I gotta have vent windows. My current rig doesn't have them but I want them. I wish the MJs had the footwell vents like the J-Trucks or K-10s and whatnot. My current rig doesn't have a rear slider either, another thing I want to remedy since I consider it must have too.

Not very easy. I just happened to get lucky and a guy on IFSJA who no longer had a FSJ was getting rid of parts he had in storage, brush guard happened to be one such part and I jumped on it since he was in the same state. Finding a solid one is even harder since they rusted out at the curve of the square tube since the ends of them were not capped and mud and stuff would get slung inside from the tires. It would be easy for a shop to fabricate one I would think, the thing is very simple in construction.

My '74 J10 with a 3spd wanted to get out of 1st ASAP as well, as-in halfway through a turn at an intersection. You'll get use to driving it with time and figure out just what it likes the more you drive it. I'm with Eagle though, don't start in second unless you feel like changing a clutch is just a good activity for slow weekends.

The brush guard on the Twister truck is factory, at least in that picture. They had several trucks, and they didn't do a good job making them identical. For example: The truck in that pic doesn't have a brow, but in several scenes of the movie there is a brow on the truck. Anyways, yea... factory guard. Had one just like it on my '74. There are two versions, one for the 3pc bumper like on the older trucks, and one for the 1pc 80s bumper like on the twister truck. They can both be modified to work on each, all it requires is the mounting tabs to be cut off and relocated. Something that was not done yet in this pic, and you can tell by the end pieces of my bumper sticking away from the middle piece. Ignore the googly eyes, only pics I have of the brush guard on includes the eyes in it.

Kind of side-tracking my own thread here a bit, but go check out Pat's rig. He did the 3800 thing, and yes it does destroy the AX-5. Not that I'd be worried about that since I would be swapping to auto no matter what engine I end up going with in the end.
-
Yup, has a fuel injection kit on it (should have taken the filter off and snapped a pic). Which does bring up a good point of just dropping in a 3.4L and running with it, though I have been doing a lot of reading on 96+ 3800 engines since I hate doing maintenance on the 3.4L. Even changing spark plugs is a royal pain and the timing chain is even worse. Even been thinking about just swapping in a 2.5L. Though an engine swap is a long ways off, for now the 2.8L is fine so long as it stops smoking. I've not had a chance to mess with it anymore than getting fuel into it and getting it semi-tuned to run better and not so rough. From lots of reading I am hoping the smoke is just from it sitting for 8 months or so and will take care of itself once fluids are changed and it gets ran for awhile.

Prep is huge with diy liner. The stuff I've been around becomes brittle with time and constant UV exposure and will just come off in chunks if it wasn't prepped well.

Yea, the silver one I believe? Did not look good at all if ya ask me. J-Trucks are J-Trucks and MJs are MJs, they should not breed. :soap box:

:agree: Flowmaster 40 or 50 sounds the best on a 4.0 to me.

 on the wood grain, love those things. I really need to find one to go with my black interior. Here's to hoping for an easy fix. I would lean towards rear end issue, but couldn't say for sure. -
My '74 had the Razor and it really grew on me to become my favorite. Totally gave up wanting to swap a Rhino onto it.
-
Needs a brow and a Razor grille. Does look clean but just how clean is it truly under that paint. My 74 only had minor rust and zero bondo, so nice ones are out there for sure.

I was afraid a radiator replacement was my best choice, just was hoping a cheaper option would work. Rockauto seems to have some that claim to be OE replacement for the 2.8L, guess I will just have to order one and find out. If I do end up having to modify, hopefully I can move the rad forward to give my electric fan some more clearance.

Noticed today while looking over the new rig a bit more that there are small twigs and other crud in the radiator when I removed the cap. What would be the best course of action to clean it out? Would taking it for a flush do it or is there something else that should be done? Last thing I need is an actual reason for the 2.8L to explode on me.

Stock with different wheels though. Maybe a small lift and some 31's if I feel like being crazy.

Just unloaded the new MJ from the flatbed and got it parked. Got the itch again a few weeks back so started looking for a new one. This makes my forth Comanche, and my second '86 X. An '86 may not be my first choice, but the body is only just starting to show cancer at the wheel wells and because of some other options on it I decided to grab it. The rebuilt engine with Holley and Edelbrock parts didn't hurt either. It is a fancier version of my first X (this one has lots of chrome, roll bar, factory lights, black interior, and the engine tweaks to list a few) and has an awesome two-tone paint scheme (which for now I plan on keeping) that seems to be the reverse of all the ones I've seen in these colors. It runs really well, sounds much stronger than the 2.8L that was in my first '86, and has a lot going for it once it warms up and I find the time to clean it up I think. Though it is still the dreaded 2.8L, so quite a ways down the road that will be replaced with something better. Probably a 4.0L HO and I'm thinking an AW4 with an NP242, plus a better rear axle. PO claims the engine and tranny were rebuilt about 30k ago when the Edelbrock and Holley stuff was then added, but he couldn't find any of the paperwork so that is up in the air. He seemed like a good guy and this was actually one of several MJs he has owned, so I want to lean towards it being truth. Right now it is non-op since the slave cylinder is out, so once it warms back up I will fix that. It is also in need of some new shocks, already have those picked out and I'll order them in the coming weeks. Tires are practically new though, so it has that going for it. Only cancer I have found so far is what is just starting along the wheel wells and a small-ish spot on the driver side floor. The rest is surface where paint has peeled off. Inside of the bed is clean of rust, mind the finger in the photo. Fog lights and roll bar lights don't appear to work, I'll have to check bulbs and such then dig into the wiring if needed I guess. Tailgate needs replaced since it is bent a bit and the handle doesn't work well. It has a vent window only on the passenger side door, which is rusty and needs replaced anyways, so I need to find two replacements or one solid replacement. I'd like to swap the bench for buckets since I basically hate bench seats, but I have a feeling finding black buckets with a full center console will be next to impossible. I also want to swap out the solid rear window for a 3pc slider if I can find one. I know I could order a new 4pc, but after owning both I prefer the stock 3pc one. I also want turbines and have the large 4x4 door/side decals reproduced in blue to get the look I truly want. For now though, have some pics as those speak better than words. It has been sitting in a woods for around eight months give or take, so it needs scrubbed and de-cobwebbed pretty badly. That will have to wait for warmer weather as well though and takes second place to getting it running and such. And upon taking the driver side door panel off to get the window back up, I found this between the plastic and the cardboard of the panel. A little faded, but I'll scan it and see if I can work some photoshop magic when I have the time. Overall not a bad way to jump head first back into the addiction, and it was basically what I was looking for other than the 2.8L. A daily drive-able project to have fun with and enjoy. And yea, a lot of pics. But I like to have them for documentary purposes to look back on. Also as reference for my forgetful nature, I'm jotting down a plan of things to-do. Fix clutch Remove and flush radiator / reservoir tank Replace all fluids New windshield Fix rust and repaint (rattle can flats or Monstaliner the whole body?) Figure out the one non-functioning fog light Figure out non-functioning gauges Replace gauge cluster with full (tach) version Tonneau cover, taken to have modified to fit with roll bar Monstaliner the bed Replace bench with buckets Replace tailgate Unbend bumpers or replace (I'm thinking JCR) Bushwackers? Rocker guards 3" or 6" SOA lift? More to come...

Yea, my plans to conform all my usernames to the same one for the Jeep forums I'm on backfired once I purchased another '86, so I went back to my original name here. And I think if I'm going to pay to have a tailgate shipped I think I'll hold out for a straight one. If JY near you are running out, you gotta stop destroying one of the harder parts to find. :p

http://comancheclub.com/topic/1903-91-eliminator-4x4/?p=18233 Third image down is the best I can do, I'm sure more will chime in. Swore I had more but the ones I've pulled off my hdd that accidentally got formatted awhile ago have all been angle shots so far of my old '86.

Have you ever had the charging system tested at an Auto Zone or anywhere? My guess is bad alternator.
-
I used 2x4x1/4 for rocker replacement for my '86 mounted the same way I opted for the 4" wide box so it sits flush with the body. This also provides less leverage for a rock to twist the box around when compared to the 6" box. I have come down hard on the driver side when dropping down a ledge. Seems I forgot I was in a LWB MJ on 235's and not in my TJ with 35's..... The box didn't move or twist. Those look stronger, and they are braced. Being flush with the body they don't have the pivot the wider ones have if they were to get smacked down hard on the outermost edge. Dirteatr just didn't mention anything about braces being added so that's where my main comment is directed to, because without that the wider ones are very prone to making the sheet metal flex with enough force. Well he did sort of, but not in a way that made it sound like they were in the works unless a cage was being added as well.

'91+ gauges are electronic. Thanks though.

The one in Hilliard? Good luck getting in touch with the guy. Had no price and originally mentioned that he was looking to trade for something with a 5spd, preferably an Integra or something. Now it says they want a Ram in trade. Tried to get in touch with him about seeing if he would just sell it and I never got a response or anything any of the times I tried so gave up and got another.
