  1. Nice. I like that they're including the option codes now instead of just the interpretation of the option code, some of which have changed what they refer to in their database.
  2. The thing about your peak torque is that your dyno runs are at wide-open throttle and 100% engine load. What happens at low load and part throttle isn't necessarily going to be reflected in your power runs. The other thing is you need a specific amount of power to keep you moving at a certain speed, no matter which gear you're in, and you need to burn a specific amount of fuel to maintain that power level which will consume a specific volume of air, even if the air is moving more quickly through the engine. Yes there may be more efficient extraction of power from the fuel at certain speeds, but it's not going to be a huge difference, and the extra power needed to keep everything spinning faster is likely just going to negate that. So pretty much colour me pessimistic that it'll have any effect at all, but it's worth a shot and I am curious, and I trust Hornbrod will be as scientific as possible about recording the effects. I'll add that in the brief amount of time spent driving my Lada with fifth gear (until it quit staying in gear) it did tend to get slightly better mpg than it did in fourth, although the difference was negligeable compared to the difference between two different drivers with different driving styles after fifth became useless again. But this doesn't really have much bearing either, because the Niva is an entirely different animal.

  4. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I just use all 190 ponies when I drive. Also a couple of those tanks were messing around in deep fresh snow. For some reason pushing snow with your bumpers in 4lo isn't great for mpg? Or sitting idling because it's -30 outside. Or doing 100+mph.

  7. Nominally 235/75/15's are only 6% bigger diameter than 205/75/15's, but nominal diameter generally doesn't give an accurate picture of what's going on. Plus as tires wear depending on the tire you could lose as much as if not more than a half-inch of diameter. The best way to confirm your speedometer (and odometer)'s accuracy is with either a gps speedometer (get an app for your phone) or one of those flashing radar "your speed" signs, if you can be sure it's pointed at you. I'm sure there's a ton of unhappy people out there if you're driving 5% under the limit everywhere.
  8. Try posting in the classifieds section, keep an eye on Craigslist and eBay, jump on it if something shows up. Good luck, they've been out of production for a long time. Some members have managed to modify XJ sending units to work, and there are also outfits that will rebuild your existing sending unit for you.
  9. Does it grind while coasting in gear, in neutral, clutch in/out? my thought would be the rear diff is having issues, but that's really just a guess.
  10. Crazily enough I recently saw another one get posted on a province-wide Jeep group not long after I got mine. Needless to say it was long gone waaaaaaay before I even saw the post, haha. Woulda jumped on that even though it would've cost me more than the $350 to drag it home. But back to my own ZJ. So the button-gluing lasted all of about 16 hours. I threw a couple more attempts at the wall but couldn't get one to stick. Was going to just wait till I went to the city to pull one at a wrecking yard, (sucks living 200 miles from the nearest one) but after spilling my third drink I gave up waiting and ordered one off eBay. Used from a '96 Laredo from a yard near Houston, TX, I think. Slim pickings for ZJ handbrake levers, so the $80 was worth it. For chuckles I stopped in at a dealer on the way past and they could order one for me, from "Mopar Vintage" (WTF, it's younger than I am!) to the tune of $350, which, um... No. Because I'm just about already doing this: But I digress. ZJ handbrake lever. Right. Top is the "new" one, bottom is my original. The two are different. eBay said it wouldn't work, I figured there was no reason they would've changed it. But there is a difference. My original looks a lot beefier at the bottom end, the pivot and mounting points. Not sure if that's a '93 vs '96 thing or a manual vs auto thing, being the manual one would maybe need to be more durable? I dunno. The newer one has fewer and bigger teeth on the ratchet though. They also have almost no wear on them, surprise surprise. Seems like almost zero ZJ owners ever bothered using their handbrakes. Pretty well the only results for handbrake stuff I found online were all along the lines of "I moved and need to pass an inspection and OMG all the handbrake parts are seized so it failed". But the newer lever fit perfectly and works great. It's a simple change, just two bolts once the centre console is off. Which is the thing I'm most excited about: CUPHOLDERS!!!!! YAY!!!! Been driving around without the console so I could manually engage and disengage the ratchet. No cup holders and mi amigo Manuél is difficult. Also, yeah it's kinda dirty it there. It came that way. Once I've got all the interior niggles sorted I'm going to get it detailed professionally. The biggest thing there is the driver's door card armrest is duct taped together. Gonna try to junkyard that, I can live with it for now. I also need to get rid of the nasty purple stick-on window tint which has fun-house-mirror effects on my vision through the windows. Thinking about trying to find some factory tint windows for it, if I can figure out how to pull them.
  11. I'm one of the MJ's on there. Haven't used it for a long @$$ time though. I think I threw out about 15000 miles worth of fuel receipts last summer on the grounds I was never going to bother getting around to putting them in. I've been thinking about starting up again to track the ax15 ZJ's economy... For science. Cause there ain't no one out there doing that.

