Thanks. The 2.5 is pretty unimpressive but it will do for now. After I get it driving a little nicer and get a chance to enjoy it where gonna drop a 318 in it. Was thinking about a 4.0 but decided on a v8 instead, hard to beat the sound. Nice job on your truck by the way. Reminds me alot of mine, except nice.

Did you build that bumper or buy it and if you bought it where?
-
Down the line I'm going to put together a set of axles for the truck but for now I'm more focused on getting the ball rolling on the engine swap.

amc motors are a bit expensive to put together, but they don't break hardly ever. and I think you're misleading yourself and giving in to a bunch of idiots with lead foots; the amc 360 is capable of 23mpg highway EASY. all you have to do is do a mild build, and keep a light foot. I guarantee you that that is fact...my dad used to drive FSJ pickups exclusively, and he was getting between 17mpg and 23mpg with them depending on how he drove. that's the same as our trucks get now, for a huge amount of power. idk why you're hellbent on a v8 either...I put a mildly built 3.8 camaro v6 in my 86 mj and get between 19 and 29 mpg with it depending on how hard (or nice) I drive it, and I can haul away from any v6 camaro, any basic 4.0, and I blew the damned doors off of my friend's rotary RX-7, leaving him to eat fumes (and he's a professional racer) I say look for better options. the SBC is the only "bolt-in" setup, other than that, you get to fab. I am well aware that it will take some fabrication to do it and that doesn't bother me. There is absolutely no way I will put a SBC in my truck or any kind of chevy motor. I work at a chey garage and I see the problems with there motors. There is no engine more expensive to get horsepower out of. No offense but if your dads truck got 23mpg AMC would have bought it back and figured out how they did it. The 318 is a good reliable motor with decent power and respectable fuel mileage and its not something everybodys doing.

For a time I considered it but the AMC v8s are alot more expensive to put together, and I have never seen one that was decent on gas. The 318 is a good engine, decent on gas for a v8 good power and parts tend to be cheaper and easier to come by.

I'm getting tired of sinking money into my 2.5 and not getting any results. I want to swap in dodge 318 and use a 5speed out of a dodge dakota. From what I understand a jeep 231tcase will bolt in place of the 231 on a dakota. Anybody done a 318 swap in a comanche? Any information would be apreciated. Thanks for and help?

Started putting my new intake gasket in, found a busted bolt at the back of the manifold, found that the drivers side motor mount was bad witch probably was why the exhaust hit the floor and the tcase shifter popped out of 4wd. Decided to put a timing chain in it and found that it had a newer chain but the tensioner was bad, so I have to wait for that part to show up. To much fun.

Thanks for the link. Just ordered a set.

Put it on the lift at work to see why it makes so many noises when I make a turn, greased everything, removed my front driveshaft to find that it was shot, and realized my truck needs about a 100 thousand other things. The joys of owning a 21yr old truck.

Missed your post. Glad they caught the sob. On a side note, is that a Chrismas tree in whats left of your bed.

Man that sucks. Glad you and your son are ok. If theres anything I can do let me know. Any chance of getting the guy?
-
Wow. Sorry about the truck but what were you thinking? What happened? How did you do all that on one trail?

I had an 88 jeep comanche pioneer 4.0 4x4 5spd as my dd awhile ago. Right now my dd is a 2008 chevy colorado. The comanche ran better, drove better and rode better. I also had a toyota pickup that we bought as a woods truck. It was cheap, drove like crap and ran even worse. I've also had a ranger, a dakota, an explorer, and driven alot a of other small trucks. By far the truck I liked the most was the comanche. If those few problems get taken care of you'll probably like the truck. If not there are classified ads on here. Either way good luck with your decision.

My 1986 Comanche 2.5L Custom Restomod. Updated!

The front bumper and brushgaurd are sweet. Almost looks like granite wear or something. -
1. I work at a chevy dealership and am a diehard chrysler fan. 2. I have been a licensed driver for 3 years and have owned 16 vehicles that were road legal, 8 of which were jeeps. 3. I have never had a dog that wasn't named after a vehicle. 4. I own a 2008 chevy colorado and only bought it to build enough credit to buy a wrangler or dakota next year. 5. I paid $350 for my 87 comanche and have close to $2000 in parts into it and it doesnt move under its own power, yet.

I think I've seen that truck on here before. Did you buy it off a board member? Looks good either way.
-
Thats quite the find. Looks like its in great shape. What plans do you have for it?
-
Thats really cool but why would they go through all that trouble to make an granite sculpture of an s-10? LIKE A ROCK :laughin:

Converting an Auto to Manual?
onebigmj replied to 702_MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would go with a stick any day of the week. More fun better mileage and less loss of power through the auto trany. Did you consider going with an Ax15, alot more simple. Oh, whats the deal with the truck parked beside you, looks bad@$$. -
Wow. I used to think my truck was in good shape till I saw yours. Nice truck man. That things gonna be sweet no matter what you do to it.
