Any one thinking of getting a beater GAS MISER???

I am... as a matter of fact I'm picking it up later this week..

Its a Mazda 323 2dr hatch back...PO got about 30MPG when he took it off the road.

It needs a few things, exhaust, 2 tires and little odds and ends. All told I will be into it for less than $800. That includes reg and a tank of fuel!! I'll post up a couple pics once I get it, if anyone is intrested...

The MJ is not so good since lifting... 12-15 MPG around town. Far cry form the mid 20's MPG it got with 30" tire's and a easy driving style.

I had a Geo Prizm, but at 160,000 miles it spun a main bearing. While working on it, the battery charger fried the computer. Had just sank about $400 into it, finally fixing a bunch of stuff that needed done years ago. Got $285 for it as scrap metal.

I then bought my 4.0/auto/4wd Comanche to save on gas. My other vehicle is a Suburban, so anything is better. I seem to be averaging about 18mpg, 22 on the highway. Better than I expected. Also planning to ride my bicycle to work some this summer, and if gas goes over $4, I'm seriously thinking of getting a moped. May look like a dork, but you can't argue with 100mpg.

You do know what they say about mopeds, right?

They're like fat women; fun to ride, until your friends find out.

We have a Yamaha Zuma 49cc scooter. It gets used for delivering pizzas and when I'm too tired to ride my bike to work. It gets about 80 miles to the gallon. But only because we drive it at WOT all the time or it would do better. Top speed is about 40MPH. We never even get on the highway so it's all we need. I believe it was $2300 two or three years ago. It's already paid itself off in gas alone because we do about 100-200 miles a day with it. Someone who's extremely bored needs to figure out how much we saved in just gas compared to a car that does maybe 18-22 MPG. Only part that sucks is that if the temp drops below 50 degrees it starts to get cold riding it. But that's just like any other bike.

My Comanche on the other hand is only getting 12-14 MPG in town. I guess it's because I only drive it to work 4 miles and back. Still trying to figure out if that's normal.

I probably save about $30 a week in gas between using the scooter and the bike. But hey that's $120 a month plus $150 extra because I quit smoking which comes to almost $300 dollars a month that I can blow on the Comanche :rotfl2:

Assuming an average day is 160 miles, and gas costs $3.75 per gallon.

The Scooter at 80mpg would use 2 gallons of gas, or about $7.50 per day

A car at 20mpg would use 8 gallons of gas, or about $30 per day

The savings would be $22.50 per day,, $112.50 per 5 day work week, or close to $500 per month.

My MJ is not a DD anymore. I "had" a '94 1.9L Escort that just sipped gas (averaged between 36-40 mpg in varied driving). My wife ended up inheriting her new Subaru due to a death in the family, and I took her Kia Spectra (30-35 mpg) and sold the Escort for $700 cash because we didn't need 4 vehicles. Totaled the Kia last Thanksgiving :headpop: and ended up buying the TJ. It gets 20 mpg average.....not too bad, but I do miss the econoboxes.

I will be selling the Cherokee soon to most likely get something like a jetta. lil 1.8 L maybe if I can find a decent GLI series comes with the turbo and the trick wheels . :D

Should have said something. I just sold mine

I wrote this really long post but when I hit the submit button it dissapeared  Anyway, you won't save any money on gas but it is a great car. Let me know if you need any input on it. I've owned 14 VW's now.

Speaking of VW's, my DD is an 02 GTI. It only gets 28-30 highway with the VR6 but that's a lot better than the 20 the MJ gets. The Jetta/GTI 1.8T is more economical as long as you don't get on the turbo too much.

I'm glad I drive the Neon R/T to work. I'm a fireman that works seven 24hr shifts per month. Work is about 230km away, that's 460km round trip, 3220km per month(2000 miles/month). The car costs about $50 to fill (with reg. 47 Litres-12.4 gal)and that is good for a round trip plus a bit. So that's about $350/month in fuel(just to get to and from work). I remember the first time I filled the car up from empty with "Super" it was $38-that was 2002  . The 'Manche isn't terrible on gas-I've driven worse(grew up drivin my Dad's 60's Mopar Musclecars jamminz.gif ) but I sure am glad I have some little POS to fall back on. :Canadaflag:

Just did a 875 mile trip in the MJ. By holding it a 65 & under I avg about 20.6 mpg. Wife's cadilac with V6 gets about 15/25. So if I see anything really cheap that tops 25/35 I might pick it up as a DD. Otherwise I'm gonna chg driving habits & call my insur co & see if I can get cheaper ins rates for driving less. Chances of that like Snowball in h---.

If you google insurance quotes there's a site that asks for your info. I can't remember what it was though. Anyway, you punch in your stats, it asks you a bunch of questions and your email address. I did it. In a couple of days insurance quotes started rolling in from local agents. I went from paying about $2800 a year for three cars to $643 a year. You just have to wait a week to see who sends you the best rate. $2100 was well worth the half hour it took out of my time. If your in central PA call my guy.

I don't know if he does out of state but it's worth a try. Between all my policies he probably saved me close to $5000 a year

Well I picked her up tonight...

Needs an exhaust, CV shafts, a temp switch for the fan and Tires. Already put in a new battery.

It drove OK on the trip home, many little things to do like bulbs and a good cleaning inside. But I am pleasantly surprised by the room for driver and passenger.

I'm not 100% but I think the motor is the same as a ford probes.

MPGs are overrated. :D That said, my record to date with the Libby CRD is 31.8 on the trip computer. It's most likely a bit higher than actual, but still. That's impressive for something that can tow 5k pounds. In fact, it'll give me 20-21 while flat-towing the 88 (which likely approaches the max tow rating). :D

I've been driving my car, a 6 cylinder '91 Mercedes gas burner, it gets about 20 miles per gallon (not bad for a big car)

112afw0.jpg

I also was driving my son's 'Yota Rav4 til the tag expired (he is overseas in the Navy) no pic of it yet but you can see part of it in the MJ pic

I got my MJ not only for the (hopefully) better gas mileage, 4 slug w/4speed, but also because I need a hauler to bring in stuff for my boat, which it's overhaul is on hold til the truck is done

A '72 SeaBird 19 ft runabout

Maybe, just maybe gas prices will stabilize a bit when the boat is ready, the MJ should be able to tow it the 3 miles to the marina

I'm sticking with my Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L as my DD. I just can't bring myself to drive some little car as I love the power of the V8. I am happy with the MPG at 12 - 14 around town and 17 - 19 hwy 8) .

I will have it paid off in the near future and intend to sell/trade it to get a Diesel 2500 or 3500 Ram to make my DD. :D

Its a 1.6L single overhead cam 4CYL.

I cleaned the engine compartment, changed the fluids and did a tune up on her today... The old plug wires FELL APART!!!! Now it runs really nice, I don't think it even turns completely over before its running!!! Sunday I am going to tackle a nasty exhaust leak form the front header collector!! Also give the rims a new coat of silver paint and get some new tires!!!