  13. I think I usually got 14-15mpg around the city too. Although my "city" driving usually meant hitting the 90km/h ring road as often as possible. That said I never got near 23mpg on the highway. I'm pretty sure I've only averaged 20 a couple times, and that was almost always following the Trans Canada from Alberta to 'Toba, which is a steady but very slight downhill with nothing to slow down for, and generally comes with a tailwind. The ZJ on the other hand, 4.0/ax15/3.55's, if the gauge is to be taken as accurate and linear (doubtful) currently seems to be averaging about 21mpg around town... It's been 280 miles so far and the gauge just dropped below half. It's pretty nice to have a 23 gallon tank in my daily again. I mean the $100 fills hurt but there's always gas in it. Seemed like every time I turned around the Saint needed gas into its 16 gallon. The Lada's 11-gallon tank was worse. I'm almost tempted to go fill the ZJ just to confirm that mileage. I'm sorta curious what rpm you're turning on the highway, @HOrnbrod, also what you're shifting at. I've been trying to keep the ZJ between 1500 and 2000 rpm around town. Shift light comes on around 1800 rpm but then I shift and I'm doing 1200 or less and I'm not convinced that's the best idea. IIRC the MJ shifted around 2500 or so on power. The first little while I was using comfort (and possibly then getting better mpg) but then I got used to power and thought comfort shifted kinda weird. Not sure how much difference it would make though. I remember a friend of mine telling me how he used to do 70km/h on his late-night through the city commute (in 50 zones; 45/30 mph) cause that's when he noticed his torque converter locking up, and he kept doing it because he also started noticing better mpg. I wouldn't necessarily condone that, but it is a thing. As far as how the computer controls the lockup? It really doesn't take much throttle at all and it unlocks. It didn't take much of a hill on cruise control at 60mph to unlock it. Older torque converters aren't hugely efficient either, and probably the vanes will erode somewhat with use, further reducing efficiency. Modern torque converters on the other hand keep surprising me with how readily they jump forward when you take you're foot off the brake at idle. I imagine that plays a bit of a role in the better mpg newer vehicles are getting. Sorry for the long winded and rambling response. It's a bit of a hypothetical question so that's a theoretical answer.
  14. They look to me like they came out of a minivan. If not the front then maybe a captain's chair middle row. For the most part minivan seats seem to be fairly "normal" seats that can be available both as benches or buckets, that mount via "leg" brackets to a flat floor. They also do convenient flips and folds for easy removal. The anchoring systems are a bit odd because of the quick-release nature of the seats, but probably not too awful to adapt... My mind sprung to the late 90's/early 2000's GM minivans. We had one when I was a kid and I've had the misfortune of having to use a handful at work over the years. But there's a bunch of different bench options, various segmentations depending on how you want your split, middle and rear benches or captains, etc. But I wanna say they all fold mostly flat, some even have cup holders in the back of them, like the 50/50 split 3-person rear bench in this horrible video:
  15. Yeah. It's on the list of things I would eventually enjoy reproducing. I just don't think it's worth the $800 I'd end up paying after shipping and exchange. Then more for import duty thanks to Trump's tariffs.
  16. It just looks wrong. The handle doesn't really fit in the "holder", or the shape doesn't seem right, or something. It just looks off.
  17. I think the coyotes, foxes, and odd stray cat have been keeping a pretty good handle on the furry friends that would venture into my garage. I've seen a squirrel in the yard the odd time or two, but that's it for signs of rodent activity. The wildlife conflict guys have been doing a much better job of keeping the elk out of the yard this year too.

