AW4 fixed...but not now.
HOrnbrod replied to ParadiseMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
^^ There you go. Mine looked similar, but they weren't Dorman. Don't know if the size is the same either. The AW4 has a 3/8" hole that the vent (or hose adapter if mounting remotely) presses into. -

...and hornbrod, I replied to your old post in classified about the adapters, vthen I realized it was in Classifieds Doh! I do have some of those vent valves with the hat. Do you need one? Image Not Found My 2WD AW4 didn't have a hose - the valve simply plugged into tranny. The 4WD version is attached to a hose. -
Especially at VA facilities. I'm a vet, but damned if I'll ever set foot in one nowadays. Hope you'll be okay Eagle. Then you've heard the VA joke before?"The VA, giving vets a second chance to die for their country." Yes I have, sad but true. But to be fair to the VA, one of the most popular federal budget cuts by the current and recent crop of leadership has been to hack and slash their budget. No longer can they attract the top medical personnel and administrators. Thus their caseload is now overwhelming and way back loaded due to incompetent leadership and understaffing. And I don't see any relief on the horizon for our vets. It sucks. Sorry for the rant - no need for comments - I'm off topic...

Newbie with engine swap question
HOrnbrod replied to chelvis's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That would a nice swap. Just the weight savings alone over the 4.0 is almost 200 lbs (318 lbs vs. 515 lbs). -
Excerpt from the 86 factory parts manual: Gas, Carbureted 83502635, 1, 23.5 Gallon 83502635, 1, 16 Gallon, Also Use 1 of 53002492 Sending Unit Gas Injected 83502632, 1, 23.5 Gallon 83502632, 1, 16 Gallon, Also Use 1 of 83502729 Sending Unit Diesel 83502635, 1, 23.5 Gallon 83502635, 1, 16 Gallon, Also Use 1 of 52003644 Sending Unit Notice the 23.5 gal and 16 gal tanks use the same part number and are the same physical dimensions? So it must be an internal baffling thing because the tanks require different senders.

Newbie with engine swap question
HOrnbrod replied to chelvis's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Buick aluminum V8? I haven't heard about anyone stuffing one into an MJ, but it and it's Rover cousin was a popular swap back in the day, and still is to some extent. I've thought a lot about it though and would be my choice if I didn't have a stroker already. If it fits in under an MGB bonnet, it sure would fit in an MJ. http://www.britishv8.org/mg/robertmilks.htm -
Anyone ever splurged for this starter...
HOrnbrod replied to Jtrux's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They are smaller and lighter than the stock starters, si? Also it looks like you can use different holes for mounting? That would be nice so the solenoid could be rotated a bit away from the larger oil filters I use. -
Need a new fuel pump/sending unit

You're right - I just corrected my post above. -
Need a new fuel pump/sending unit
HOrnbrod replied to Wood90's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No such animal as an MJ 13 gallon fuel tank. The smallest tank in a 1990 MJ would be 16 gallon. But with the baffle setup it doesn't really hold much more than 13 gallons anyhow. Good idea, but I don't think you can use the 86 MJ diesel tank because it's designed for a LWB vehicle. It won't physically fit in your SWB rig. EDIT: ^^^ That's wrong. Looked up the tank fitment; it's designed for the 113" wheelbase (SWB), 18 gallon capacity, 29.75" long, so it should fit fine. -

^^ This. Also, if necessary, replace your tired old OEM starter with a good quality new or NOS unit for $50-$70. I just replaced my original 25 year old starter with a NOS unit and the motor spins at twice the RPM as before when starting. -
Crankshaft Position Senson Pigtail

i don't use those places unless it's an emergency. Edit: $6.99 OBO. The Ebay seller accepts considerably less. -

HOrnbrod replied to 90comancheswb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
$6.99 w. free shipping is stupidly overpriced? I just ordered the below to replace the stupid non-locking connectors the 91's and 92's come with. Been planning on doing this for some time - OP, thanks for the reminder. You can have my old one when I get it soldered in. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-x-Set-Female-and-Male-Connector-Plug-3-way-3-pin-WeatherPack-Electrical-Wire-/252337300873?hash=item3ac079a589:g:OtEAAOSwgQ9VtPg7&vxp=mtr -
A/C R12-to-R12a Refrigerant Recharge Results
HOrnbrod replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
THIS is the company line. It goes in the system just like an R12a can. I didn't use it because I had no leakage. I've also heard that it can gum up and clog things too, but I'm far from an A/C expert. -

HOrnbrod replied to 90comancheswb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
..........like THIS. It's a better connector with less voltage drop than the round factory connector. These connectors were only used in 91-92 and then changed to a weatherpack type connector. -

All-in-all not to shabby. That bumper must weigh close to a metric ton. -

Open System - slowly overheats until 260
HOrnbrod replied to Big Dan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Si, built-in burper when you flush and change coolant in an open system. Drain, fill, start engine, let it warm up, watch temp gauge for the ~20* drop when it burps around ~220*, shut off, coolant if necessary to overflow bottle, done. No parking on a hill, pulling the temp sensor on the head, squeezing the hoses, etc. etc. needed like you have to do with the crappy closed system. -

Too many years ago Bo - I've forgotten all that good stuff from "A" school back in the 60's. The only thing I remember is the mnemonic for the resistor color code: Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly = Black Brown Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet Grey White -

HOrnbrod replied to Big Dan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Been there - done that. I got a new brass radiator years ago from a respected manufacturer (think it was Griffin) and it would overheat like yours. I pulled it out and shook it and it rattled. The damn thing was full of solder balls from the factory! They were jamming off the water passages so badly it could hardly flow. As far as thermostats, spend the extra $$ at the dealer and get the Mopar 195* stat with the jiggle valve, p/n 52028186. They are the best there is, I've never had a bad one. -
Correct. One is tied to Logic Ground; the other goes to the XJ overhead console compass ground if equipped.

HOrnbrod replied to 90comancheswb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Do you mean the round 3 male pin connector from the sensor body than plugs into the engine harness? Or the female connector end on the engine harness? You can't buy one separately, but you can get the complete 91-92 CPS on Ebay for ~$10 and cut/splice it on whatever you're trying to do. -
Dana 44 wheel cylinders
HOrnbrod replied to onlyinajeep726's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If it's an XJ or MJ Dana 44, the wheel cylinders are the same and interchangeable with the D35, no differences. P/n's are 52000848 (Right) & 52000849 (Left).
