  1. The engine isn't really any different. The sensors are, so you put the 95 sensors on the 97 engine, and you'll be fine.
  2. CMPS is your camshaft position sensor, it's for injector control. You can't realistically swap the sensors without destroying them, so it's easier to swap distributors. Dizzy = Distributor. I KNOW I've seen those pics before, but I can't remember where from. Could have sworn it was here.
  3. While I'm certainly not opposed to yanking the motor, boring it out, and slapping a bigger cam in it, it would be best avoided at this time. I'm currently not able to pull the motor. I have no flat, hard surface to work on, and my cherry picker is still at my brother's place in Wisconsin. When I get a decent day, and fight with the hood enough to get it open, I'll pull everything apart, take some pics, and see what you guys think.
  4. You should be able to reuse all your old sensors, although you may have to use your origial distributor(if it's any good). The CMPS connector was changed at some point. The cam in the 97 will be different than your current one(other than it being in one piece), but that's not an issue. My brother's 98 XJ has a 91 4.0 in it, and it runs great. Just had to swap the sensors and dizzy from the 98 motor onto the 91 motor. Have you posted these pics before? I know I've seen'm.

    tranny needed

    Uh, what motor?
  6. Taught me everything I know.
  7. Another thought... If I were to pull one of the pistons to inspect the rings and full cylinder, is it alright to re-install the piston with the original rings, or does that require a hone/new rings?
  8. Very good way to twist shackles and break leaves too. DO NOT use and XJ axle with XJ perches and just bolt it on SOA.
  9. IAC is definitely most likely. Does it take awhile to start?
  10. No, last year for the Renix was 90. But that doesn't mean it's limited to Renix. As I said, 3 out of 4 of mine do it. The 88 XJ, the 91 4.0 MJ, and my 99 XJ you can pull the key out whenever you want.
  11. If they ask, tell the truth, but don't bring it up yourself.
  12. That has nothing to do with the cable. The cable prevents you from turning the lock cylinder into the lock position, normally where you would be able to remove the key. Your cylinder and/or key are simply so worn, that it doesn't keep the key in it. Very common with the older Renix keys. 3 of my 4 Jeeps do the same thing, and only one of them is a Renix.
  13. Thanks guys, I'd heard of valve lapping before, never knew what it was, figured it was a machine shop thing. Did a bit of googling last night, and it seems pretty straightforward, so I'll definitely be doing that. What about the bolts I posted? Think those are good, or should I be looking for something a bit more pricey?
  14. Well, in that case, tell her to get out or get over it.
  15. Did you have the truck first?
  16. Sounds like a good test Jim, really nowhere around here I could do it, and knowing my luck, I'd get pulled over for having expired out of state tags. bigd, where were those heads cracked? I've never head of a common head cracking on the 2.5 before. Also, were yours Renix heads? I'm 99.9% sure the 91+ 2.5 heads are a different casting.

    New guy

If he finds an AZ MJ, he shouldn't need the tetanus shot.
  19. Must be seals, I remembered reading that the 4.0 didn't have seals, just deflectors. I'll pop the valve cover off tomorrow and see. Are the seals something somewhat easily replaced, or am I over my head on this one?

    Chat room!...

    Anyone use this anymore?
  21. 1982-1992?
  22. There's a cable that runs up to the switch so you can't take the key out unless it's in park, but I'm pretty sure that's not necessary...
  23. My 91 2.5 has running problems, which I've blamed on the 50 psi compression reading in the #1 cylinder. It also goes through a lot of oil. I'm hoping it's not rings. If the rings are fine, I'm going to change the head gasket(obviously), and most likely the valve guides. Few questions: 1. Is it ok to change the valve guides without an actual full valve job? 2. Anything else I'd need to change in order to change them? 3. I've heard head bolts can be pricey, would I be ok with these? : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0356942460 4. Will this have everything I need? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=124547
  24. Not without a lift, no. You'd probably want to regear as well.
  25. You can get a DVD writer for about $20...
