Nice truck. I see tow hooks under the front bumper. Does it have skid plates under the front steering linkage, under the transfer case, and under the gas tank? How many leaves in the rear leaf springs? Please post a photo of the rear differential cover. You may have the off-road option package.

No steering skid plate, and the only thing under the X member/transfer case is as pictured, plate under tank, but looks like what would/should be under anything:confused: the rear, looks like 4 leaf's, 1st chance I have really been able to look the truck over, even discovered it already has rear disk, and one of the "upgrades" I had planned was Liberty rear disk:dunno:  I just know the brakes are "weak"

Those are t-case and fuel tank skid plates, your build sheet shows it came with the skid plate group which should include a front plate under the front linkage. Many people remove it for easier maintenance access. And it’s not a metric ton so 4 leafs is correct.

Thanks Fiatslug

Probably won't be doing any serious off roading, truck is still too solid and in decent enough shape that I plan on just mild stuff, like a 30-31" tire, stock ride height, don't really want a lift kit, and wanting to get the steering and brakes a little more "robust" thinking about the brake booster upgrade and checking on the condition of the front end, also working on weather stripping and door hardware, I'd also like to find a cluster with tach, It is a solid little truck, and I'd just like to make it what I want:wink:

This forum seems to be a great source of info and help, hoping I'll be able to contribute also:thumbsup:

Sounds like you’ve got a good plan for this Jeep. I like the plan a lot. I’d like to see a build thread started for it. The stock brakes and steering seem adequate for these Jeeps, but being that yours is an 88, I’d swap the Peugeot transmission for an AX-15 and put a Chrysler 8.25 in it. You’ll also want better gearing for larger tires. Right now you’ve got 3.07s. 3.73s or 4.10s would be ideal.

I found a AX-15 w/a NP241 X-fer and bought it, I will do a build thread but it probably won't be as elaborate or as nice as some of the trucks I have seen here, there are some talented members here:thumbsup: I like the idea of a lower gear and with a 30-31" the 4.10's may be the ticket, I like the performance of the buckshots and grip-spurs, but planning on some road time too so I'll probably go with an AT, not sure what plans I have for the differentials, I know I like lockers, most of my experience is with drag cars and roundy-round junk, but as stated I am a car/truck/motorcycle junkie, gas and diesel

Sounds like you’ve got a great plan. I’m liking the route you’re going with the truck. Its pretty much the same as what I did to my truck.

Thanks' 89MJ, I'm thinking about the 8.8 ford for the rear, I have a yard close by that has several, they have some that are open, and a few w 3.73-4.10 gear and LSD, I'm very familiar with 9' fords, but unsure if the LSD 8.8 would be better choice given the availability, I know I mentioned going with a 30-31 tire and noted your signature (and the lift), will I have clearance issues with stock ride height??? I also noted you have 8.8 in you sig. what did you shoot for on pinion angle, one YT'er I watched recently mentioned 10 deg, which seemed excessive to me at stock height, but my drag racing time I typically shot for -3 with a 4 link rear, so I got a little bit of a learning curve here:dunno:, don't want to weld spring perches in and have drive-line issues, BTW, I looked at your Projects and they are very nice, I like the Bolen's and all the rest, but love the COE and the 64 chevelle, also subscribed to the YT :L:

I'll have a bunch of ????'s bear with me:blush:

here's a shot of one of my old "beaters" 1.2 sec 60' and 5.80's 1/8 mi @117

Angles will vary depending on if you're planning on a slip yolk eliminator or not, but it sounds like you're going for a mild build, so probably not necessary.

I've got a '64 &'69 Nova that I've owned the majority of my life. Ha, actually the Comanche as well. I don't sell much.

Driveshaft angles:

Thanks Htchevyii, I've had a couple of chevy ii, and always wanted a BB 69 nova, I did own a 69 sb (406") camaro, but currently don't own any street cars:( and I kind of figured I'd check out the angle of the x-fer case/driveshaft, it was just that I watched one YT'er that stated to rotate the housing up 10 deg, the video failed to address if the vehicle was lifted or not, which made me question being under acceleration and rotation of the housing/springs if it would put the joints past optimum angles and add to low speed vibrations, I'd rather not lift the truck if i can get by with it, planning on that anyway????

of all the 4 X 4 vehicles I have owned, only a few of them have been lifted, and I have limited use of wedges, But the old bronco I had taught me a ton about changing U-joints:laugh::laugh::laugh::doh: and the big tires/wheels taught me about "unsprung" weight and gear ratio's

Thank you! I don’t remember what I did for pinion angle, but it should be within 2.5* of the transfer case output shaft. If you want to go with an 8.8, I’d look for one out of an Explorer Sport Trac because they are close to the width of MJ rear axles. The regular Explorer 8.8s are somewhere around 2” narrower.

You shouldn’t have clearance issues, but you probably will drag the center section of the rear end if you ever play in the dirt. That’s part of the reason I went with the Chrysler 8.25 in my Eagle, the clearance is almost the same with 28” tires as my MJ has with 31s. Another good option would be an 8.25 out of a Jeep Liberty.

That drag car looks fun. Drag racing is something I’d like to get into some.
