Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Eh... I can hear the turbo. That is real quiet. The best way to describe this sound in person is maybe like a hydrostatic trans under load? Like the fluid groan? That noise, but I have no idea where it's coming from. Rebelfish99 told me it was doing that ever since he had it after sending him the video, so... Maybe not something I am going to worry about so much. Rob :dunno: -
Snow was once a beautiful thing. Now it is just another headache that I have to deal with at work. I miss the days when I could just watch it fall. I spend days under them fixing leaks, fighting rust, and taking salt water baths. Not fun. Rob

When was the last time you drove a Wrangler or CJ?

Been a couple years since I sold my '83 CJ-8. Lots of fun, but not in the rust dept. Rob -
Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Played with it a bit today. Learned that the bigger of my oil leaks is the remote mount filter/oil cooler adapter coming off the block. Also, surprisingly, it started idling better all by itself... Hmm. It seems like the more I play with it, the better it runs. VxB1bbLTXcA Last night I had it out for about 5 miles, and it started making a new noise to me. It's really all new to me, but it sounds like a hum or groan... I don't know what RPM specifically, but on the broken tach it seems to start around the 5K mark, and really gets noticeable around the 6K mark... Diesel owners, does this sound normal? Nothing is shaking any weirder, the oil pressure is great, and it doesn't act any different... xrHd5ZlARAQ It sure is fun to play with... I'm thinking I might try to drive it to work tomorrow... about 10 miles. Bit nervous. Rob -

Drove it. For once. Rob

Usually to cope with stress I go to a happy place. For me it could be a long drive to no-where. Crank some tunes, pick a road, and follow it until it ends or I want to call it a night. Sometimes I just like to find a quiet corner of the house, or garage, sit down with a few beers, and stare at the wall. Another favorite thing to do is call up someone from the club and hit up the yard. Picking through some old cars is relaxing to me, and if I have someone I could talk Jeeps with, it takes my mind off things at hand, or helps me talk them out. I normally keep a pretty straight head so it doesn't happen often. I try to find the upside to things, or use my mantra, "It could always be worse." Rob

So much for the easy setup. Manual install it is. Should have done that in the first place. Speed test: 13.93 MBPS Down 3.20 MBPS Up Thanks for the advice along the way fellas! I'm now riding the cable superhighway! Rob :typing:

Wireless finally got here... So much for the painless install. When running the linksys setup, it "Cannot connect to the router. Check that the router has been connected to the computer, and that the ethernet adapter is working." Rob :hateputers:

While I have thought of the cart, I don't like the idea. Depending on the conditions, the cart would get caught in the mud, snow, junk... Plus, I like the mobility of just having whatever I need on my person when I am scouting parts out. Pete, I have done like you suggested, and just go back to the vehicle to get the tools, but that sucks too. Especially on some of the bigger yards I go to. I don't want to be in the back of the yard, or find something I know others might go for, and then have to trudge all the way back. Rob

Just curious what you guys take along with you to the junk yards. I have a medium sized ammo box that can hold quite a bit of tools, and has never let me down. The problem is that it gets heavy quick when you have to lug it around by the handle up top. I usually look for a serpentine belt as soon as I get in, and make a shoulder strap for it. Toss a loop around the handle, tie a knot on the other end to keep it at hip level, and toss it over my head and across my body. The biggest drag is the box isn't exactly soft and usually digs into my hip, and everything is jumbled up in it. The box, and what I usually have in it: All the hand tools go into it, I carry my BFH and the BF pry bar. (Don't mind the emblem(Just knocking around in there), jack, drill, cables, or bits.)Part of the problem is that I don't have a place to put the bigger pry bar, and the hammer. So on top of the box, I am juggling with the two other carry alongs. What really gets daunting is when I am at a traditional yard without carts or wagons to grab parts. Once I had an MJ bench and all the black interior pieces in it, tool box, and all sorts of stuff I was trying to juggle. What I would like to do, or what I am thinking about, is like a canvas messenger bag. Preferably some sort of a surplus bag, so it's made to take the weight of the tools, and have a good shoulder strap to get the weight up. I like the idea of a messenger style bag over a back pack because I could keep it on my shoulder and off the mud/wet/snow while still being able to rifle through it for tools. Plus, if it's a surplus bag, chances are it will be full of pockets, dividers, and compartments. Also, no plastic clips to break. Just a belt-style strap with a metal buckle. In order to possibly get some more ideas, I wanted to see what you guys were using at the yards. Rob

