I recently picked up a mint 1988 Comanche Sales Brochure (way cool IMO, I plan to post pics), and that's where I got my info from. Of course we all know to take that with a grain of salt and that from the time the brochure went to press and actual orders were being taken, a lot probably changed in what was available, and/or could be done as a dealer "special order" as you noted. -

ifixit, no such thing as a swb Laredo, at least for 88 and i believe for all years. BUT, that's a little misleading. they just called it a different trim package. in 2wd short bed form, the equivalent could be had as the eliminator, and in 4wd form, the chief. i also learned a few interesting things just recently. you could NOT get the off road pkg AND the Big Ton pkg together. I also realized why i've had such a hard time finding a factory chrome rear. according to the 88 sales brochure, a "bright" rear bumper was available as an option on the Laredo models only. In fact, the only model MJ that came with any rear bumper standard was the Eliminator. Rear bumpers were an option on all other models, including the Laredo. So, like Hornbrod said, a Laredo pkg, even as the top trim level, did not necessarily completely spec an MJ out. But back then, it was not as common for people to walk in a dealer and "custom order" a vehicle like they do today. So, when a dealer ordered a model of vehicle with the highest trim pkg, they usually also added on a lot of the other goodies to make it substantially upgraded over the base and mid trim level trucks. Hence the reason Laredo's are rare because not only were they not built in mass as Hornbrod also pointed out, but they also DID usually have a lot of extra options that just are not found that often on the other models. Like Hornbrod, I wanted a Laredo and patiently looked for over a year before finding my 88 Laredo. In addition to Auto Trader's from 2 regions, I religiously checked every online source DAILY and I think mine was maybe the 3rd Laredo I saw for sale, particularly with full factory pwr pkg's etc. and the only one in decent shape. Of course it's easy to add a lot of these options to your truck now, but you have to find the parts and do the work. Not a big deal for a lot of you, but I'm glad I didn't have to mess with it AND I'm one of those anal types that likes knowing mine is factory. -
Fat Al is down at the store buying carbon credits before he cranks the heat up another degree in his 10,000 sq.ft. house. He's a jack@$$.

Better, still room for improvement though. :laughin: I figured 4.10s on the 2.5, but I was worried I had 3 oh sebens on the D44 cuz at 65-70mph w/30x9'5s she's only turning about 2100-2200 revs. can't imagine w/tow pkg anyone would have put those in there though. 355s i think are perfect for my use. a little help on mpg and still able to tow or haul 3 scoops of mulch! Thanks again...........

Thanks Adam. Next time, don't take so long to respond, ya hear? :D Ok then, while I'm asking, how about an 88 4.0, AW4, 4x4, D44 w/factory trac-lok and tow pkg "B"?

What would be the stock, or most likely, rear diff ratio on an 87 2.5L, 5spd, 2WD w/D35?

I want to know something. When you live in Wisco and you graduate from high school, tech school, college, or maybe it's when you buy a house there, does a Comanche automaticlly come with that? Because, statistically, based on the amount of members here who live in the Cheese state, I'd say 98% of the MJs ever made are there. The other 2% of ownership is divided by those that moved away from Wisconsin but are still within a 4hr drive, and those of us that somehow ended up with one that escaped the herd. Am I the only person who has noticed this?  Cheesehead conversation: "Man, was that awesome that Favre and the Pack beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl?!!!!" "Yeah, that was pretty cool, but not as cool as my 17th Jeep Comanche I bought the other day." Speaking of the Super Bowl, since the Stillers (that's spelled by correct pronunciation for those of you who have never graced the city of the 5 time Super Bowl champs!) are out of it, I am O-fficially rooting for the Pack this year! Favre is da man............

Different driveshaft sizes?
WahooSteeler replied to WahooSteeler's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had thought at first it could have to do with torque being transferred that far, but I don't think that's a concern on a 2.5L, LOL. I'll say this, it be worth getting one from a JY dawg and cutting it down for a 4x4, it's a hoss! -

Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Bueller? -
Man, you guys are harsh! LOL Maybe HE likes it and/or it's just the best deal for him right now. But I would agree he'd come out way ahead if he could sell it himself instead of a trade. I can't imagine what they offered him. If it's a penny over $1k i'd be amazed, and I don't even know what his looks or runs like! Oh yeah, but that's right, nobody here thinks an MJ is worth more than $1500 anyway, at least if they had to buy another one. Maybe if they were selling their own though. :smart:

i don't think 3k is insane at all for a clean low mileage comanche. $4800 might be on the "insane" side, but not $3k IMO.

How much does a 4.0 weigh?
WahooSteeler replied to WahooSteeler's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
if i buy this engine, it's only about 300 miles away, so i don't think it will be too bad, and the price on the engine is cheap enough to offset some of the shipping if it gets $$ -
Pat, if you get the mint MJ, will it be for your Dad's rebuild or are you gonna use it for something else?

The 87 2.5L, 2WD, AX15 truck I recently picked up has a driveshaft on it that is as big as any full size V8 truck I've seen. Yet, my 88's 4.0, AW4, 4x4 driveshaft is probably almost HALF the circumference of the 4cyl 2WD. Anybody know the explanation on this? Just curious........

A list of links for info

x2 on the sticky. i was just thinking the other day there should be a sticky for each common tech thread since so much of it gets repeated. of course, we all like to talk shop so that's probably not a big deal but it would be a quick reference for a lot of things, but this works fine IMO. Great job Rockhound, and thanks for putting in the time to do it! -
Well, I almost bought #3 today, an 88/89? Pioneer LWB, 4.0, AW4, 231 w/131k. It was wrecked in the front but seemed like the radiator and such took the hit. I was gonna keep the motor for when mine dies (211k) down the road and part out the rest. I posted a link in the classifieds since the best part seems to be a very clean looking bed. It's located near Charlotte, so a 10hr round trip for me, which ultimately didn't make sense. Hope this helps someone.........

can anybody tell me what a 4.0 weighs for shipping purposes? For worst case scenarios, assume full engine and harness etc., most likely less the alternator and pwr steering pump. thanks..........
-
so to clarify, you're saying with 3" OR LESS up front you can use the WJ LCAs and still be able to use the stock UCAs?
