Anthi4078 Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 Hey I just saw a factory front skid plate off a 99 XJ pop up near me and was wondering if it would fit on my 87 or if CryCo changed it. Thanks, Andre
PCO6 Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 I have what I was told is a late model front skid plate on my 89 XJ. I don't know for sure but I believe they are the same except for a few extra holes along the front lip on the later ones. Hopefully others can confirm this.
cruiser54 Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 Fronts are the same. The transfer skid plate came in a couple of versions depending on the trans/transfer case combo.
Anthi4078 Posted September 19, 2023 Author Posted September 19, 2023 Ah ok thanks guys, I’ll go pick it up today then
cruiser54 Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 Is it the front one? An FYI if it is, all that skid plate guards is the inability to work on your truck. In the way for performing numerous repairs.
DesertRat1991 Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 I think the front skid does a pretty nice job protecting the steering linkage and pumpkin at stock ride height but it does get less effective as the truck is lifted higher. It's decently thick too. If you smack into something hard enough to dent it, you'd be glad it was there to take that hit instead of your steering components.

Drahcir495 Posted September 19, 2023 Posted September 19, 2023 If you do grab it, can you post a picture of it? Not sure if I’ve ever seen one??
jpnjake Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 The problem with the front skid is it snags rocks and trees while 4 wheeling after you go over something and try and back up, it acts sort of like a barbed fishing Lure never wanting to let go, personally I just rock a gas tank skid on my xj, and soon some custom tcase ones as the stock one is basically just something to look at rather than protect your Jeep. It barely covers anything

Here’s a couple pictures, ignore the half primer, I never got around to finishing it. It’s pretty thick for a stock skid plate, but again hooks on things, this is just destined for my chief as it came with them originally.
Drahcir495 Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 Thank you . I’ve never seen one. I will have to start looking out for them when I’m junk yarding.
75sv1 Posted September 20, 2023 Posted September 20, 2023 I picked one up a few years ago off of E-Bay. Haven't installed it yet. I forget what I paid. I was also looking at it as an air dam.
Eagle_SX4 Posted September 21, 2023 Posted September 21, 2023 Yeah it should also help keep your alternator dryer. I think it might help pull some hot air out the bottom(when you are going fast enough).
