Renix intake manifold heat shield
HOrnbrod replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They did, especially with the later intake manifold. The below was one of the cures. It first came out as a TSB "debris" shield, but it worked well as a heat shield too. There were also a couple of other TSB's regarding injector heat soak and individual injector wrapping but I found no need to do them after using the below. -
Thanks - good info. I'll be using an LED bulb then. EDIT: Got the ashtray lamp in this morning and did leave the lens off. It's still not very bright, but better than nothing. I didn't have an LED that fit and didn't feel like going out to buy one, so I just used the incandescent bulb. And as usual, lost two screws as I always do when removing the lower dash panel. :fs1:

1991 XJ Steering Column into 1990 MJ
HOrnbrod replied to mrmel2you's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Do you have cruise and/or intermittent wipers on your old column? Depending on how the new XJ column is configured you may have to swap in the multifunction switch and stalk from the old column for these features to work on the new column. -

New tank, New Fuel Pump...won't start
HOrnbrod replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Wire up a battery charger to the pump for power and hook a temp hose on the pump discharge port to empty into a bucket. Then lower the pump into your fuel bucket with a rope, power it up and see if it pumps into the other bucket. There's even a flow volume test writeup in the FSM where a healthy pump should pump at least one liter of fuel per minute. It's normally done on the vehicle but since you said there's no fuel coming out of the fuel rail.......... -
New tank, New Fuel Pump...won't start
HOrnbrod replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Bummer. If you had the fuel pump running with the fuel rail Schrader valve stem out and no fuel comes out, it's either an obstruction in the supply line or the pump is bad. Try a set of gauges but I doubt you will read anything. Next step would be to remove the sender/pump and check the supply line for obstructions. If everything looks okay carefully try a bucket test. You can use diesel or even kerosene for a short test. I had a bad Bosch pump right out of the box once that wouldn't pump. What were your original symptoms that caused you to replace the pump? -
New tank, New Fuel Pump...won't start
HOrnbrod replied to Virginia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes the pump will run in reverse (backwards) if polarity is reversed. When you turn the ignition key ON (not to START) does the pump run for a few seconds then shut off? If it keeps running it's not building up pressure indicating it's probably wired up backwards. -

Next time do one side at a time with the wheels on the ground. I found that way to be a lot easier. -

Direct Mount Coolant Temperature Gauge
HOrnbrod replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Back in the olden days before ECUs when multiple carbs with progressive linkage, solid lifters, and dual point mechanical distributors ruled, a lot of time was spent under the hood while the engine was running setting all this stuff up to play well together. These included among others setting and synchronizing the carbs, adjusting the lifters, setting the dwell, checking the timing, etc., then repeating everything again until it was right. With a direct mount temp gauge you could eyeball it while under the hood and was a convenient way to monitor the engine temps while doing these procedures so the engine didn't overheat. With engine computers, hydraulic lifters, and MPFI, you don't really need an underhood temp gauge anymore, but I like retro stuff in my MJ. -
Direct Mount Coolant Temperature Gauge
HOrnbrod replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What, you couldn't find a chrome version of this? LOL If you're trying to be a comedian you better stick to your day job. I'll bet you youngsters probably don't even know why a direct mount temp gauge was used a lot back in the day................ -
"good shape" were the key words.

Are you saying you have the harness connector and your 91 does have a working ashtray light? Yes, I added the ashtray light to my MJ, connector was there and powered. My 91 XJ had it from the factory, or at least when I got it. Okay - thanks.

Direct Mount Coolant Temperature Gauge
HOrnbrod replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This is where I got my stuff: Parker 222P-6-M122 Adapter - Amazon http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BYLXFTG/ref=biss_dp_t_asn Temperature Gauge - Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Thermometer-/170452535226?hash=item27afc347ba:m:mWZPyo1Xb4KgGOCPfzQeQ8w&vxp=mtr 3/8-18 NPT Street Elbow, Coupling, and 2" or 3" Nipple at your local hardware store -
Always wanted to install an old-school direct mount engine coolant temperature gauge to go along with the fuel rail pressure gauge I already have in the engine compartment. I was going to get a pipe adapter and splice into the upper radiator hose, but my radiator had an unused metric bung for the Renix-type coolant temperature sensor, so I decided to use that. I had all the pipe thread fittings (3/8" NPT nipple, street elbow, and coupler) to mount it, and just needed to buy the correct metric-to-NPT adapter to plumb it in. I found the M22x1.5 to 3/8 NPT adapter online for ~$5 from Amazon and the gauge itself cost around $20. The pics were taken looking down the back of the radiator drivers side. It works great.

Anyone have one available in good shape?
-
Thanks Mike but I just snagged one on Ebay. I keep a container of change in there and a lamp would be nice to have at night at the drive through. I've had quite a few XJs and don't remember any of them having it. Mike - got a PM from G who said there was no power on the harness connector on both his 92 MJ and 95 XJ, yet his 89MJ and 87 XJ did have power. So maybe this ashtray lamp feature was a Renix era thing only. I'll dig through my FSM wiring diagrams and see what I can find.......... Anyone have a 91 or later MJ/XJ that has a working ashtray lamp?
-
No, but those would sure be nice with the new Mopar CD player I just put in.
-
:rotfl2: Ya, I like oak. So the whole lower dash knee panel has to come out Mike? Figured as much. I had something else I needed to do in that area but I've forgotten what it was. :hmm:
