Half tech, half MJ, couple questions on XJ
dasbulliwagen replied to beaterjeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Put a new oxygen sensor in it. I bet that will take care of it. Mine had the same problem, sometimes would be fine, sometimes would sputter. A new sensor fixed it right away. -
Its easier to ask for forgiveness, than it is to ask for permission. Just do it!

If youre going to go with 4-6" of lift, you will either need to do a spring over axle conversion to the rear, or get new springs that have the proper arch to lift that much and be originally spring under axle. But like previous posters said, that would be too much to keep your plow workable. And also as previous posters have said STAY AWAY FROM RUSTYS.... they are nothing but junk and have a horrible reputaion. A milder lift sounds more like what you need, and ZJ, or Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 V8 front springs would be perfect for your situation. Good luck, and let us know how its going... welcome to the club!

The Commander is just a Gr Cherokee with a hummer body on it, all the chassis and underpinnings are Gr Cherokee, so its not like the platform has been discontinued.... at least till next year when the redesigned Grand comes out. The first pics Ive seen of it I'm not impressed with... looks too much like a Pacifica. But I said thee same thing about the 2010 Ram trucks.... Id love to have one of them now that I see them in person.

re centering the steering wheel.
dasbulliwagen replied to possum's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Use whatever will work for you, shouldnt hurt the ends unless they are bad already, and if you break something, then at least youll have an excuse to get a new one!, And you know, the sleeve you need to adjust is the one on the arm connected to the steering box arm. That one will center your steering. -
Chrysler's New Midsize UNIBODY Pickup for 2011????
dasbulliwagen replied to comanche09's topic in The Pub
How many companies have owned Jeep since its inception? Several! And thats not including the comapnies like Ford that built them under contract for WWII. Started out with Willys, Then Rambler, which turned into AMC, then Chysler, then Daimler, then Cerberus, and now Fiat? I'm sure I got part of that wrong or omitted something, but if youre going to be nostalgic for previous owners, how far back do you want to go? It is just another chapter in Jeeps colorful history that will continue to change into the forseeable future. We should just be lucky that the Jeep name is still a sought after brand that is not going to go away like so many others have recently.Whos to say that someone won't be saying 20 years from now about how much better Jeeps were when they were still just with chrysler??? :rotfl2: -
Misc. for My 87 Comanche
dasbulliwagen replied to k.johnson135's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
go to the classifieds section and put up a "want to buy" listing.... I'm sure youll be able to trade your buckets no problem. -
Keeping the 2.5? I remember reading about someone else talking about either a member here or a member of another forum who built a rig like that with the 2.5, low gearing, and doubled.... it is supposedly a badazz rig and great crawler.... maybe someone here will know what I'm talking about. I have the 2.5 in my 87 with 342,000 miles... yeah its gutless, but what do you expect. There are a few performance options for it around, you just have to know where to look. Clifford Performance has headers and intakes for it that can either use a carb setup or their aftermarket injection, Theres a company outside of Vancouver that makes a selection of cams for it, though I can't think of their name at the moment... all my notes are in my toolbox at work. Other things that will help it are doing away with the engine driven fan and installing an electric unit, throttle body spacer, gearing (which you have covered), then the obvious port and polish, cold air intake... etc. We would love to see the build thread if you decide to stay.

Ive been meaning to tell you this since I first saw it. As pretty as your truck is, I think you need to shoot a little paint on those wiper arms!

How about getting an 07 up wrangler donor with the 3.8 V6 and modern manual trans... maybe even a rubicon with axles and all and swap it all over to the MJ. That way you get a V6, better drivetrain for later updates and bigger tires, and you stay Jeep. If you were a chrysler tech you should know the 3.8 is a proven engine. I'm coming up on my 4th year of being a chrysler dealer tech and have yet to see any common problems with this setup. I know its probably too late to convince you to keep coming around here, but this website really is a great resource no matter what you are building, its just that you can't have the attitiude you have and expect everyone to be happy about it. There are plenty of people here with GM drivetrains and they are "just one of the guys", happy to be here and happy to own an MJ. I know you want to be different, but in our opinions, owning an MJ to begin with IS being different no matter what you want for a drivetrain.

Wipers not mission capable
dasbulliwagen replied to socal1200r's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You at the very least need to take the cowl off to see what is happening. It could just be bad bushings and on low when you push them they are able to catch enough to pull back down, but not do this on high, and fall back out when they go back up.... Let us know what you find out. -
Manyof the newer Jeeps (newer being a relative term) call for 80/90 unless it will see regular towing or is equipped with a towing package in which case 75/140 synth is reccomended.