Interior Plastic Part Restoration
Automan2164 replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would think that this would potentially dry out and crack a dash or arm rest pad. And dying a factory black piece? Blasphemous. :D I use Turtle Wax interior cleaner, it smells great (Really!) and usually hangs around for awhile. As for a restorer, I did a google search, and came up with a few things, looks like 3M makes a product. Bit expensive, but the 3M name is pretty good, and if it weren't selling, they wouldn't be able to ask a price like they are. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 ... 5489090502 Rob -
:rotf: Yea, running shoes. That really sucks. :clapping: Rob, Excellent find. I can't stop looking. Are those factory floor mats? They look like they are in better shape than the carpet. I would have pulled that crap if I ran across it. I see that you got a set of nice door panels with the carpet/map pockets and hocky stick arm rests. Quick question for you. Those came with chrome trim rings behind the arm rests which you pulled. Did that XJ have the smaller chrome trim behind the handle part of the armrest? Mine had those door panels from the factory but I thought they had both pieces of chrome trim at one time. I wonder the smaller chrome piece was lost at the body shop. I picked up a new set at a JY a couple of weeks ago. can't remember if mine had it or not. Old age. :shake: Sadly, the arm rests were already gone. I can't say for sure if they had the smaller little chrome backer under the one end, but I know it had one under the main part. When looking at the imprint on the door, it doesn't look like it had the second piece. Aren't your door panels the matched fabric ones? Rob

Well, I'm not one for the black Friday shopping unless its a smoking deal I can't pass up. This year was pretty dry on the deals, so I decided to pass. The local LKQ was having their own black Friday weekend, and offered half off of everything they have. It usually gets pretty nuts during these sales, so I didn't plan on grabbing much, just checking to see if there was anything worth the time. Loaded up the roommate, and hit the yard early. First Chrysler row we went down had an '87 Cherokee. BING! Black interior, in good shape. After a little time, we had it out and loaded on the cart. Chris learned some stuff about the XJ as we were sacrificing it, and pulling everything seats-forward. We chatted with some Jeep guys, and had some laughs pulling everything out. Someone had already went through it, and grabbed all the door armrests, the drivers seat, and seat belt. The rest was ours. Tons of little trim buttons, handles, and all sorts of good stuff. Worst spot of the dash. Someone who didn't know how to get the headlight switch out just destroyed it. With a little epoxy, I should be able to fix the structure, and with a little messing around, I should be able to lessen the damage to the skin. Idiots. Carpet was actually in pretty good shape, and I couldn't leave it behind. Little simple green and a trip to the car wash should have it right as rain. Had the upgraded door panels with the hockey sticks and map pockets. It's a shame that someone who was trying to get at the drivers mirror ripped the edge. Should be repairable with a vinyl repair kit. The one seat: A lot of stuff was broken, including the center console insert. I didn't grab it. The back of the outside trim and the lid were broken off... Again, with some creative epoxy, you won't even notice the trim, and the lid should just screw right back on with a new hinge. Little upgrade for the Diesel. This one has FM! All in all a good haul, especially considering the price, $66 for all of it. Everything got better when we stopped at the Tilted Kilt for some Burgers and beer though. Good trip. Rob

Still waiting on the router because of the holiday, but a quick run of the speed test on the hardline is: 21.49 MBPS down 3.14 MBPS up Not too shabby. Now if the wireless would just get here. Rob

Sorry to hear that. Never a good thing. Another young member too. Rob -
Check it for clutch master syndrome, which is what we call it when you start having gremlins with the electrical system as a result of the master leaking down the interior firewall all over the fusebox. With the PO wiring in a switch for the tails, it sounds like that might be a possibility. The fluid is caustic to the plastic, and messes everything up. Rob
