1991 4.0 automatic 2wd Metric Ton D44. 1st MJ project.
mvusse replied to steve91mj's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I have heard that a number of 91 and especially 92 Comanches had a D44 for no apparent reason other than that's what was still sitting on the shelf so they used it. But yes, Cherokees did not have the D44 as an option after 1989 (90?) I believe, 90 was still the D35, 91 they moved to the Chrysler 8.25. Then again, I could be wrong. -
Installed a new hub today. Easy peasy lemon squeezy 45 minute job. I like it when a plan comes together. Or at least when everything goes according to plan for a change. Test drive and almost no more front end vibration/shimmy/shake that I've been experiencing for a few thousand miles now. Passenger ball joints need to be replaced as well, but after inspecting them very carefully I decided they can wait a few months till it warms up enough outside to do the job at home. So now she's locked in front and ready to go again.

I would go for it, although I prefer the wing vent windows. MJ has them, XJ does not and I wish it did.

Cussed it out, kicked it hard enough to hurt my foot after busting one tool and having to buy a $100 one I didn't have yet, and spent 11 hours installing an Aussie in the front. Actually, the install was 2 hours, most of the other 9 was to get the passenger side hub off. Gotta do it again tomorrow as it's bad (lotsa play in the bearing).

My Comanche has a 4.5" lift so can't help with it, but my Cherokee has Skyjackers. VERY harsh ride.

You can shift on the fly between 2wd and 4hi. Transmission has to be in neutral and speed <3mph to shift to 4lo.

Well, I started at noon today. Was back home before 1 because of the above mentioned problems. After checking the web I decided to go to Harbor Freight and bought an electric 400 ft/lbs impact wrench. By 3 I was back working on the truck. The impact worked, but it took a few minutes to bust the nut loose. I then still had to remove the hub. Technically I didn't need to remove the hub nut, as I could pull the hub with the axle attached as one unit. But the bearings are bad, so I had (have) to replace the hub anyway. It has 1/8" play every direction. Up/down, forward/rearward, in/out. I removed the brake backing plate while I was at it. Other side was easy. That hub has been off twice already this past year, and applied liberal amount of grease before putting it back on. By 7 I finally had the differential carrier out and on the bench. Couldn't do the install in place because the ring gear was too fat for the center shaft to come out. By 8:45 the Aussie was in, and by 9 it was back in the axle. By the time I had everything back together, tested, filled with oil and cleaned up it was 11 o'clock. 3 hour install my butt! So tomorrow I still have to get a new hub and install it (gotta tear that side apart again), and some time this year I will do away with the vacuum lines and build my own posi-lock. Pictures to follow, but not today.

:fs1: :headpop:  :( :wall:  :grrrr: :fs2:  $^*@%$@&$^*(@)# 15 minutes into installing the Aussie I broke my breaker bar, found out the passenger hub is bad, and pretty sure the passenger side ball joints are bad. All while attempting to remove the hub nut. Don't know if the ball jounts and hub were bad before (looking back, I believe they were and have been for a while), or if I just broke them. Don't know if I can remove the hub nut without snapping the axle shaft. I know my current tools won't cut it. Have to invest in either: 3/4 breaker bar, 3/4 drive socket and longer pipe, or BF impact ratchet. At least the socket I have for it is meant for an impact ratchet. Hub alone is $75 with a 1 year warranty, add ball joints and I might just say to heck with it and see if I can get whole axle cheap

Project Tetanus - H4s & Herculiner
mvusse replied to UNL1MTD's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
My factory replacement harness (off an XJ (91?)) has the ground wire on the side market light hooked up to the turn signal wire. So they both blink, but out of phase which each other. Still have the remains of my original harness, though (got cut up and mostly respliced after a deer messed up the front of the truck before I bough it), because it has the wiring and relay for fog lights. Once I get my replacement fog lights I will use both harnesses to make one with fog lights AND blinking side marker light. -
I'm guessing interference between the axle and oil pan. Maybe use S10 parts or other independent front suspension.

The J8 supposedly comes with a 2.8l turbo diesel. Not a Comanche, but still a Jeep p/u truck. Wonder if/when they will be available to the general public in the US.

Best way to Lower a Comanche
mvusse replied to skaterguy58's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you make a custom spring pack using a Comanche main leaf and Cherokee leafs for the rest of the pack it will drop you some also as the Cherokee springs are flatter. Don't know how much, though. -
Front Rear Tow Hooks with Stock Bumpers?
mvusse replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Miscommunication. When I read "lateral brackets" I think to support side pulls. That would be the L brackets shown as #27. A friend of mine bought a set of after market tow hook brackets off another side because they cost $5 less than the C4x4 ones. Exact same main brackets, but no L brackets included. -
As of 4:12 in Ohio: 44 degrees, sun attempting to poke through the clouds. A lot better than the 7 degrees earlier this morning, and a whole lot better than the 2-4 inches of snow they were still forecasting for today as of 11:30 last night.

Front Rear Tow Hooks with Stock Bumpers?
mvusse replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Custom 4x4 brackets do have the lateral brackets with them, as shown in the picture, and mine came with hooks included. I have been happy with them so far. The bolts for the hooks themselves were slightly smaller than the holes, though, so trying to yank a tree stump out off to my side it shifted the hook itself. Did not bend the bracket. Loosen bolts, straighten hook out, tighten bolts again. For a rear tow point I installed an OEM class III receiver hitch, stick the tow strap into the receiver hole and stuck the hitch pin through it. Don't like the 3" less ground clearance I have because of it, though. Don't know what else you could do without getting a custom bumper. -
I saw "MUD" and immediately though Multi User Dungeon. I guess I'm getting old. topic>

1347 would most likely be 1.5Mb/s, which is a common DSL speed. Most DSL providers have an "economy" 768Kb/s package and their 3.0Mb/s high end. 1.5Mb/s is halfway in between. My parents live in the middle of nowhere in Canada and get 8Mb/s DSL for $15 per month. That's the normal rate, not some advertised low introductory rate that goes up after a while. I guess not *everything* in Canada is more expensive. In the US we pay more for high speed internet than almost anywhere else in the world.

Might the 3800 having gone through 5 transmission be a problem with your right foot, and not the torque of the engine? :D
-
What engine? 2.5l 4 cyl or 4.0l straight 6?
-
Okay, now I'm jealous.

I am paying for the regular Roadrunner, but when I downloaded a 5MB file in about 3 seconds a few months ago I decided to run a speed test again. I used to get 7Mb/s, getting 15 now. So pay for the regular, but have turbo. I decided that's not a problem for me. About 100 MB/minute on large downloads, but only in the wee hours of the morning when the net is quiet.

Parked her in the (heated) shop at work so she doesn't get 4" of snow on her and I can install the Aussie Sunday without having to lay in a puddle of water.

where can i buy a sye in canada for good price
mvusse replied to comanche13's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Cherokees will need a SYE due to the short rear drive shaft. Comanches are longer and thus have a longer rear drive shaft. 5.5" will be just fine without a SYE. 6.5" will still be fine. -
Aussie is here! Aussie is here! Aussie is here!       Sorry, got a little excited. Should be installing it Sunday.
