Quick paint question:
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
He wants me to take it down to bare steel, but was contemplating getting away with sand/paint depending on how the factory paint was. Being that our trucks have a ton of clear coat failures, it might be best to take it down and not rely on the factory job for adhesion. Rob L. -
Just a quick paint question for y'all. I am looking to paint the Farmer, and my boss who is going to be helping me re-do it, had a question as to what type/method was used from the factory as far as paint goes. I honestly don't know. He was curious if there was a clear, or just base coat... yadda yadda... Paint isn't my thing. '87 MJ: Thanks fellas. Rob L.

Rick, you know we are always here for you brother. You are one of us old codgers that's been on cc since its infancy back on the yahoo group. I've gotten christmas cards from you and cin back when I was at ma's, as well as a personalized collection of all of your favorite classic rock tunes on what seemed like 20 CD's, and all MP3's at that... There was HOURS per CD. I still have them in a stack in the corner, and although I don't have them uploaded on anything I can still remember unboxing those, throwing them in, and taking a trip with you through the music. I still smile when I move them to get to something else, and set them aside. In fact: Come to think of it, that had to be almost 10 years ago Rick. I was in high school, had just gotten the ol' '86, and just playing around with things and learning. You still had the ol' 4 banger, and incredible pictures of your truck overlooking Canyons and Plateau's. When I read the story from Pete, and the link over to the Colorado site, it really hit home. I couldn't help but toss some funds your way. Afterall, we all have those times when we could use a hand. Your a giving, caring person Rick. you've always shown that. Enjoy it brother. No repayment needed here. Consider it payment for a lesson in Rock. Rob L.

LKQ DISCOUNT WEEKEND!!! NOV 26-28th 2010!!!
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in Great Lakes
Making the list. So far I need to get a 3.73 D30, and a radiator for the ZJ. The backlash seems way out of whack on the current one, and its growling at me. The radiator seems to have a leak between the plastic and the aluminum, so thats on the bill too. Thermostat might be stuck open, but that I'll spring for new. Then if I see anything small to get for the MJ, I'll grab that. Don't know what I might want, but, I'll know it when I see it. And for those who don't know, or are new, here's the site with the price list. http://www.lkqselfserve.com/FindaLocati ... fault.aspx Rob L. :D -
Well, toss my iron back in the painting fire. My boss in the Fleet maintenance department used to paint cars on the side, and kinda gave me the pep talk. I told him I wanted to do a one step tractor paint if I was doing it myself, and he told me, "No. If your going to be taking it apart to that level, do it right. One stage color, and clear. After seeing how Brent hung his panels up, he told me I should do the same, and just do it in my garage. He still has all the body tools, I'm sure I could borrow some from Wadearino... But my boss seems to be willing to help in anyway he can. He told me I should be able to hang some plastic up in the garage with a space heater, and paint the doors, hood, fenders, and gate. Then pull the cab in, do that, and then the bed in another session. He said one day in the warm garage should be enough to set the paint and cure it. Seems to work in my head. I am going to bring him pictures of the worst parts of the truck tomorrow, and see what happens from there. What am I getting myself into... Rob L. :shake:

I would call him now. He sounded kinda like a sketchy dude. Remember to check the rear axle, and pull the VIN for the registry. Rob L.

Understand new Missouri Replacement of a motor law?

If you have emissions, do it. If not, who gives a flying squirrel. Rob L. :D -
YEP GET THERE MAN!!!! Curiosity got the best of me. Just got off the phone with the guy, he's selling it for a neighbor who is no good on computers. The neighbor said it was an '87, he has it listed as an '86. Don't ask me why. JUMP ON IT. Rob L  .

Yes, looks like a factory bar, but double check that he has the year right. Looking at it from the rear angle, it looks like a shortbed. Like, really looks like a shortbed. My guess, is that they know little about what they have... And $500 for that thing? In the words of whowey, "Puh-lease." Rob L.

I think you mean 2.73. If I remember correctly the final years of the Waggy only came with 2.73 and 3.31 if equipped with the towing package. You are correct sir. But still some friggen atrocious gears none the less. Even the optional gearset was gross. Rob L. :ack:

I'll have another one shortly (I hope). Rob L. ;)

I think the WORST part of that whole jeep is the Decals/badges. Paint, ok, rims, ok, if thats your style, but A. do all that crap to a limited, not a Laredo if you are going to spend the money, and B. If your already spending that much money, don't cheap out on the badges. Rob L.