Thanks Pete!

We are just trying to get your reasoning, and I beleive we got it. But you have to expect some rebuttal when you come into an all Jeep group and start knocking all that we hold dear. Yes we know that our Jeeps have SOME weaknesses, but to go off and say its all junk except for the body, and then to say that not even that is really good.... Youre just asking for it. You wanted opinions and you got them, and the ones you don't agree with get you mad..... if youre going to get mad, why bother asking. Seems that you know everything already.
-
I just have to say this after reading through this. If you not such a fan of sooo many things Jeep, then why are you bothering to try to build one up???? Why not just build an S10? That seems to be what you want to build, why go through all the bother, just get an S10 and youll have everything you want already there in one handy already put together package! But thats just my opinion!

The Petty's are an institution in this area and I'm glad to see that they are putting the old race shop to good use. They actually used a bunch of parts from my dealership to build this car and a couple of the guys were able to go see it during its construction. As I'm told, no part of this car was left untouched. Love it!!! Our dealership also services Richard Petty's personal Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8... All black with dark tinted windows all around. PETTY'S GARAGE NOW TURNING OUT CUSTOM MACHINES NASCAR Facility Sending First Car to Barrett-Jackson Auction for Charity Level Cross, N.C. (November 10, 2009) - The change at 311 Branson Mill Road in Level Cross, N.C., a facility that has produced more race winners than any other shop in the history of NASCAR, is amazing. The employees of a newly-formed Petty's Garage are transplanting that legacy of success into a new endeavor producing performance automobiles there. The first car from the historic garage will be a custom 2009 Dodge Challenger to be sold for charity at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in January 2010. "For 61 years, Petty Enterprises built, engineered and raced some of the most-historic cars in all of NASCAR right from this shop," said 'The King' Richard Petty. "You're talking about Plymouth Belvederes, Superbirds, Road Runners, Torino's and Dodge Chargers. When racecars went from being a purely production car to a car built from the ground up, or modified, solely for racing, many of them came out of Level Cross. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish here and it was important for us to keep this place going." Over the years, Petty Enterprises garnered 268 wins in what is now the Sprint Cup Series, ten championships and nine Daytona 500 wins from this facility. Now, Petty's Garage will focus on the manufacturing of performance vehicles, including the "museum-quality" restoration of vintage race vehicles, custom cars and high performance street vehicles. The first complete car project is the build of a Dodge Challenger to be sold at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in January of 2010 by the Petty Family Foundation (PFF). The proceeds of the sale will benefit the PFF and the charities it supports. Established in 1971 and headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Barrett-Jackson specializes in providing products and services to collector car owners, astute collectors and automotive enthusiasts around the world. The company produces "The World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions™" in Scottsdale, Palm Beach, Fla., Las Vegas and Orange County, Calif. Barrett-Jackson also endorses a one-of-a-kind insurance offering for collector vehicles and other valued belongings. "Richard Petty made a huge impact at our Scottsdale event earlier this year when he helped sell another MOPAR for charity," stated Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. "We're pleased that he chose one of our world class automotive lifestyle events to showcase the shop's talents and raise money for such a fantastic charity. It will be truly a historic event where someone will get to own a well-documented car built by the one and only, Richard Petty." The 2009 Dodge Challenger was completely disassembled and placed on a rotisserie so it could be painted the trademark Petty Blue by BASF R ̶ M. Reassembly included a Late Model 426 Hemi by Arrington Engines with 585 hp, Pedders suspension upgrades, Brembo Gran Turismo brakes, a new Corsa Exhaust system with a Petty's Garage custom center exhaust exit and refinished all of the suspension to Petty Parts Blue by BASF R ̶ M. Body Modifications consisted of a Petty's Garage custom front fascia and rear bumper cover, Petty's Garage custom rocker panels, rear spoiler and Petty's Garage branded interior seats and door panels. "This Challenger is special to me because I wanted to build something that I would drive on a daily basis," stated Petty. "I wanted the car to have a race car look, but be functional on the street and I think the guys really captured that. But most importantly it provides our foundation with the platform to help our Veterans, children with life threatening illness and our neighbors in need. Everyone at Petty's Garage is excited about getting this Challenger to Barrett-Jackson in January. I think it will do well when we get there. It definitely shows our capabilities and the auction will put us in front of the right people to show what we can do." http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/11/firs ... t-jackson/

Chrysler's New Midsize UNIBODY Pickup for 2011????
dasbulliwagen replied to comanche09's topic in The Pub
In my younger years I worked the parts counter of a Ford Dealership. An angry mechanic came in to parts one time and said "those idiots who design cars need to work on them for 5 years before the design them!" :fs1: :wall: I AGREE!!!!!! X1000 -
Our SEMA coverage generally doesn't include too much from the off-road segment, but the Jeep Lower Forty concept in the Mopar booth was too good to pass up. Sporting 40-inch Mickey Thompson tires, this Jeep can pretty much go wherever it wants without the help of a suspension lift. Granted, plenty of bodywork was removed to make the new rubber fit, but impressive nonetheless. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 sends grunt to a six-speed manual transmission before hitting all four wheels via a Dana 44 front axle and a Dana 60 rear axle fitted with 5.38 gears. Additional features include a carbon fiber hood, custom bikini top, a chopped windshield, and a color-matched interior with Katzkin leather seating. The Jeep "Lower Forty" takes the Jeep Wrangler platform to a new extreme. The vehicle is equipped with massive 40-inch x 13.5-inch tires mounted on Mopar's 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels. Mopar added aggressive wheels and tires to a stock, two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon without the use of a suspension lift. The team's goal was to achieve added ground clearance without dramatically altering the vehicle's center of gravity. The team removed copious amounts of body metal in order to provide room for 40-inch meats. Three inches are chopped from the windshield frame and a 10-degree rake is added. Custom front and rear fender flares are 1-inch wider and are located 4 inches higher than a stock Jeep Wrangler. A new one-piece carbon-fiber hood with a Jeep CJ-like power dome and an all-new drop-down tailgate stamped with the "Jeep" logo are added to complete the exterior design. On the interior, an all-new roll cage is neatly integrated into the body tub and tied directly into the frame rails. A custom made bikini top from Bestop keeps drivers in the shade. The spare tire is relocated to the cargo floor and a custom cargo rack, supplied by Poly Performance, holds extra gear. Once all body modifications were completed, the exterior received a fresh coat of Red Eye No. 3 paint, a custom color developed by Mopar. Custom touches throughout the interior include a color-matched center console and instrument panel. Seats are re-covered with Mopar's Katzkin leather package in a two-tone scheme. Replacing the carpet is a durable, spray-in truck-bed liner. Rugged Mopar floor mats complete the theme. Mechanical upgrades came directly out of the Mopar catalog. The Jeep "Lower Forty" features an all-new 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine and a Getrag 238 six-speed manual transmission. Powertrain installations were handled by Burnsville Off-Road using an AEV 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 conversion kit. The Mopar-supplied Dana 44 front axle and a Dana 60 rear axle, fitted with 5.38 gears and ARB air lockers, were assembled by Dynatrac and revalved Bilstein shocks maintain vehicle stability on rough terrain. http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/03/jeep ... sema-2009/

steering wheel suggestions
dasbulliwagen replied to akamcbird's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Looks like it would work just fine! -
The Michelins arent as good as they used to be, and if you do get them, they will be dry rotted before they even wear out. In my opinion they arent worth the extra money you will spend to get them. Yokohama, Kumho, Toyo all make good tires at a good price. Go to tirerack.com type in the size you want and it will bring up a list of whats available with performance ratings, and customer reviews, though they don't carry the Toyo's, BFG's are also pretty good. The power comfort button just changes the shift patterns in the trans, Jeep later did away with that and all were programmed to the power setting only. Check to see what rear axle it has, it will either have a Dana 35, or a Dana 44. The 44 will be much better for towing and will have heavier springs better for towing a load. Sounds like a good purchase asuming it isnt rusted too much. How much are they asking for it??? These trucks may be rare, but they are not collectable so don't fall for too high of a price. Some owners think that since they are rare they are worth a pretty penny. That just isnt the case with our trucks. Send us some piccs too. Good luck!

Give us some sugestions... what will work best for you to be motivated to do better and keep your parents off your back at the same time? For some hard headed individuals, threats and intimidation are all that will get the point across. What would work better????

whats the best service manual
dasbulliwagen replied to jmderyke's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Alldata.com has all the factory stuff online for you. You can buy a 1 year, 1 vehicle subscription for like $20 through autozone.com. Gives you all the wiring diagrams, procedures and everything you would get from factory service manuals but in a more user friendly package. I think additional vehicle are only $15 each after the first one. Worked great for me till I got a job at a dealer that had a full subscription. -
