Rhys Chalmers Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Just wondering if this is a LSD. Axle is a dana 44 with 3.07 gearing. Both wheels spin the same direction when turned! Thanks 20230531_233144.mp4
speeding_infraction Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Just an open diff. If you apply enough pressure to one of the wheels only one of them will turn.
Eagle_SX4 Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Pretty sure it is a limited slip the open dif housings are round on the end. Here is a screen shot from a different forum talking about limited slips in a tj.
AZJeff Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 You can see the clutch packs (partially) in an LSD housing. Those are not present in the photos, so that is a traditional "open" differential.
gogmorgo Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Not necessarily. Some diffs put the clutch packs between the spider gears and carrier, often only on one side of the carrier. It’s maybe not the most effective solution to traction but it’s cheap. Same basic principal most selectable lockers use, just lock one side gear to the carrier. If the OP has both rear wheels off the ground and the driveshaft free spinning, and both rear wheels turn in the same direction, that’s a strong indication it’s a limited slip. As is the “square” cylindrical end to the carrier, like was pointed out above.

Not really sure what to tell you there... it's literally how Jeep's Trac-lok limited slip works. Clutch packs between the side gears and carrier. Nothing unusual-looking compared to an open diff until you pull the side gears. Start watching from the ten-minute mark if it doesn't cue it up for you.
Eagle_SX4 Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 You can see the channels for the clutch pack "ears" in the second picture from the op. Pretty sure it is a limited slip.
AZJeff Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 I guess I learned something new. I always assumed the normal LSD looked something like the attached photo inside. I guess I was wrong, and there is more than one way to make an LSD, and some of them don't show the clutch packs so obviously.
jpnjake Posted June 2, 2023 Posted June 2, 2023 Here’s what my xj 44 with factory lsd looks like you can see the clutches hiding just behind the spiders
AZJeff Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 1 hour ago, jpnjake said: Here’s what my xj 44 with factory lsd looks like you can see the clutches hiding just behind the spiders That's what I am used to seeing. I guess just because a diff. has LSD does NOT mean it will look like all other diffs with LSD. Everybody who makes an LSD carrier does them a little differently.
pizzaman09 Posted June 3, 2023 Posted June 3, 2023 Lucky find. I have a D44 with LSD as well, it works wonderfully, can easily spin both rear tires or cause nasty axle hop depending on load and tires I have on it.
