You don't need a nut splitter... LOL I THOUGHT this was going to be a rant about Busting peoples balls.. LOL!!! Sears craftsman and others make a neat tool that looks like a socket, but instead of a hexagon shape inside its fluted and spiral. Made to remove rounded nuts and bolts. This kit has saved my arse many times!! My advice, CHECK IT OUT!!!! http://www.ask.com/bar?q=sears+rounded+ ... eviews.htm CW

Just for the record: The 29 Spl is definitely stronger, but this axle gets the majority of its strength from its very stout case and large axle tubes. A lessor amount from its good sized bearings and lastly larger 29 Spl shafts. The comments from other posters, in other threads in the past, proclaiming that the 8.25" 27 Spl axle is only slightly stronger than a D35 is total HOGWASH!!! Even with "only" 27 Spl, this axle is a GREAT upgrade and much stronger than a D35 axle. IMHO, this confusion comes from a lack of knowledge. many conclude that the D35 has 27 Spl and is considered weak, so a 27 Spl 8.25 must also be weak.... :shake: Also as mentioned, simply swapping out side gears and axle shafts you can make any 8.25 a 29 Spl axle. Only last thing, don't forget the 8.25 also contains the dreaded "C" Clips, obviously, making the hole thing a weak, P.O.S. NOT!!! :shake: :shake: :shake: As I see it, there are a couple draw backs to this axle. 1) Limited availability to aftermarket traction devices. 2) Only available up to 4:56 gears. 3) A bit higher overall costs on these parts. IMHO, its an excellent choice for what we do with our trucks. You made a good buy and a very good axle. CW

front axle rolled foward
CWLONGSHOT replied to 603Redneck's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OMG.. don't EVER lift on steering parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get yourself a stilson wrench, AKA monkey wrench. attach it to the axle tube and put your jack under the handle. Gently lift and your axle will easily roll back into position. CW -
Yea, as others have pointed out, I cannot mount the U Bolts that way as I am still SUA. But if you look closely at the last pics, you will NOT see any stubs hanging down. I have skid plates mounted as a lower mount. That protects everything and well as shrouding the nuts from rock rash. CW

What was the word my friend? CW

Remove the front springs and compress and extend the axle and measure. For the rear< i did the same with a set of forks on our tractor. Flex and measure... CW

The crappy inverted "Y" steering is marginal at best stock.. now add a lift and it gets WAY worse. Hit above 4" and its not really a viable option. I recommend the JCR 1ton steering setup. I have installed 4 of them and have two of them on my wheeled jeeps. GREAT product and people!! CW

I really don't think your going to loose much turning radius. My TJ will turn around on a reg street with out jumping a curb and the MJ will do it with about a tires width on the curb on each side. The TJ has about a 95" WB and the MJ about 120". The TJ clears nicely and the MJ just touches at full lock. Like I tell you, I have had these on for years, NO ISSUES!!! Call them up and see what they tell you.... They are GREAT PEOPLE to deal with. Way back when they first came out with this product they had some issues with one part. I got a bad one, bent it good. I called them form the mountain!!! They shipped a part overnight to my hotel. I got it the following AM and was back on the trails just after lunch the following day. NO CHARGE!!!!! CW

Chuck, GREAT LOOKING MJ!!!!! I always loved those rims you have!! CW
-
Sounds like someone backed off your steering stops..... On my TJ it hit just a bit, on the MJ it clears fine. (I LOVE this setup and have it in all my wheeled jeeps) Adjust the bolts out a bit to get clearance. the loss in turning radius will not hurt anything and your U joints in the axles will also live a bit longer.... I fixed my seal on my sliding rear window, changed the oil, checked the tranny fluid and polished the plastic lights. BTW, Meguiars PLASIX is AWESOME for cleaning and polishing plastic lenses!!!! http://www.meguiars.com/estore/product_ ... 's%20Brand)>Clear%20Plastic%20Care§ionID=15101 I didn't have a chance to look or snap pics of the frame. Maintenance of other jeeps and yard work prevented that today... Rain tomorrow..... CW

Any of you boys fixed up a rusted frame? I discovered an alarming amount of rust on the MJ from the back of the cab to almost the top of the wheel well on Pass side and about 8" in front of front spring mount almost to that mount on the DS. I am thinking of making up templates for both sides of both frame rails. Extend steel as far as I can past damage. (8-10" past) Then making patch panels from 1/8" steel sheet stock for the sides, tying the inside to outside with 4 pieces of 1 1/4" tubing thru the existing frame and both new panels. I will also drill many 1/2" holes for "spot" welds along its length. Then adding 4"x1/4" steel stock, I have along the bottom as far as I can. I have about a 8-9' piece. Any suggestions? What did you do or what would you do.... I'll post up damage pics later... I have taken out of service untill this can be repaired.. I am sick over finding this. CW

Hold and a sit down....... I found MAJOR FRAME RUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am near devastation about it!!! I took it off the road until it gets warm enough that I can access the damage, but it doesn't look street worthy as is. I will be putting the TJ back on the road for the short term. SO, the AT's on the MJ come off and go on the TJ. The TJ's 35's go in the shed. I THINK I will be able to repair this, but Its worse than what I can see as there is some discoloration that I am sure of rust coming thru the undercoating. I'm thinking I'll cut out the bad, make up templates. From 3/16 steel make inside and outside repair panels. Drill a bunch of 1/2" holes for welding. THEN, for additional strength, drill for 1 1/4" tubing thru everything in at least three spots. This way I can tie inside to outside AND the "frame" in between. I am thinking the area effected will run from center top of rear wheels forward to the back of the cab. Its REALLY BAD!!!! CW

How to polish or clean up factory aluminum wheels?
CWLONGSHOT replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I cleaned up a couple sets last year and they came out really good. I used A/C COIL cleaner. Spray it on, wait a while and hose off, repeat as necessary. Available at plumbing supply houses. BECAREFUL as this is a ACID!! CW -

HELP DANA 30 INFO NEEDED!!! ASAP!!! PLEASE!!!
CWLONGSHOT replied to BREEZE1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The couple that I have out there are bolted to carriers.. So accurate measurements are not possible... But suffice it to say that they are 5 1/4 to 5 3/16" ctc across the middle. CW -
Well I'll tell you. I have both and will take the 44 any day. Its NOT Stregnth thing as I feel thatthe 8.8 is stronger. But the 8.8 has an enourmous case!! I have drug that acursed thing over half the rocks in Paragon!!! My 44 seems to clear most of them. The 44 is the correct width. Not a huge thing, but one more in the pro 44 colum. Disc brakes.. I like the better stopping on steep grades. I'll take my chances with them offroad. They have saved me more thn once in the TJ. don't overlook the ever important "coolness factor". :hmm: :shake: The bottom line is you will be fine with EITHER ONE!! Save your coin, this is one time I think the cheaper route is just fine!! CW

CWLONGSHOT replied to UNL1MTD's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Good job, looks great!! We know our trucks have ground issues, adding extra grounds is never a bad idea. BTW, You don't need such a big wire for a chassy ground. A 10-12Ga is just fine. :D CW -
