might be as simple as needing the linkage adjusted. while he's under there, look for shot or missing plastic bushings in the linkage and any rust around the handle area (less of an issue with a jeep that new).
ever picked up a 2wd MJ driveshaft? the ones with the rubber isolator? :D thems heavier than they look.
but regardless, I was thinking more along the lines of damaging the u-joint if it fell to the pavement.
the U-joint is likely just frozen in with rust. you can try kicking it, or prying with a prybar, but be prepared that it can quickly come crashing down when it frees up.
I meant the thick u-bolt plates that are separate from the thin shock mount plates. They are separate in all my MJs, and I keep forgetting that I found them integrated together on that 92 MJ. I guess I'm assuming an XJ would have the thicker structural plates.
doesn't matter much, but typically the hose from the filterbox to the valve cover (the fresh air coming in) is larger than the hose running from the valve cover to the intake manifold (which sucks the bad fumes out and puts them into the engine to burn)
But in the end, it'll be ok to have them the same size if that's easier to do.
I wallowed out my shock mount holes when I installed the 9" axle. I think (it's been a while) I used the 4" grinder. Doesn't have to be pretty. :D
But I built my U-bolt plates from scratch. I assume you didn't grab those from the XJ?
I'm not all that familiar with the wranglers, but on my 4.0s, both are rubber plugs with holes in the middle. Got replacements at the parts store in the "help" section. think they were listed as Ford parts.
and the middle one is of course the oil cap.
If I understand it right, one goes to the vacuum port on the intake manifold and the other goes to the filter box. One is in, the other out, and I imagine it doesn't really matter which is which. :dunno:
