  1. oooooo, an audi.... :brows:
  2. That's the Jeeper spirit. :D
  3. Make sure you've got lock-tite on the bolts that need them, and anti-seize on the rest.
  4. A 2wd trans will not bolt to a t-case directly. And the 87 trans is a Peugeot and so the guts won't swap either. It's possible that the 4wd trans is an easy fix.
  5. Isn't there a couple of smallish bolts up near the top of the cover? Been a while since I've had to deal with it, but I seem to remember being very frustrated and then finding them hidden in the grime.
  6. Excellent point, except that WD-40 isn't very good at rust break up. A better choice would be a rust penetrant like PB-Blaster.
  7. they started putting in the 4.0 in the 86 calender year, but they were categorized as the 87 model year. Have you tried kicking the stick? worked the time my peugeot was stuck in gear. :D
  8. What part of the trans is bad? As transmissions go, the AX-15 isn't all that hard to pull apart for new bearings/bushings. Oh, and if the donor truck has a 4.0 engine, it's likely not an 86. 87 was the first year for the 4.0
  9. You can also get the ratio by jacking up one rear tire, putting the trans in neutral, and rotating the tire around twice while counting the number of times the driveshaft rotates. If the driveshaft rotates 3.5 times, you've got a 3.55 ratio. (for those who have positraction, you'll need to jack up both rear tires and rotate them around only once.)
  10. Those are just rules of thumb. ya gotta check to really know for sure.
  11. 99% of MJs came with Command Trac (NP-231 or NP-207 t-case) and that is the determining factor in getting a CAD front axle in an MJ. The handful of 86 MJs that got the Selec-trac t-case would have come with a non-CAD front axle.
  12. doesn't the guy that makes the bedside patch panels also carry floorpans?
  13. CAD fix: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18415 AX-15 on the left, BA-10 on the right. note the line of bolts that split the BA-10 into a left and right half.
  14. 4.0 + auto = 3.55 gears 4.0 + stick = 3.07 gears 2.5L + 4spd stick = 3.55 gears (usually) 2.5L + 5spd stick = 4.10 gears (usually)
  15. I gotta run out the door, but my quick thoughts: t-case drop kit isn't needed on MJs. Sway bar extended links are better than drop brackets (especially if your truck is rusty underneath since the bolts like to snap right off. AALs and extended shackles aren't exactly the best way to lift the rear. longer flexy brake lines are superior to bending the old hard lines.
  16. time-outs will never be announced.

    D30 vs. D35

Rear axles suffer from wear and tear all the time when driving, front axles only when in 4wd. When offroad, weight transfer during acceleration or when driving uphill shifts a good deal of the stress to the rear axle. Throughout history, trucks have typically had heavier duty rear axles than front.
  18. 98/99. must be 4wd with the Saginaw type box. It has a bigger diameter piston. http://www.universityofjeep.ca/Tech/Dur ... rsion.html
  19. 86 is pretty much a "look and see" model year. the 87+ rules of thumb don't seem to apply anymore. :(
  20. when it comes to the 2.5L, the 86 and 87 model years are pretty much identical to 88-90. 91 and 92 got the better MPI fuel delivery.
  21. 99 Durango steering box and a new ps pump are an option too.
  22. The original front u-joints on my '88 XJ lasted approximately 275,000 miles, and that includes wheeling at Paragon in PA, the Mohawk Trail region of MA, a secret trail (now closed) in RI, and some puttering around on fire roads and such in New Mexico. Greasable?
  23. If your current clutch master is in good shape, you can adapt the clutch line to the new slave's clutch line. I've done it twice now. And on my 90 I had about that much slave line left as I see in your photo. I just cut it so it was straight and finagled the old line to match up, then used a 1/4" to 5/16" compression fitting I got from the hardware store. This photo is of my 88 (which had lots more of the plastic line left)
  24. the Explorer 8.8 is 5/8" narrower on each side
  25. There's a huge difference between the TJ/YJ shifter and the XJ/MJ shifter. You'll want the MJ/XJ variety.
