Skid plate year comparability

Recommended Posts

I have what I was told is a late model front skid plate on my 89 XJ.   I don't know for sure but I believe they are the same except for a few extra holes along the front lip on the later ones.   Hopefully others can confirm this.

I think the front skid does a pretty nice job protecting the steering linkage and pumpkin at stock ride height but it does get less effective as the truck is lifted higher.

It's decently thick too.  If you smack into something hard enough to dent it, you'd be glad it was there to take that hit instead of your steering components.

The problem with the front skid is it snags rocks and trees while 4 wheeling after you go over something and try and back up, it acts sort of like a barbed fishing Lure never wanting to let go, personally I just rock a gas tank skid on my xj, and soon some custom tcase ones as the stock one is basically just something to look at rather than protect your Jeep. It barely covers anything

If you do grab it, can you post a picture of it? Not sure if I’ve ever seen one??

Here’s a couple pictures, ignore the half primer, I never got around to finishing it.
It’s pretty thick for a stock skid plate, but again hooks on things, this is just destined for my chief as it came with them originally.
