretty regularly for a while, and I used it to help some friends move to their new house last weekend. I have decided to put it away for the winter because I am not about to take a rust free Comanche out on salted roads. I will take it out to play in the snow on the property however so there may be a post or two about that but don't expect much until Spring. I do hope to get some work done to it over the Winter but I do plan on hitting it hard in the Spring and get some major work done to it.

I can't stop coming back to look at the XJ camper. It would be a perfect candidate since you can seat 4 comfortably and fold down the back seats to create more sleeping areas or a larger storage area when parked.

Personally Id say this isn't a bad idea. It will open the door for more non-MJ owners to get involved in the mechanics portion and bring in new faces and new tips and tricks that the gurus currently here havn't come across yet. As was stated a few posts back, many of the Jeeps from the 80s and 90s shared mechanical parts so broadening the 'tech' section slightly may benefit us all.

I do want to say that I agree with everyone above that the MJOTM should be the featured thing on the front page, maybe pin that to the top of the page for the month and have a rolling feed below for the stuff going on and anything new that is added to the page. Rather than having the front page be literally a list of all the MJOTM, make the current one the feature on the page with the directory of passed MJOTM linked to elsewhere.

I think the even better question is, what do you want this site to be Pete? Currently it's the most fantastic Jeep forum, but I feel like I've seen you post previously about wanting to get more eyes on the site and make it more involved for people who don't even own an MJ. Am I correct with that or just making things up in my mind? I do have to agree that the format now is great and does exactly what we need it to, but to grow and get more people involved and stay involved in MJs and Jeeps in general, especially on ComancheClub, things have to change over time.
-
That's unfortunate. It's awesome to see what you've been capable doing with these. I think the legal stuff on this is dumb but do agree that it isn't worth the risk. I do have one question though. Would it be possible to sell "kits" to convert one of these to Bluetooth? That way the end user is doing the modification rather than you. Or even you do the more difficult parts of the modification and leave it up to the end user to finish it off to make it work? I've seen many products and companies getting around legal things by doing this. Any way something like that would work? Are there Bluetooth modules that would work in these radios that are already licensed and rated and whatnot that would get you around it? I know I'm dropping into kind of a potential gray area but I don't want to see you lose your progress.

That convoluted mess of a half dormant website will never compare to the structure and awesomeness that is Comanche Club!
-
Exactly what Minuit said. I look at it once a month, when the MJOTM comes out. We gotta get more things flowing on there and get more traffic to the site in general.
-
I think it would be cool if we had fun stuff to look at that greeted anyone new who looked at the site. Also would be nice if there was content that changed on a more regular basis than the MJOTM. Examples I can think of: - Information and history of the Comanche similar to what the wiki page has, including the images of the truck and other Jeeps from that French website that was posted a while back - Info on stuff like the archer brothers trucks and other racing/famous comanches - General Jeep news section maybe? - Feature ads/posts on a rotation for the members selling things in the "Vendors" section, especially when they have sales going on. - Showcase events and meet-ups that are going on. - "This day in Jeep History" post anytime a major Jeep milestone hits. Such as the anniversary of the release of the MJ, the day the Willys MB climbed the stairs of the white house, etc. - The History of Jeep section

Plastic steering wheel cover
Dzimm replied to pfloyd32086's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would agree with the above. Only take it apart if it is wobbly and needs fixed anyway. Otherwise do what Cruiser said, tape it off and paint it. In addition to reading the thread about the loose column fix, check NickInTimeFilm's video on YouTube where he does this fix. It's the same guy who makes the REM tool all the Renix guys love. -
A change in diff fluid certainly couldn't hurt. The fluid change may reveal an issue within the axle so it would be a good starting point. Have you jacked up the truck and checked for play in the wheels? Try jacking it up, turning the steering to the left and spin the wheels to see if you can recreate the noise.

"step one" "step b"????? Idk why but I got a quick laugh out of that one.

I spent a lot of time looking into this topic and there is no "proof" of any oil being better than the other. It's all here-say based on peoples opinions. In reality the "thicker oil trick" is leftover from the mechanics of the old days when engine tolerances changed a great deal over time. Nowadays those tolerances don't change nearly as much (even on the 4.0L), and if the tolerances on this engine are to the point of needing thicker oil, it's time for a rebuild anyway, the thicker oil is just a bandaid to limp it along and mask the terrible noises. The engineers of this engine say to run 10w-30 in the 4.0L so that's what I do, but I use a GOOD quality oil. As long as the engine runs good and you aren't leaking oil out if every possible place on the engine, it isn't too thin. I wouldn't recommend running full synthetic in these engines though because it is slightly thinner and seems to thin out over time. Conventional oil is thicker and what was available when this engine was built so that's what the engineers built it based on. I personally have always used a synthetic blend and never had issues. In summary it all comes down to proper maintenance and using a good quality oil. If the engine is still running strong, you've been doing something right, why change it?

I don't see why the aftermarket would be any worse than Mopar. What are the cfm rated at for the aftermarket? If it were me, I'd go aftermarket but honestly, ive never had my auxiliary fan kick on in any of my XJs or MJs unless I hook them straight to the battery so I've never even experienced what the aux fan is like either Mopar or aftermarket.
