The spartan is invisible in 2wd with or without a disco. Unless someone has deleted it or swapped in a later XJ axle you most likely have a CAD. This also means you have 260 u joints in your axle,I suggest if you want a locker you should look into getting rid of the CAD and get some one piece shafts with bigger u joints. Or at least track down some 95 YJ cad shafts with the larger 297 u joints. The 260s won't like the added stress of a locker. The biggest advantage to a full case locker is it is much stronger then the stock carrier which helps with gear deflection which can be an issue in the D30.

When I was pricing my lockers the Aussie came out the same as the Spartans once you factor in shipping. I was just looking and it would be $275 shipped for the Aussie, which is a little more then I payed for the Spartan. But it appears the spartans have gone up a lot since I bought mine.

Ive found the swap done in XJs, it doesnt seem too bad. Most of the complications will be my choice, most people swap in the 700r4 with it but I want to use the AX15 so I have to adapt it and work out the clutch but other wise it shouldnt be bad.- 798 replies

Wouldnt be that bad if I had a money tree, looks like most of the parts are available to make it pretty easy. But since I don't have a money tree your right it will probably be a crapload of work.- 798 replies

So last weekend I got a 23spline 231 for my AX15 swap, I also picked up a SYE and a GM 231 to rob the 6 pinion planetary and thick chain. The guy I got the GM case from also offered to sell me a 4.3l, ecu, and wiring for cheap. I'm thinking rather then adapt my AX15 to the 2.5l I might just adapt it to a 4.3l instead.- 798 replies

In that price range I would go with a Spartan or an Aussie.

IIRC the lowers were almost long enough to link an MJ using the stock leaf spring mount. -
Best Rear End Swap Out For A Stock Dana 35 And Gears
mnkyboy replied to Bmoore2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you buy a full case locker it will replace the carrier so you won't need one. Also if you go with a lunch box type locker you will need a carrier but you won't need spider gears. There is no thick gears that I know of for the D30. -
You can get lockers that can be turned on and off but they are spendy. Auto lockers are fine up front if you don't use 4wd a lot on the road in ice and snow. In 2wd they are invisible. The biggest con is that they put more stress on the axle so you will probably want to at least upgrade shafts to ones with stronger u joints. The pro is you will be able to climb up about anything you can get a tire on.

I think the same thing everytime someone says that Jeep should make another truck. I think people forget that Chrysler did not make the MJ or XJ or most of the other Jeeps we like. Even the wranglers are just carrying on a tradition that has nothing to do with Chrysler.

I have a set I could measure,I think they would be way too long. -
The front looks like a Jeepish skin draped over another small car.

3.5"-4" TJ fron shocks do cross to a 4.5"-5" MJ/XJ shock. They are the same part number. What I'm not understanding is why would you look up a shock for a TJ rather then for an MJ/XJ?
-
It would have a ba10/5 or an ax15 behind a 4.0l. The 2.5l had the ax4 and ax5.
-
I doubt TJ shocks would even be close to long enough. Especially the rear.

Ive got 33s on mine. On road they feel like a little too much gear, offroad I sometimes wish I had more gear. On the freeway I could use a 5th gear. I can't wait to get my AX15swapped in. I think 35s would drive fine with 4.88s.according to the gearing charts 37s would be close to stock ratio so once you compensate for drag and the weight of the bigger tires which the charts don't account for I think 35s would be the ideal tire size.- 798 replies

Most Reliable Axle Swap Possible
mnkyboy replied to tcw0409's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
8.8" is a little narrower and a waggy is a little wider. For an expedition rig I would do 33s with an XJ non cad D30 with 297 jounts and a Xj/MJD44, Ford 8.8", or XJ 8.25 with 29 spline shafts and be done. -
Most Reliable Axle Swap Possible
mnkyboy replied to tcw0409's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Kind of a vague question. You say DD but what about offroad? Will this be a mall crawler or a southern rock bouncer. A D30/D35 can be built to run 35s on the street. -
That kit won't work very well if you plan to go offroad. It uses weak stock arms and unbraced drop brackets. You figure $575 then add shipping cost then add quality adjustable arms and drop bracket braces you will probably be over a grand.
-
The BDS looks more complete for its lift height. The zone you will still need shocks and should get an adjustable trac bar.
-
No, the wj arms are stock length,RRO has longer fixed length arms for lifted rigs and they also have adjustable arms with Curry Johny joints. If he doesnt have them its not a huge deal, you can get adjustable arms from a lot of companies.
-
The biggest issue is the ring and pinion, you can make a D35 as strong or maybe stronger then a stock D44 other then the centersection. I actually beat the crap out of my stock non c clip D35 and it refused to die.
