Anyone Have Manual Steering On A 4.0 Mj?
mnkyboy replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had it on my 2.5L,driving on the road wasnt bad even with 33s but low speed turning and offroad sucked. IMO powersteering was on of the best things I did to my MJ. Are you wanting to remove it? -
My winch setup is something that would have to be built onto a rig. It would be hard to ship as a bolt on. Just the bumper without the winch box would be around $300
-
Looks like its coming along pretty good. Not quite as extreme as I chopped mine, I only took 16" off mine but being a short box its bobbed a lot further.

There was one in similar condition that sat on craigslist for about a year, the guy was asking $400 for it. At this point as a truck its worth whatever local scrap price is, you would be better off parting it out or finishing it.

Another nice thing with Claytons is you can easily upgrade from radius arms to 3 link later on. Just install the 3 link conversion kit and remove the upper Y links.

Dana 44 Axle Bearing And Seal
mnkyboy replied to airspeed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Some clarification since I have been messaged on this. I made a weld on caliper mount on the axle tube so I was able to simply use part of the backing plates to fill the gap were the backing plate would normally be. When doing a brake conversion with a bolt on caliper mount like the ZJ or 8.8" the caliper mount is thicker then the original backing plate so you need to buy or make a preload shim to make up for the extra thickness of the caliper bracket. -
I don't care for radius arms but if I were to buy one it would be Claytons. The last one I would buy would be the IRO. I know some people are happy with them but there single upper and goofy cam adjuster is too sketchy for me. I also don't like the idea of one 10mm bolt holding my axle in place.

Mnkyboys 89 Comanche project
mnkyboy replied to mnkyboy's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Today I finally got my electric fans wired up, got my wireless winch control hooked up and installed some LED license plate lights. I wired the fans to a TS155 temp switch, should turn on around 212º and off around 192º. I'm hoping that works good.- 798 replies

The rear will. When you go around a corner you have to let off the throttle to unlock the locker, this isnt always possible so you end up dragging a tire sometimes. You just figure anytime one tire has to spin faster then the other it won't always be able to and you will get some tire wear. If you drive on the road a lot you probably want an LSD rather then an auto locker. Unless you can afford selectable lockers which can be turned on and off manualy.
-
Which one?
-
The front one is invisible in 2wd so its fine on the road. The rear one takes some getting use to. Selectible lockers would be best on the road but they are not in everybody's budget. Yes it will burn both tires on pavement .

Trany And Tcase Swap Question
mnkyboy replied to 88mj2.5's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not sure, I started car pooling just before I did the gears so it doesnt see much time on the road anymore. I would guess 18-20mpg but fuel mileage tends to average a little lower here due to terrain and our ethanol blend gas. -
Trany And Tcase Swap Question
mnkyboy replied to 88mj2.5's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm at 4.88 now and it finally feels like I could use 5th. -
Now you got my gears turning. I have a 2.3l external slave bellhousing off a T5 from a turbo coupe,I bet it wouldnt be hard to make it fit the AX15.
-
I already have an AX15 waiting to go in, I'm probably just going to buy the adapter kit though. Ive been looking for the Dakota stuff but I havent found any good deals. The 2.3l is probably stronger then the 2.5l and it already has forged pistons but stock they only run about 9psi which I think the 2.5l should be able to handle. I could put a 2.5 Ford crank in the 2.3l and put it in, then I would still have a 2.5l but then I have to come up with a transmission or figure out how to adapt the ford engine to my ax15.
-
I have a 2.3l turbo just sitting, I was swapping it into a Datsun 1200. I have all the mounts and already made the wiring harness, I ended up selling the car but kept everything. I thought about swapping it into the MJ but now I'm leaning towards using the engine management on my 2.5l with the turbo. I should be able to use the Ford injection with a mpfi 2.5 manifold, I just have to figure out the best way to go about hybriding the distributor so I can run the ford tfi.

With 3.55s and 33" tires I rarely could use 4th gear. -

Trany And Tcase Swap Question
mnkyboy replied to 88mj2.5's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The clocking of the t-case will be a little different but it should fit. -
Drive in much soft sand? First thing you typically do is airdown.
-
I could see that posted here for that much, I just checked my local craiglist and theres similar rigs posted for as much and some even more. But then theres a few late model XJs right around $2000. You just have to shop around for a good deal. Its amazing how much prices can vary on them.
-
Seems steep, its probably a $450 RC lift and 8500lb superwinch is only $299. IMO you should be able to buy a nice stocker and build the same rig for a lot less.