For those who might know me, I am a bit weird. Well, a lot weird. And I like the weird and unusual. So... When I decided I wanted a TV in the garage, I had to break out the hunt for the weird. I couldn't have just any TV, so I kept my eyes peeled. Jeep made a Boombox in the late '90's, which had an AM/FM Radio, CD player, and LCD TV. They are pretty rare to find, even more rare to find in working order. Awhile ago, one came up, and I bid on it. Rough shape, no cord, untested. No other nutjob would dare touch it, so I got it for $1.00, plus $17.99 Shipping. Well, long story short, I am out $18.99, and have no boombox. :fs2: So, fast forward to when it was the worst possible time for one to come up, (when I had no monies), and here one is. Tested, working with power cord. I watched it for awhile, and at the last day, it was at $114 + shipping. No big deal, but I knew I wanted it, so I just figured I would throw a high number at it, so if anyone tried to nip away at the auction, they would get discouraged and give up. So, in went the bid for $210 at the last minute. Let me tell you, there is still a dent in the table from where my jaw hit it when the page refreshed. $202.50, and it was mine. As Will (whowey) said it while we were talking, "I don't know what surprises me more, the fact that you were willing to pay $200 for it, or that someone else was." Ha. Ha. Anywho, I got it all hooked up, and ready to turf into the garage. Enjoy. Its a nice little unit. The speakers are under the grilles at each end, its "water-resistant" and has rubber gaskets over all the doors, and the lid, as well as an old looking WWII tread style rubber bottom. The tuner looks like an old gauge from a Willys. The antenna stores in the bottom, and there's a port on the back for it too, if you want to use the radio while its raining and keep the lid shut. The TV isn't all that big, but I am really supposed to be working on the Jeep in there anyway, so its more or less to listen in, and grab a quick minute or two whole sitting at the box looking over tools/schematics. It works for what I need out of it. Recently, another one came up, untested, with no cord. I won that one also, but for a LOT less. $24 plus shipping. So once I get a cord sourced for that, I am going to toss it up in working order (I hope) or have another box for parts. Looking back at the whole mess, I could have used that $200 at Wally world, and bought one mean little LCD TV to hang in the garage, but hey, thats just not my style. Rob L.

They came from a late '80's / Early '90's Wrangler, Comanche, or Cherokee. Not sure on the size, I thought it was 15X7. Should be bolt on nonetheless. Rob L.

:agree: A vendor is someone they allowed to sell their product. If they didn't want someone to sell their product, they would not allow it. Simple as that. The problem lies with Rough country. Rob L.

Yep, and don't quote me on this, but I have never seen a LWB in SporTruck hockey trim, so, I would believe that it has to be a SWB. Rob L. :dunno:

 Yep, having someone else paint it Brent... Thanks... Lol. Rob L. :D

Umm... Slow down grasshoppa. Rob L. 8)

Think thats a short bed rollbar... This, is a longbed rollbar... Looks identical to the SWB one, except the back arm is longer/different angle. Rob L.

Maybe while your down to grab the Renix stuff, you could give me some pointers... I would like to do it myself, but I think the time has come and passed if those are the conditions you think it requires. Rob L.

Nipped away at it a bit more today, while waiting for the TV repair dude. Got the bumper off, drilled out the screws on the tails, took out the inner fender liners, removed the fuel lines, took off the towing mirrors, took out the wing windows, as well as pulled the trim out of the window opening. Just left the glass loose in the door for now. Everyday getting a little closer to paint... Hopefully, I can find someone cheap enough... I would like to do it myself, but at this point, I would rather just pay a guy to do it on the side so its done before the snow flies. That way I can spend the winter working on the engine and throwing everything together so come springtime... It'll be rolling on the rubber again. As of yet, I still have to pull the windshield, slider, gutter rails, door handles, loosen the fenders, take the bed loose, degrease the crap out of everything, and find a guy to paint it. So little bit more ahead before it starts coming back together. I'll just keep chugging away. Rob L.

Oregon plates... From looking at it, some would wonder if it could make it to Utah under its own power? I would have no doubt. In my midwestern eyes, that thing is mint. Rob L.

Factory Roll Bar Mounting How-To Request
Automan2164 replied to Incommando's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The factory roll bar is attached to the wheel wells with plates on the inside of the wheel well, and bolted down to a factory roll bar tie in to the frame under the bed to support the main hoop. Rob L. -
2WD Pitted Brake Rotor Question
Automan2164 replied to 1987Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When was the last time he had his brakes done? Could it be possible he wore through the rotor to the fins? Rob L.
