cowl hoods

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna be making a few cowl hoods here soon, using 2 hoods to make one (only 1 seam to weld), and want to know what the typical cowl height is.

I'm not too sure how high I want to go for the 3800. TNT, Beaterjeep, and Geonovast will each be recieving a cowl induction hood from me, and the hood height is their choice. I just don't know what I want yet.

so, since I like just the typical height, can someone tell me how high their cowl is from the "stock" part of the hood?

thanks

My reflexion is 2 inches. Which looks the same as what was previously posted by Geonovast.

I know that each state has different restrictions on how high a cowl hood can be. I think VA is 4 or 6 inches. Can remember which.

WI is pretty lienient about what people can do to their vehicles...I believe when it comes to lift laws WI is one of the least restrictive. They probably don't care about cowls as long as you can see. Most of the cops here probably don't know what a cowled hood is anyway...

In WI 3" high hood scoop is the max legal height. About 2.5" would be perfect for me.

As for lift 5" is maximum. The tires can have a raduis that is 4" larger then stock. Max bumper height is 30".

How ghey is it.... I can run 5" of lift and fit 35" boggers and still be legal no problem...

I guess that must be ghey to run a set-up like that.....

tire size doesn't count for lift. well, not legally.

and I don't see lift height enforced in wisconsin at all.

as for cowl, I'm settled on 2.5" for me. apparently TNT wants that, correy's pretty good with that too.

sounds good :D

4" in radius, equals 8" in diameter.... so I can run a 35" tire legally. :brows:

Here's a pic of a fiberglass XJ/MJ hood w. a 2-1/2" cowl (according to the mfg.). Looks a bit high to me - I like the Reflexxion 2" cowl hood better.

Since swapping out my stock carb/intake manifold for a Holley/Edelbrock combo I have no room under stock hood for air cleaner. I cut out a section of the hood and fabricated a pretty crappy "bulge" but still looking for a permanent solution. Are these cowlings just for looks (tacked onto the top of a stock hood) or do they create addtl clearance?

JeepCo: How much do you think you'll be charging?

Geonovast & mfpdm & all: Where did you get those hoods? Any suggestions? I google and don't find what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

shipping from me would kill you, as it's not a business. the people I'm doing it for are local, and are all supplying the parts plus some time in making it, so I have no problem doing it that way.

umm...so, I don't know what I'd charge.

geonovast doesn't have one, that's just an example. maybe someone will chime in with the site to get them from, but I think they run about $300. if you had 2 hoods and some time, you can make one yourself (like I'm doing)

Ah well, worth a try. I just learned that I have no biz trying my hand at body work. My fab'd hood thingie looks like an upturned baking pan. So if anyone knows where those examples came from... a website would be sure helpful.

Someday I'll get off my arse and post a picture or two... I dig my truck and spend too much $ on it.

well, I could build the cowl part for you and leave enough edge that you could rivet it on, or you can try to tac-weld it in, then do some grinding and smoothing. THAT anyone can do. all I'm doing is rollin gthe corners out and setting height. idk what price would be, $65 plus shipping or so? it'd be less than $25 to ship I'm sure

I picked mine up off Craigslist, however Quadratec has them(LINK) and if you google Reflexion cowl hood you'll find several site's that carry them.

I went with this hood because it is all steel. I had planned to shell out the cash for it from a site, but got real lucky with the craigslist find ($150) and a friend that happen to be going up to Washington DC anyways to pick it up for me.($40):D

Oh, it does provide more clearance too.

Thanks for the offer amigo. Maybe you could build one of those others and post a pic so I could see? I like the idea of saying "Yeah, I got it from this guy in Wisconsin who custom-built it for me" rather than "Yeah, I plunked down a butt load of cash..."

And while I really like the look of that reflexxion hood mfpdm posted... thanks for the link by the way... the cheapest I could find was about $400. Your $65+shipping would be a great deal. I want to respect your time, though. Are you sure that'd be enough to comp ya?

Oh, and to answer your original question, I'd want to keep mine no more than 2" off the stock lid. The 'manche hood is stubby and I think a taller cowl would look funny. My opinion.

I think once I do a couple cowls (I'll be building a jig for it and simply bendingthe edges), it shouldn't cost me much time to make them. just to be clear, I could do just the cowl for that. a complete hood I'd want between $150 and $200 for it depending on time involved in it.

Hey Jeepco you could cut the hole bigger and then tac the edge on the under side of the hood. Tac welds and some high strength glue should hold it up pretty good..
