  1. You're picking up a whole axle and not just gears, yes?
  2. leafs will be compatible. metric ton is a separate package and was available in any year. can't know for sure if that one had it without looking. if the 86 was an MT, it'll have the AMC-20 and that has a basketball shaped differential. the cover is perfectly round. Since your truck is a 4.0/5spd, your gears will be 3.07s and that means anything that's in that 86 will be better.
  3. The Rodeo 44 has a regular 44 differential. anything that fits in an MJ 44 should go in the Rodeo version. I'd probably go with a semi-built d30 up front and then get converter spacers for the rear. That would push the rear tires out a bit so they look normal, but won't pull in the front pivot points more than they are already. Then I could run some TJ 15x8 canyons and live happily ever after. :D
  4. JB, do you have a project thread yet?
  5. checked under the carpet yet?
  6. I don't like buying parts that I can't fully inspect ahead of time. also, I'd shoot for a 96-99 XJ front axle with 3.55s. they are everywhere and have the bigger joints, non-CAD, and are younger. as for the 44, that's up to you. plenty of 97+ 3.54 8.25s out there too.
  7. let me start by saying that what you'll be doing may or may not be pretty stupid. but now that the disclaimer is out of the way :D , the last ditch rescue points will be your axles. Do NOT yank on them. slow steady pulling only. And if you're really really stuck, ya gotta dig out the dirt in front of your tires first. and I suggest bring along some 1"x10"x3foot boards. they can come in handy for making ramps to make it easier to get your tires to roll up out of whatever trench you've dug with your front tires.
  8. what kind of wheeling are you doing in 2wd?
  9. the engine and fuel management system were designed around a certain amount of back-pressure. gotta be careful that you don't eliminate all of the back-pressure or you'll lose torque like Eagle mentioned. If you want a sound change, I'd suggest leaving everything up to the cat alone, and then throwing a cherry bomb or whatever after the cat. keeping the front half should retain enough back-pressure. Check what gears you have in the axle. best way for an instant kick in the seat of your pants is deeper gears. :D after that, probably a swap to an electric cooling fan.
  10. a-yup. coulda killed someone.
  11. it's totally worth the money. Buy a pair for the front and put the hooks there. Then figure out something for the rear. Many guys use a class 3 hitch.
  12. yes, you can run an inline fuel pump. be aware that you're building up a truck that will outpace the power available from your engine. what are you doing for gears?
  13. you must buy or make brackets. the shetmetal that makes up our frames is not strong enough on its own to just bolt a hook on.
  14. what brand radio?
  15. don't forget that a lift is only part of the equation. axle strength and gearing are also important. 4.5" could be enough with some longer bumpstops, the right wheels, or some fender trimming.
  16. I wouldn't bother with the Peugeots. sell them for scrap and put that towards an AX-15. The Peugeot is notoriously hard to work on with no guarantee of success afterward.
  17. the factory didn't measure them that way: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11693
  18. almost. those aren't the right addresses. keep trying. you'll get it. don't forget to highlight the address, then click the IMG tag so it shows up as an image rather than a link.
  19. the spambots are chasing you? It was has been so nice for the last few months. one of the few plusses that came out of that ill-fated software update was a new and improved sign-in puzzle. but it would appear that they forces of evil have overcome it and now it's back to the same ol' same ol'. :fs1: until we get a new antispammer program again. :D the war rages on...
  20. axle center lines?
  21. the 242 will work great, and 96 should even have the sealed rear output.
  22. there are really only 3 different heights for MJs. 2wd, 4wd (1 inch taller), and the metric ton models seem to be a hair taller than their regular MJ counterparts due to the stiffer springs. but there were multiple spring part numbers used with minor differences (i.e 2.5L coils didn't have to hold up as much weight as 4.0L coils).
  23. I'm sure it's been done. gotta dump the gas tank so you can fit in a 4link. gotta design a 4link so it works properly and doesn't tear itself out of the uniframe. you could then hack off the back of the bed for 90* departure angle. and I'm sure you could get more flex. but my leafs work so dang well, I have a hard time seeing how much more benefit I'd get. :dunno: but then, I guess I don't tackle rocks at all.
  24. so clean...
  25. nah, it's a big chunk o' cast iron. there's really nothing fancy or hi tech about a 360. :D I wanna say a 4.0 weighs in at around 350 and the 5.9 at 550 lbs. could be wrong though.
