Hey now, my 97 Chrysler town-n-country just rolled over 210k and is one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever seen let alone owned. Not everything on it is perfect mind you, but not too shabby for a vehicle that has seen 12 Michigan winters. We've been the sole owners though, and I like to think I've had a hand in its longevity. :D Having said all that, when the time comes to replace it, I want a 7.3 Excursion. :D The ol' van can't tow my MJ around. :(

It's been sidelined due to Qui-Gon's life becoming a bit, um, "complicated". But I haven't forgotten. :thumbsup:

Are you sure it wasn't the old stub shaft that took out the U-joint? Sounds to me like a great excuse to hunt down some 297 shafts. :D

The purpose of a t-stat is to keep the coolant in the engine to help it heat up faster. The lower temp T-stats merely open sooner than the higher temp ones. Once that temperature is reached, it opens all the way up and functions the same as the higher temp ones. If the t-stat temp is way too low, the engine will take forever to heat up to operating spec (if it ever does). It is not a cure for anything since an overheating engine will still overheat.

Bummer. But to answer your question, the early 8.25 is slightly better than the Dana 35. Not really enough to justify a swap (unless you get a better gear ratio out of it). The 97+ 8.25 is a much better axle (comparable to the Dana 44), having thicker axle shafts with a higher spline count. The later model shafts and spider gears can be swapped into the earlier 8.25s.

The Dana 35 is an oval blob. The Dana 44's diff cover is stop-sign shaped (sorta). The 8.25 (lower picture) has a flat bottom to the differential housing.

But they are very specialized pieces of steel that are under intense and complex forces during wheeling and driving. Also, in Michigan at least, it's illegal to fab up your own suspension parts. There's more than one reason why I don't tool around town in my 88. :D

There are more than one kind of failure for a cat, like: slipping performance, clogging from upstream junk, and internal collapsing. When you smack it does it sound like there's anything loose inside?

If it's not too much effort, could you check all of the ones you pull? There are likely some differences over the years.

x2 on the bad cat. I assume you still have sniffer tests in your area? Might be a good idea to just replace the 20 year old cat anyway. Can you watch your fuel injector while someone revs the engine? Maybe it's clogged and just dribbling out gas.

So far so good. :thumbsup: After seeing that fuse, you should probably check and double check that the fuse box doesn't have any evidence of brake fluid contamination from the clutch master cylinder. :(
