Edelbrock 4.0L Cylinder Head?!!
Rockfrog replied to jpnjim's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
From what I saw and have researched the head didn't change other than the above mentioned, but yes the block changed extensively ... Making newer block incompatible with earlier vehicles without a wee bit of work. But we are really only talking about the head, really. The exhaust port changes made in mid 99 should be the only real hurdle as far as just the cylinder head is concerned. -
Two speed windshield wiper with one speed
Rockfrog replied to reubj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a brand new motor, new linkage bushings, and a good intermittent box. There is still no discernable difference between high and low speed on my MJ, just something I had to get used to. Going to try swapping a good 94 motor assembly and a 92 tilt column next (cheaper than replacing the current switch by three times cost). I've heard of swapping to a 97 up motor get you actual speed differences. Could all be corrosion related. Initially I had only slow and slower, after about a month of trying intermittent slowly started working again ( well, that and drilling the rivets out to clean and clear the inside of the module). Now it all function perfectly. ... other than the speed thing. -
Edelbrock 4.0L Cylinder Head?!!
Rockfrog replied to jpnjim's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
AFAIK the only redesign to the head was the upgraded TUPY casting of the original 0331 design (added material between rockers). Otherwise the same head as my 00 XJ. At least it was on my 2006 TJ. And since my XJ runs a 93 head, should be cross compatible. ... although it may mean changing the exhaust to the newer 50 state 2000 cast split manifolds. ... -
If you can find them use the 97 plus checks. They have a rubber bumper built in and a slightly reduced throw. Meaning less chance of pulling the hinges off the body.

And here is the picture verification of the Renix sizes for those that need it. Cost? About $1.92 after taxes Canadian funds and taxation -
painting alum turbine rims
Rockfrog replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I like the painted turbines, just not like that, I've seen a set that had the polished faces left polished and the rough faces blacked out. IMO it really spiced the wheel up. Like this But that video was pure wheel suck. -
'Ratmanche' the '88 Comanche
Rockfrog replied to Rockfrog's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Blew the rear brake feed on the MJ the other day, and the front wheel bearing are shot so ... parked it and started pulling it apart. Think I found the source of the trucks persistent ticking ... rear manifold stud gone ... and #2 intake and #3 exhaust rockers loose and the bridges are bent at an angle and the pivots on those two rockers are excessively worn. In any event heads coming off, being replaced with a 92 head, exhaust manifold and 99+ intake and TB. Then 2000 XJ front clip and a paint job some wiring and a custom cowl hood ... and finally a few months down the road ... back on the road. -
Judging from the rollbar ... 87-91 vintage ... Can we have a moment of silence ...
-
The vent tube is used as a retainer bolt for the rear brake junction block. Pretty standard, if you pull the retainer bolt the hose is attached to you'll see exactly how it works.

Fiat ... new owner of chrysler. And yeah ... my opinion on this is probably just best kept to myself ... not a fan is all I'll say.

Slight Wobble After Lift
Rockfrog replied to Cmbechtold's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Rear pinion is too high ... front pinion is too low ... the rear will cause a vibe itself, the front even more so ... The rear angles should be equal as the info posted above shows. With a 1 to 2 degree down angle. The front pinion should be pointed directly at front output yoke with a 1 degree up angle. Fix those issues and you will kill your wobble. -
I have a spectra in my XJ ... standard stock replacement thing ... works fine. My stock '00 XJ rad now cools the MJ.

Oil filter in an '88: Does the Mopar MO-090 fit?
Rockfrog replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Using a Fram oil filter is like saying you like having the clap. Its just going to suck until you get it sorted out. -
Oil filter in an '88: Does the Mopar MO-090 fit?
Rockfrog replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Wal-mart up here carries Purolator filters ... no Fram at all. I swapped the filter nipple a while back and use the same filter I run on my 2000 XJ now ... I could never find the metric filters anywhere here. And I peeled the M20 stickum off to be safe if the wife takes it in somewhere ... although that's not exactly security against dumb arses. -
Possibly Overheating?

Pull rubber plug out of throttle body ... jam onto end of tubing ... jam back into throttle body. Is the aluminum tubing a rhick wall? -
Possibly Overheating?
Rockfrog replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I replaced most all of my vacuum lines with 3/16" brakeline ... cheap, easily bent as required ... and doesn't melt ... fits the rubber connectors elbows tighter than the stock plastic as well. Older picture ... but it's the green lines for MAP and FPR in this one. -
Learn something new every day ... although I had no issues finding one up here for my 88.

Late Model Fenders ... Early Model Flares?
Rockfrog replied to Rockfrog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Nope not doing the new bumper either ... going with a front receiver I currrently have on the XJ and a more utilitarian bumper. -
And the 3 wire and 4 wire sensors work slightly different. Any 3 wire O2 sensor will have the same plug ... it's common enough, not renix specific. The 4 wire just adds a pre heater circuit ...

Used the same bushings for my 88 that I used on my 00 ... exact same bushings for each. -
Late Model Fenders ... Early Model Flares?
Rockfrog replied to Rockfrog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Have napiers on my XJ ... longer is not a problem ... I plan to keepnthe MJ 2wd amd roll on 31s with a 3.55 8.25 in the rear. Just the 00 update as I prefer that front end. If I end up with the whole XJ ... and don't wind up divorced ... I may swap the interior as well at some point. Thanks for the replies. -
Hi all, 'nother dumb question I haven't been able answer yet ... ... since I have the 2000 XJ front clip going onto the MJ soon ($100 for fenders header assembly and harness was to good to pass) ... I did not get the flares though ... I was figuring to re use the stock 1988 front flares ... will they fit? On another note ... good possibility I may end up with the whole XJ shortly.
