Leaf spring Conversion to Cherokee
Geonovast replied to wranglercory's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You'd rather use used, less capacity springs than new, correct springs when concerned with sagging? :hmm: -
3/8 x 16

Which one? (This is an NV3550, but the top bolts are the same) The Torx and Bellhousing to motor bolts thread in from the back into the block. The Top Plate bolts thread in from the front, through the dust plate in front of the flywheel into the bellhousing.

When I bought my 99 XJ, the lock cylinder for the hatch was frozen up too. Not sure what part of it was, but I doused the key in PB, stuck in it, and took it out. Repeated 4 or 5 times, had to redo it again the next day, but it's been fine since.

HO motors aren't as bad because there's no EGR pipe in the way. -
Shortening a long bed?
Geonovast replied to sureshot007's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hacking off the end of the bed will shorten it a bit, but will do nothing for the wheelbase. You will need extensive frame fabrication, and bed fabrication, and some really good welds. The short and long wheelbase frames are not the same - with the exception of the longbed being longer. They're designed differently. You will be much better off finding a shortbed than hacking up your longbed, unless it's already in rough shape and you'd really like a long term project. -
How long were you running a 3.55 axle with the 5 speed? Did you put the 3.55 axle in, or did you buy it that way? If you did put the 3.55 in, did you change the speedo gear then? If you did put the axle in, and the 5 speed trans has its original speedo gear, then you'll be able to simply swap the gears and get your speedo accurate again. A better fix, however, would be to get another 3.55 axle and get rid of the crap 3.07.
-
When you change axle gearing, or tire size, you MUST change your speedometer gear... especially when you go to a higher gear ratio... which I'm a little puzzled by. 3.07 sucks. The speedometer gets its reading from the end of the trans or transfercase, so it's essentially reading how fast the driveshaft is turning. Let's assume you're in 4th (0.79 in the 5 speed), with 215/75/R15 tires You're running 2000 rpms. With a 3.55 axle, the wheels are spinning at 713 rpm, 58.76 MPH With a 3.07 axle, the wheels are spinning at 824 rpm, 67.95 MPH. significant difference. Essentially, the truck will be going faster than you think it is, if you go to a higher gear axle, or bigger tire.

4WD low works but no 4WD high
Geonovast replied to Jomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The CAD disconnects the two pieces of the passenger side's axleshaft in the front axle. This is so the carrier and front driveshaft don't spin while in 2wd. Jeep eventually got rid of the system starting in 91 anyway. Scroll down to my pictures. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=23996&start=0 -
4WD low works but no 4WD high
Geonovast replied to Jomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It is powering the front in 4 lo? You verified this? It's sounding to me like the vacuum switch for the CAD is screwed up... assuming of course, you're still running the CAD. Best fix is to lock it over and forget it's there. -
At least 5 within a 20 mile radius for me.

Opinions on timing oil sling
Geonovast replied to DJM/78's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Why would anyone consider tossing it? It weighs nothing, and would be an unnoticeable reduction in rotating mass. Along with its functions mentioned above, I always saw it as (and this is EXTREMELY unlikely), but what if your crank's timing gear decided to walk forward? Nothing stopping it if you toss that. -
Maybe it's the ricer tach and flashlight for a shift light?

I forget that page is even there, my bookmark takes me directly to the forum.

A few more 8.8 questions
Geonovast replied to 88pioneer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You need to pull the center pin out for the spider gears, then you push the axle shaft IN, and the clips come right off. At least that's how they work on a D35 and 8.25. As for the magnet, I've never heard of something like that. I would think a magnet in a diff would be on the bottom.. -
Pretty sure no 4 poppers got a NV trans... should be an AX-5. And NO. 4.0 and 2.5 use completely different bolt patterns.

Anyone watching the new episodes premiering tonight? I thought the series was excellent, movies were hit and miss. I'm really curious how they're going to be picking it up from the end of Into The Wild Green Yonder. (which they're actually showing before the new ones, I'm impressed).

Help ! 91" Timing chain replacement .
Geonovast replied to DJM/78's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, I've never had a 92, but I did have a 93 2.5, and that DOES have a tensioner. Whoever wrote the book probably go mixed information, because the 4.0 does not have a tensioner. -

92' has a tensioner... -
Yup, the "Print Screen" Button doesn't actually print anything, all it does is copy whatever's displayed on your screen to the clipboard. Your clipboard is what is used whenever you 'copy' and 'paste' anything. Then open up paint, paste it in(the size of the picture will automatically expand to the size of your desktop, and save it. The upload as normal. I use photochop and downsized to 75% for a more forum friendly size. :chillin:

5 spd hydrolic fluid leak
Geonovast replied to green_miner's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
86 is external slave. There should be NO fluid inside the bellhousing. Your slave cylinder is located on the passenger's side of the bellhousing. If there's a leak, it's coming from there, or you blew a hole in the hose and it's dribbling down the housing. It's not that hard to pinch the line between the bell and the motor when you're putting the trans back in. -
Not sure, but I think he's referring to the front clip.
