  1. Also, check out some of the previous auctions won by the 503k bidder. :clapping:
  2. Just saw this on another forum. This auction was won by collectordan for $304. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0132264843 Who promptly relisted it with the proper spelling of Allsopp and it sold for $503,300 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0145824374 I wonder if anyone has emailed the original seller yet. :D It has yet to be seen that he gets every penny of that last bid, but even then, the second, third and forth in line bid almost that much.
  3. Out of curiosity, did you get the new control module from the junkyard?
  4. If he thought 8 hours was boring, I don't imagine he'll survive the road trip from NY to Cali. :D And for the record 8 hours is nothing. My house is 24 hours of driving from Moab (probably turned out to be more than that since my truck couldn't always do the speedlimit) and it was just me and the dog with no radio (couldn't hear it over the road noise). Disney Word is 19 hours away. My sister lives 12 hours away. And if I remember right, The Badlands is about 10 and Rockport offroad park is 11 and change. But as much as I love the open road, I do wish I lived closer to some good wheeling. :( sigh...
  5. I love following the short Jeeps. :D I may not do the turns as smoothly, but I'll be danged if I won't follow wherever they lead. Although with that minispool up front the tight turns can be a bee-atch (multi-point turns are, um, "not unheard of"). And now I have the boggers sticking out in the rear, catching tree trucks as I go... And that one time I just pushed over the dead tree rather than try to go around it... :D The tighter the trail, the bigger the challenge. But I generally don't wheel at night. I bet that would make it exponentially harder.
  6. Underneath the dash on the drivers side is a small plastic box that has wires going in one end and wires coming out the other. It is usually attached to the Jeep with velcro. This is the wiper control module. Replacing it exorcized (sp?) the demons in the psychotic wipers of my 90.
  7. You knew this was coming: :D :needpics:
  8. Nice truck. :D If you ever get the project itch again, there's always the 4wd conversion. :brows:
  9. Got a magnet to leave? :brows:
  10. There was a 45mph sticker on the last open top U-haul trailer I wanted to rent. :( I ended up just borrowing my buddies trailer instead. It was a 12 hour drive to my destination at 70 mph, I sure as heck wasn't going to attempt that at only 45. (and after inspecting the U-haul trailer, I wasn't about to go any faster than 45 with it)
  11. I don't know of anyone that's actually done it. It's always been the theory that you could convert an AX-4 to have the overdrive, but it was always also assumed that it'd be easier or cheaper to just go buy an AX-5. :dunno:
  12. Are you sure about that? Maybe it was a typo. The 27 spline 8.25 is only marginally stronger than a Dana 35. The 31 spline 8.8 is waaay stronger than a Dana 35 and the shafts are stronger than a Dana 44. Even the 28 spline 8.8 is much stronger than a Dana 35. As to C-clips, it's a common thing to say it's poor, but that's not due to weakness in the C-clip itself, but rather it's a weakness of the design. When you bust an axle shaft, the clip part gets retained inside the diff just fine, but the rest of the axle shaft is allowed to wander right out of your axle tube and it takes the tire with it. With a non-C-clip design, the tire and outer part of the axle shaft are retained even if the axle shaft snaps. But if you get a 31 spline Explorer 8.8, the C-clip design is essentially a moot point seeing as it's very VERY hard to snap one of those shafts. :D
  13. The highway patrol tends to frown upon that method of towing. :D
  14. Nothing special came with the Metric tonne package. But if you want an upgrade in strength over your Peugeot ranny, the AX-15 fits the bill. Or even stronger is the NV-3550 that came in the Jeeps 2000 and newer. The Exporer 8.8 is a very nice and very strong axle. It has the same 5 on 4.5" wheel bolt pattern and it just a hair more narrow than a Dana 35. 95-00 Explorers also came with rear disk brakes. C-clips are one way to hold an axle shaft into the axle housing. Both bolt to 4.0L.
  15. Yeah, yeah. But nothing's going to happen til I get that piece of paper from Wayne State. :(
  16. I have thought about that, but don't have the resources to follow through with my ideas. :(
  17. KJ. Apparently I type faster than I think and I should probably start using names instead of letters. And you apparently haven't driven a diesel Libby. :D But I concede that the engine is probably the only cool thing about it (well, that and the satellite radio). The Durango was definitely better than the Libby, but the MJ still tried its darndest to wiggly the Durango back and forth when there were grooves in the highway. The next time I take the MJ long distance, I'll be searching out a tow dolly with brakes and we'll see how that goes behind the Libby. I would foot the extra money for the Hemi though. The Libby takes off faster than the 4.7 Durango when the MJ is in tow.
  18. It's never a good idea to remove leafs from an MJ. The spring-wrap would become unbearable. It's better to use a lowering block.
  19. Flat towing isn't any safer. What you gain in less weight, you lose in the lack of extra brakes. I've flat towed my MJ with a KJ and there's no doubt I was maxing out the KJ's braking system. (plus the long weheelbase of the MJ pushes the KJ around and can make for an eye-opening experience even on a flat straight road)
  20. I blew up my Dana 35 with 30" tires. :D Get a 95-01 Explorer 8.8, some 297 shafts for the Dana 30, and those milder 33s and you should be ok.
  21. This is one of those rare occasions where I think a Dana 35 will do just fine. He's got tiny tires and it's his daily driver. The XJ Dana 35 will go right in (after welding on the perches), no muss, no fuss. He should even be able to even transfer over the brakes from his current axle if they are new. The 8.8 requires a bunch of extra stuff to accommodate the pinion flange, the larger tubes, the brakes etc. It's a project unto itself. I know it sounds really really weird to hear me say it, but I think he should get a cheap Dana 35. And it better be cheap. No more than a hundred bucks. If the junkyard wants more, keep looking. And if I haven't mentioned it yet, try car-part.com for junkyard searches.
  22. And that only comes into play if you can find a way to break the gi-normous axle shafts. :D
  23. The Olympic Edition package was nothing more than a couple stickers. :( My 88 is one.
  24. If it sits for long periods of time, try simply disconnecting the battery.
  25. Oh, and while I was at it, I'd go for the 95 XJ dual-diaphragm brake booster upgrade too.