And if you'll notice, most of them involved a collision of some kind. Cars catching fire after a collision is a fairly normal occurance, which is why fire departments are the first responders dispatched to collisions. Yeah there's a little bit of a learning curve to extinguishing electric car fires, but we'll get there pretty soon. And yes there's more media attention to them catching fire because it's a newer technology (not really) going wrong. Other things catch fire too. Phones and laptops also caught a lot of attention because they catch fire. How many people do you know who have a laptop or mobile phone, and how many of them have caught fire? Explorers flip, but I don't know of anyone who's rolled one. Pintos explode, yet my mom wrote off not one but two of them as a kid and she's still around. Hell, apparently XJ's and ZJ's have their fuel tanks rupture and explode often enough they recalled every single one of them twenty years after the fact, and while I know more than a few XJ's that have been written off after a collision, and seen tons in wrecking yards, I've yet to see one with fire damage outside the dash or engine bay. We will definitely start seeing electric vehicles become the norm within our lifetimes. Hell, quite a few European cities have internal combustion engine sales scheduled for bans in the not-so-distant future. Yeah there's going to a bit of a learning curve with them as with anything else, but being afraid of it is only going to make it worse. People like vehicles that are low-maintenance, quiet, and smooth. Back when the car first became a thing, electric cars were very popular for exactly that reason. Internal combustion only took off because of its greater convenience when people started wanting to hit the open road in their cars, and battery technology circa 1900 just wasn't there, but it's here now, and just needs a few more years for infrastructure to catch up. Yeah there are hiccups along the way, but then again there's hiccups with established technology too. How hard would you expect it to be to screw up an ignition cylinder? Or a headlight switch? But apparently those are also things that happen. Personally I'm excited for EV tech to be coming of age. I can't wait to be able to affordably convert a vehicle. Sure the noise and mechanical brutality of internal combustion is cool. So are steam engines. I would love a steam-powered car too, but they're simply not practical.

  20. Brake drums tend to get a lip in them as they wear down, and if there's one that's noticeable to the eye it's probably out of spec already, doesn't take much.
  21. What metal tabs? There are tabs that prevent the cap from unscrewing itself. But like a child-proof lid on a bottle of Buckleys (or whatever cough syrup you prefer), push down and turn counterclockwise. Once you get the tabs past their holder it'll turn about a half-turn or so, then stop, and it should just pull off.
  22. Generally speaking there's only a couple things that will cause everything to fail at once, either low voltage (charging problem) or a computer problem (something came unplugged maybe?). I would start small, make sure the charging system's working properly, figure out where the body control computer is, make sure it's plugged in, and that the harness is in good shape. That said I've got no experience whatsoever with that gen Grand.
  23. What problem with the column was fixed? Could the multifunction switch have been left unplugged, or its wires damaged? Does the turn signal stalk stay when you try to signal, or does it just spring back? Regarding the dash lights, forgive me if this is obvious, but have you tried undimming them by rotating the knob on the headlight switch?
  24. I dunno. While yeah it could be a pain if you need something ASAP, the ability to flip through the parts manual, match up images and numbers, and then place your order without anyone second guessing you when you try to order a newer part or something from a different vehicle that you know will work better is pretty good. Lada parts from Ukraine are also pretty reasonably priced, even after shipping. Plus everything is still available cause they're still building them with most of the same parts. Now going to the dealer to find a master/slave combo for my new ZJ is something I'm not sure about.
