technically my dad bought them. :D but mostly I found that decent used winter tires near me were almost as expensive as the ones I bought. :dunno: my particular size was the cheapest though. also, I have purchased new tires before (2 sets of bfgs). I just swore I'd never do it again. :yes: but when a deals a deal, I can't pass it up.

in their defense, he did say he'd mount whatever I brought in as long as I rolled them in separate. that was a bit more hassle than I wanted to deal with on this occasion.

play in the steering could be anything in the front end including the track bar. have someone saw the steering wheel back and forth while you inspect the frontend for where the movement is. :thumbsup:

I know. :thumbsup: but I couldn't go much higher without contacting the coil cups (stupid ifs). plus the new 215 tires were the cheapest size. :D WalMart refused to mount them because they were "too tall" and might get sliced by the fenders. phooey on that. :fs2: The tires would touch the cups long before touching any part of the fender. There's generally only me in the van (and carly of course) so I have a different set of requirements. The cushy ride is kinda nice. :D but I agree there isn't much sidewall strength in a 1 ply tire. :ack:

... but the Jeeper in me can't leave well enough alone, even when it comes to my van. I was in desperate need of tires and just couldn't stand the thought of a simple replacement and so wondered, "how big of a tire can I shove under that thing?" :D So I did some research, took some measurements, and went from balding 225/60 tires to a 215/70 brand new winter tires up front and lots-o-tread used tires in the back. And none too soon either, as one of my rear tires developed a nasty rot in the sidewall which made for an interesting drive to the tire place today (yay co2 tank!). I'm sitting an inch or more taller than I was this morning. shipping tires is actually very reasonable. the new ones came from Tire Rack and were 66 each plus like 25 shipping, the used ones came from ebay (vyc tires to be exact) and were like 70 shipped to my door. yes I could have shoved a bit more rubber under there (still have a little more room before the front tires would have contacted the coil buckets), but was worried about hurting the van's performance (she's old and I don't want to stress her out too much) and could only afford to do this once.

about 5" came in the first storm. hasn't been above freezing since it fell days and days ago. hold on, I'll check if it's still there....... yup. still there. and weather.com says it's staying put for at least the next 10 days.

Are you sure that's an original MJ main leaf? Maybe it's just the photo angle, but the forward bushing should be larger. What's its diameter? MJ leafs on the left and center. Explorer on the right.

got a shot of the shackles? what's up with your load sensor arm? looks like it's at a weird angle.

I was hoping more for a shot of the leaf springs and the yoke angle of the axle.

I don't get what all the fuss is about. It's a big go-cart that you can legally take on the freeway. Sounds dangerous enough to be exiting. :D screw sky diving, lets go get smart cars! :rotf:

I've been looking for a phrase that adequately described setting up gears... :D Another way to check (if possible since brakes sometime lock up in the junkyard) is to spin one of the axleshafts and count the number of times the yoke spins. If only one axle shaft turns, rotate it around twice. If both axle shafts turn in the same direction and at the same rate, turn the axle shaft once. If they spin in opposite directions, you're going to need to get one to stay still while you turn the other twice.

you don't have to do one to do the other. I just happened to do it all while I had the chance. :D and I didn't care if the valve worked or not. I wanted it and the rusty brake lines gone. fewer things to fail. try asking in the classifieds for the 44 bracket. :thumbsup:

I ditched the sensor. course I also completely redid the brake system at the same time, dual booster and all.

If I had money I would. Supposedly he's coming up here right after Christmas so we'll see. :D

do NOT pay to regear a Dana 35. They are NOT worth the investment. grab a 35/44/8.8/8.25 from the junkyard with the better gears already installed. :thumbsup: What size tires are you running?

We had a member not too long ago who found out one of the potential effects of using an XJ axle unmodified. One leaf was straight up and down like normal and the other had taken on all of the offset. The bushings on that side had completely obliterated themselves. Don't do it. perches are under $20 and welding can be had for a 6-pack. There's no excuse for doing it wrong.

could be other things too. but it's easy enough to check the U-joints. crawl underneath and shake the driveshaft. :thumbsup:

well, technically they might be illegal being they are unapproved lights in an unapproved location, but I can't see a cop pulling him over during the holidays. :D but running them on a mid-summer's night might pique some interest. :rotfl2:
