Heck even when it was 14 degrees (-10 Celsius) Tuesday morning I had warm air come out of my defrost vents before I had driven a mile (1.6 km). I'm guessing thermostat stuck open, but a quick (temporary) fix would be to stick a piece of cardboard between the grill and radiator.

Truck only Starts in Neutral???
mvusse replied to ComancheKid45's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My NSS is broken. I can start my truck (AW4) in any gear. If it is in gear, the moment it starts and revs up it lurches forward (or backward, depending on what gear). -
What is the function of that block? I found it (and had a heckuva time getting it out) when installing my C4x4 hooks, and never did figure out what it's for.

Old Land Rovers supposedly aren't that reliable. I used to know a guy that had one. He was always complaining that every time he took it off road for a day he would spend 2 weeks fixing it afterwards. I kept asking him why he kept taking his Land Rover off road instead of hit FJ40.

Skid Plate for Transfer Case

Cool! -
Too bad. I need a 7 footer. I will probably go with my original plan and go on vacation down south some time in spring to get one. I know there are good ones for cheap in TX, I'm hoping I won't have to go that far, though.

Truck only Starts in Neutral???

My Ford didn't have one (after market floor shifter for a 3 speed), and I mounted a toggle on the dash for backup lights. -
My one control arm would not hold a bushing. I could move the control arm side to side while the bushing stayed put. When I removed it the bushings just fell out (they should be a press fit). New bushings popped in and out using my fingers... Got better used control arms and uses a press to press in the new bushings. I have aftermarket control arms now that are WAY better than the factory ones.

Also, instead of measuring from the top of the tire to the fender flare (which depends on tire size), measure from the center of the wheel to the fender flare, both front and back.

Skid Plate for Transfer Case
mvusse replied to hogelectra's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I also have an XJ transfer case skid on my MJ. If your truck didn't come with skid plates from the factory, the frame and cross member do not have the nutserts for the bolts, but the holes are there. I just used short 5/16 bolts with nylon lock nuts instead. Nutserts are not expensive, but the tool to put them in is. -
Jeepman: That box you have, what size is it, what shape is it in and how much do you want for it? I travel between OH and Ontario a number of times a year and even though I usually cross at Port Huron/Sarnia, I could (and have) cross at Buffalo/Fort Erie which would take me by Hamilton. Might be interested some time late winter/early spring.

The letters can be filled in with body filler.

As for the DW, start by inspecting the easy to check things, like track bar loose at either end, lca bushings worn (or loose), play in tie rod ends. Also take a tape measure and try to measure your toe in. It is supposed to be 0. After I lifted my front I had DW so violently at only 35 mph that it killed the bearings in my alternator. Also popped off the radio face plate, opened the glove box and dropped the ds visor. Turned out the lift pulled up on the steering, causing 2" toe in. Aligned it as close to 0 as I could measure and all is fine again. Could also be caused by an out of balance front tire. Rotating your tires front to back would eliminate that, or could be done to check. There could be 101 causes for DW, and they have 101 different fixes. Besides my alignment problem after the lift, my truck had DW when I bought it. Was caused by a combination of a bad lca and a worn out track bar frame mount allowing play (and possibly a bad front axle U joint). A while after I fixed it it came back, and this time is was the track bar being loose at the frame mount because the cotter pin came out and the castle nut backed off half a turn. I now have after market adjustable track bar and control arms and the steering and front suspension are tighter than they have ever been. Better even than a friend's 01 Grand Cherokee. My buddy's XJ had DW when he bought it, and it was also caused by play at the frame side track bar mount. New track bar and better used bracket (that did not have an elongated hole like the original) fixed his. Seems to me a worn track bar bracket is a common cause.

Maybe that is because this company makes armoured vehicles based on your choice of Landrover, G-class Mercedes or GM Yukon/Tahoe platform. :shake: You can get unshielded, shielded or double shielded. The unshielded ones are not armoured, but still provide excellent heat resistance for comfortable use in desert or arctic weather conditions.

Ummmm, when I took apart my old fubar fuel pump to see what it looked like inside, the fuel was actually pumped *through* the motor, right by the armature. As long as there is fuel to be sucked in, the armature is completely immersed. That's not a bad thing, though. The contact points between the brushes and the armature create sparks. Not very bg ones, but a LOT of them. Multiple ones per revolution. But liquid gasoline does not burn. What burns are the gasoline vapors above the liquid. The other element needed is oxygen. Being immersed in liquid gasoline, you have no vapor and no oxygen available.

What's so great about a Comanche?
mvusse replied to bilgamesh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
From the Ohio Revised Code (imagine other states to be similar): (A) As used in this section, “historical motor vehicle” means any motor vehicle that is more than twenty-five years old and that is owned solely as a collector’s item and for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar uses, but in no event is used for general transportation. Unless you can convince the officer that you are participating in a "club activity, exhibition, tour, parade or similar use", be prepared to be fined for illegal plates. These laws are not normally enforced, but if they see you drive by a few days in a row, they might start asking questions.
