While all y’all were getting’ yer panties in a bunch here :shake: , some of us were wrenching over the weekend (and drinking copious amounts of beer) ;) Finally got started Saturday around 10 AM: Image Not Found The blowed-up 4.0 :ack: : Image Not Found Got the front clip off and got goin’: Image Not Found Dead soldier, out: Image Not Found New soldier, going in later that afternoon: Image Not Found Got it bolted in and called it a day: Image Not Found Went back down this morning and realized the water pump had to be swapped, did that, bolted everything else up and fired it up. It ran, surprisingly…. Image Not Found Had a tranny cooler line leak and a fuel line leak (at the tank), fixed both, and drove it home: Image Not Found Couple things I learned about the differences between a XJ/MJ and a YJ/TJ 4.0. The passenger motor mount brackets are the same but the driverside one is different (found that out the hard way), and the water pump snouts are different as well as the alternator/AC compressor brackets. Like Pat said too, the flexplate differs from a 93 to a 95 as well. All in all, a pretty fun swap and a good way to spend a weekend  Jeff

urethane ax15 mounts?????HELP
mjeff87 replied to jeepaholic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yep, stock AX15 crossmember. Dimensionally it's the same as the AX4/5, AW4, BA10/5 one, but the center is notched where the mount bolts in by 1". Found that out the hard way when I swapped the AX15 in when I did the motor transplant and tried to reuse my AX5 one  Jeff -
swap plans got waylayed by a visit from the inlaws last week :ack: Got the YJ and the "new" motor down to the garage, ready to go at 0600 tomorrow. Today's the wife's birthday and she already threatened divorce if I try to start on it tonight...... If anyone's around and wants to come turn a wrench or drink breakfast, c'mon down. Same place that I did my engine swap at. Gonna try to knock it all out tomorrow so I can take my wife out Sunday for dinner (and miss the nascar race). Jeff

I’m using a stock XJ towbar bracket that I found in the junkyard a couple years ago. It bolts inbetween the tow hooks and hook brackets. I’ve never seen another one since the one I found, but it wouldn’t be too hard to fab up something similar: Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found

can't pull the lifters on a 4.0 without removing the head, unlike the 2.5 (just for future search purposes) In my beer-fessional opinion :D loss of power under load coupled with backfiring out of the intake points strongly toward bad ignition. Didja pop the dizzy cap and check underneath? I do agree with the others on the fuel pressure issue, though.....get that straight to eliminate any problems that might be causing, then you can baseline it and troubleshoot from there (but I'm still going for an ignition problem of some sort) Jeff

86 Comanche Transfer Case Help
mjeff87 replied to Fastcast's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the saucer thingy is a vaccuum motor that is attached to the mode switch in the cab (the one pictured above). When you flip the switch, you send a vac signal to the motor, which is connected to the mode fork in the case via a rod, and switches the case to 4WD (or back to 2WD, depending). The shift lever in the cab is also connected to the case, to the range selector on the side. You switch between high, neutral, and low range with it. Difference between the 228 and 229 is that the 228 has an open differential operation and the 229 uses a (very expensive to replace) viscous coupling, just like the 249 cases in some Grand Cherokees. Most likely the VC in his case is shot. -

fuel gage reading backwards
mjeff87 replied to comaaron's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I did the opposite....put an HO fuel pump assembly into my Renix. I knew going in about the gauge reversal, and looked at the new unit long and hard to try to figger out how to "fix" it before install. The sending unit only has one wire (+) coming out of it, it grounds thrru the assembly, so there's no possiblilty of swapping wires at that end. I then looked at the printed circuit on the back of the cluster, and all the gauges share a common ground as near as I could figure, so I just left it all as is and installed it. Like others have said, you just have to get used to it reading the wrong way :chillin: Jeff -
If the set is only 25K old, I probably wouldn't fuss with it. At the most, I'd pop the cover and inspect the tensioner to see how far it has self-adjusted itself, if any. If more than 1/3 I'd probably put a new one on. My OEM set lasted to about 160K or so, and even then it was just the tensioner that was shot (but I replaced everything since I had it all torn down at that point). Jeff

mvusee, not sure on your parts availability up there on OH (if it's anything like southwest PA I know it flat out sucks.....) but if you find yourself down here in VA you can pull 8.8's out of a couple 'yards here all day long for $100 and some change. There's usually no shortage of them in either, too. I was gonna go the 8.8 route on mine but happened my way into an MJ D44 with some creative parts swapping :D Jeff
