If you look at some of the gaskets for the 4.0 you'll see that they fit all the way back to 1965. It may be developed from the 2.5 but all that was basically a 232 with the center cylinders taken out. Maybe not exactly but close enough.

I don't consider an additional 13 horsepower to be pretty amazing. Hard to say if AMC could have managed the same feat in three additional years or not. They did develop the motor itself in just over two years. From a 1965 model year design. So it was first put down on paper in 60-61? They sure had plenty of time to develop it but it remained basically the same from then until 1986.

I'm seeing if there is any interest in Jeep 2.5 performance parts. Guy I know has some Mopar stage 3 2.5 parts. I know he has at least valve train parts such as cam and timing set. He may have a head, I don't know for sure. He is going to send a list and part numbers to me. I'll post them up when I receive them.

What to do if your hood release cable breaks
FrankTheDog replied to Pete M's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Ex son in law traded a kindle for a 98 XJ. It's rust free and mostly straight except where the PO hammered down the fenders and pried open the hood when the hood release handle broke. So now he's looking for clean fenders and a hood for it. -
Go with the gold, it's probably cheaper because they bought it cheaper. You can't go wrong with either though.

Luk gold clutch, I put 200,000 on one in a Cherokee then sold it. 20,000 later it's still going good. They come with the internal slave. The centerforce I took out had only 100k on it. YMMV

I paid $400 for four nice doors attached to a nice running XJ.

Does This Look Right?!?!?
FrankTheDog replied to 87MJTIM's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
As to why you can't find 4.10's. Only approx 20% of XJ's were 4 cylinders. That's why it's hard to find 4.10's. I'm guessing that with manual 4.0's it would be close to 30% of XJ's had them. -
Transmission is good for somebody who is swapping out a BA10 but wanting to stay 2wd. It's a bolt up for 87-91 4.0's. 92 and up has a different sized pilot shaft.

I've seen those graphics on Wranglers but did they ever come on Comanches? I don't think there was an Islander edition. Pretty cool.

gear ratio questions
FrankTheDog replied to dustyinthedirt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you're going to stick with 31's get 4.10's. They work great with 31-32" tires. -
rear wheel bearing question
FrankTheDog replied to teamsmith's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you just jack up the side you're changing, very little will run out. -
Saw a commercial for this tonight and it looked like a patrol or land cruiser pickup.

Bending Dana 30 back to correct position
FrankTheDog replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know a guy that has run several axles with the same set of 4.10 gears. He just keeps all the shims and bearings together that were on the set originally and installs it in another axle. This works ok for the front because it's not used all the time like the rear is. -
94 XJ Buckets/MJ Brackets ?
FrankTheDog replied to PEEJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
95 was the change over year to the new style brackets with the floor and side reinforcements. Same year they put the drivers side airbag in. I have 92 and 94 XJ's, the seats and brackets are identical. I think I've had every year of the XJ except 84,85 and 01. -
I've run castrol 10w/30 in my 2.5's and 4.0's for years. Stick with it. You can also use 10w/30 in your transmission too. Transfer case gets dexron atf. Like was said eBay or quadratec for your lenses for new.

2.5 " exhaust upgrade worth it?
FrankTheDog replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's why it's not worth going to a larger exhaust unless you are going to play with all that. Like in Don's case, stroker with other mods. -
Kinda looks like it. Pretty strong elephant to toss 2 tons like that. Scratch that, MJ's don't have a leaf sprung passenger drop front axle. So if it's a jeep it has to be a J series.
