  1. Can be a 207 or a 228. There should be a round tag attached to the rear of the case. If it's missing see what it says on the plastic indicator on the shift indicator. If it's a Command Trac you have a 207. If it's a Select trac you have a 228.There should also be a instruction label on the glove box door or the driver side sun visor.
  2. 1986 MJ, 4WD. I believe I already know the answer to this but hoping against hope there's a better way. I'm swapping the header panel for one off a '88Wagoneer. I was going to remove it anyway to get more working room swapping engines. It looks like the 2 bolts on each side goes thru the fender into the header. and not thru the header into the fender like on later models. Do I have to remove the inner fender liners to get to them? I'm also swapping in a '97 Vortec for the 2.8. which is now air cooled, thanks to the rather large hole in the oil pan. Since the Vortec has the Chevy bolt pattern, I'm also swapping the AX5 for a '95 5speed and transfer case from a '95 S10. Making up for any misfits with the drive shafts. It's hot here. Had to quit and take a break. Right now I just need help on the removal of the header.
  3. I studied those pics until my eyeballs got tired. I didn't see anything wrong with it.
  4. There are two different springs on the clutch pedal. A strong one and a weaker one. In the 'Power' position the stronger spring is used, bringing the clutch pedal up faster. In the 'comfort' position the weaker spring is used requiring less foot pressure. Thank you for the icon..
  5. It's a moot point now. I just stuck a couple Ben Franklins in my pocket and watched it disappear down the driveway. Good riddance.
  6. I have a daughter, and a couple grandkids living in Phoenix. Planning on visiting them this summer. If you still have it I'll take it.
  7. Main thing here is to get the drill started dead center. Other wise you will be drilling into the nut threads. Rather than drilling up into the upper frame and using longer bolts, I would drill and tap for the next larger diameter bolt. Another alternative would be to drill out the old bolt and if you can't salvage the old nut then use another one, nut, on top of the old one.
  8. Check and see if you're getting +12V at the switch.
  9. Originally I just dropped to one knee and looked under the bumper. This morning I raised it up on a ramp and crawled under it, getting a better look at everything. I'm dropping the whole idea.
  10. Right now I'm in the process of adding AC to '89 XJ so the GF will drive it and not bug me about the heat. The PO owner had removed it for some reason. I'm lucky tho as he only removed everything from the drier forward, leaving the drier and all components under the dash.
  11. Back when mechanics were real men and not glorified computer analysts the vacuum gauge was one of their most useful tools for analyzing an ailing engine. They were also a valuable aide for knowledgeable drivers wanting to get the most out of their machine. How come there's no icon of a soap box?
  12. Like eating peanuts. Can't stop with just one.
  13. This thing looks heavy enough to work under a deuce and half. I'll see if I can't get a pic and or ID it tomorrow. It's got the same shape as the rear 8.8.
  14. This is weird. About a week ago I was at the P&P and under the hood of a chrysler I found a 6 inch crescent wrench. Picked it up and on one side the initials KC was etched. On the other side the whole name Kacy Casebier. That was my best buddy. We've been friends since we were 12 years old. He died 2 years ago. I know for a fact he never owned that car. How that wrench got there has been bugging me ever since. I figure the most likely possibility is he loaned the wrench to somebody or he lost it and they found it, or his wife gave it to someone when she was giving all his stuff away. Weird.
  15. Has anybody ever mounted a Ford front axle under a Jeep? I recently got a '94 Explorer for the sole purpose of installing the 8.8 rear axle under a MJ. Been looking at it and that axle, front, looks like it would make a good one for a 4wd conversion. Thinking about using both axles for a 4wd conversion. Just wondering.

    Cleaning Out

I'm trying to clean the garage up , why do I hear the song, 'The impossible dream' in the back ground Goal being maybe I can find something. If anybody has any use for some junk, er, used good stuff drop by. It's yours. Bring a truck.
  18. If it isn't to low, the engine is bucking and idling rough, or to high then it's right. Every engine has it's own 'sweet spot' for idling and cruising. I've found around 600 rpm to be close enough for government work.
  19. When I was running my garage there were only two auto parts store in town. Big A and NAPA. I dealt evenly between the two for 3-4 months before dealing only with the Big A. Parts quality between the two was equal. The difference was in the personal behind the counter. At NAPA it was " what do you want?" At Big A it was " Hey Jim. How ya doing? The owner was really interested in me and how my business was doing.
  20. Just ordered 2 sets from Rock Auto. They had 2 sets left and were having a special close out price. First time I ever did business with them. We'll see.
  21. Now that my memories been refreshed, the book says use a pin gauge and check the clearance between the starter gear and ring gear. That is hard to do. I just start adding shims until any noise goes away. That is, it sounds right when engaging.
  22. AWWW S,,,,,,. Go easy on me. I've had a hard day. I got up this morning.
  23. You can only shim a starter when it attaches to the block sideways, ala Chevy. The Jeep attaches from the front and to the best my knowledge cannot be shimmed. Check the solenoid attached to the top of the and make sure it's not sticking. Also check the starter over run clutch, that it's not sticking.
  24. I recently replaced the clutch MC with one I got at Auto Zone. BIG MISTAKE! After getting it home I noticed it was made in China. If I had noticed that at the store I would have never got it. After a week it's leaking worse than the one it replaced. Anybody know where I could get a rebuild kit for these at? I can't find nuttin with search. :dunno:
