It was very cramped with the WilderNest down. My wife slept on the truck bed (on the mattress) with one dog and I slept on the drawer (foam pad) with the other dog. There isn’t much headroom on top of the drawer but it is what it is. The only change I would make is keeping stuff a little more organized making the move down quicker.

I replaced the bumper mounted hitch receiver with a Draw-Tite MJ hitch, it was too unstable/wobbly feeling. I flap disked it to bare metal, gave it two coats of Por-15 and two coats of Rust-Oleum satin black. Used 1-1/2” inch zinc plated perforated square tube as spacers and bolted it to the WilderNest. The support jacks will now use the hitch. Also got a dual hitch extender so I could offset a foldable step (think I need to extend it to the left a little more) for entry into the WilderNest which folds up for travel.

I got tired of scraping my hands on the wing nuts that secure the hi-lift jack so I made a couple of knobs for it. I couldn’t find M12 knobs but luckily had some M8 ones from a previous project so I pressed out the nut, drilled it to the smaller diameter of the M12 nut, heated the nut and pressed it into place. Not very technical, but makes it much easier to install/remove.

I cut apart the dual hitch and extended it by 8” from 7” to 15” using the leftover perforated square tubing from the bumper & hitch installs. I used the 1-1/4” tube inside the 1-1/2” tube, that sucker will never deflect! Also cut down the part that slides into the receiver and drilled for the hitch pin. I like it much better offset so the step doesn’t interfere when I’m opening the drawer.

Painted the interior yesterday. Used Duplicolor Sandstorm bed liner for the sleeping platform, the stuff is horrible to spray, the cans stop spraying, start dribbling and leave a third of the product behind. I don’t recommend using it at all. The bottom portion was going to be the same bed liner but decided on paint. Also, all my stainless hardware arrived so assembly will begin after a few days of paint curing.

would you happen to have links for the stainless hardware? I began stripping my camper yesterday.

We’re at New Hogan Lake in Calaveras County, CA. Lots of loud geese out here, gives the dogs something to chase. The step is working out great for both dogs and humans. Got a little Mr. Heater Portable Buddy heater to lessen the morning chill in the WilderNest, runs on propane. Weather is nice, 70° and blue skies.

Added a couple of things to make camping a little more refined.

We had a 10lb propane bottle that attached to the FJ Cruiser that we no longer use so I decided to use it for the Buddy heater instead of the 1lb canisters. I drilled a hole in the wheel well for the hose which is plugged when not in use.

Here is the tank on the FJ which is how it's transported, freeing up space in the trailer.

When we set up camp we now swap the propane tank for the fire extinguisher keeping it close to the cooking area, it's also on a quick release so it can be moved to the campfire or inside the WilderNest easily.

The setup inside the WilderNest, you can see the hose going into the bung in the wheel well.

And outside.

image.jpeg.a7e2b6a6bb7fa4a336d6c4639eb8917b.jpeg

Made a telescoping light standard using a camera monopod attached to a PVC coupling mounted on the tongue with a hose clamp and secured with a small quick fist at the bed lip. Added nutserts and screwed a garden hook to hang a light (sorry for the terrible exposure).

Added a shower tent to the FJ, it mounts to the roof rack and is easily removable.

The nozzle attaches to a foldable arm that stays on the roof rack and is attached using a small quick fist making it adjustable.

All this worked out quite well camping last week. Now to come up with new projects.

You’re running out of amenities to add . I enjoy seeing updates on this thread. It sure would look great hooked up behind the white truck too, like the pic in your sig.
