Combined symptoms

I know there are many, many posts about stalling and many, many posts about high idling. If these issues occur at the same time, does that help with the diagnosis?

 

(88 4.0 Pioneer Auto, Renix) I have been dealing with an intermittent high idle on startup for some time. Only at startup and mostly on warmer days. Opening and dropping the hood seems to correct the idle. I know, VERY technical solution. Recently, it stalled while sitting at a light. (First time stalling, BTW) Started again, ran a bit and stalled. I had some nice folks push me out of the way because it would not restart. After many attempts, it did start. Seems like it may stall while sitting at a light, pressing the brake, but no stall if just idling in Park. My work around has been to shift into Neutral if I have to sit for awhile, then back to Drive.

 

I have already done the ground refreshing stuff to no avail.

 

Again, does experiencing both the conditions mean something specific?

Oh I had high idle when in park with my truck! That sounds like your TPS is off. My money is on that or IAC. If your opening and dropping the hood and it "corrects" it then it may be jarring the sensor back to where it should be position wise. When I had the high idle issue I got impatient and upset and I just bought a new O2 sensor, air filter, IAC and TPS and had them all installed at once. Idles smooth as butter now. I can't confirm for sure but it sounds like you may be running very lean for it to stall

I haven't had a sec to troubleshoot. After Dec 6, I'm hoping to carve out some time. I don't have a garage, so that doesn't help.

 

My latest symptom to add is an odd cranking pattern if I start and stop a lot.

Yesterday's example: 

Stopped at Dollar General, shopped a bit, started no problem. 

Stopped at Lowes, shopped a bit, started no problem. 

Stopped for gas. Turned over about four times and then started turning VERY slow. Like it was freezing cold or something. I gave it a rest, tried again and it was fine.

Stopped to pick up Chinese food. Turned many times before catching.

It seems to not do well with a lot of restarting.

Yeah cruisers tips are a life saver. The guy that works on my truck is on here and uses them, and used them on my truck. If I may ask what are you idling around? When I first started having issues it was borderline screaming at me [I also had 2 vac hoses loose] then after that is went down dramatically BUT still had high cranks. It would rev about 1000-1100 then go back down. I would drive it. Totally fine then park it. Then it idles back up. And I should also note reverse would jerk...hard. So hard the truck would lurch backwards. Afterwards I had said fix. Doesn't do anything of that nature. Half the time you can't tell it's shifting unless your listening for engine pitch. Reverse you can feel when shifting back to it. But doesn't jerk and lurch. I also wonder if maybe your MAP is possibly off? Because the way I'm thinking about this is that if it was a vac hose it'd be screaming at you like mine was at me. Then again it could be a tiny pinhole leak. It's hard to say. These are just the things that come to mind. Maybe your butterfly valve is dirty causing it to stick open?

Crap! I'm a liar. Rechecked the tips list and I haven't done 5. Just 1-4. I guess that goes on my ever-growing list of troubleshooting.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am back at checking it out today since the weather is very nice! I did buy a stethoscope, but I don't know how to use it to find problems and I'm actually kind-of scared to be poking that probe around a running motor. LOL! Any directions on using it to find leaks and squeaks is welcome.

That's what I figured, but thought there might be more to it. That means that while the engine was "chirping", the probe offered no help. Not yet, anyway.

belt chirping?  that might not show up with a stethoscope.  another method is a 3' length of tube.  put one end up to your ear and probe around with the other.  don't let it touch anything though. :D

I did #5 today. I am not good at all with a multi meter and the one I have is a Harbor Freight special. If I did this right, I'm showing a just under 2 ohms and it's steady. Wiggling the harness has no effect. Image attached. Then I did #6 and it does seem to idle smoother. After reading #7 and #8 I decided they may be too technical to tackle today. I am definitely intimidated by electrical work.

 

BTW, opening those dang wire looms in a major PITA!!! :furious3:

 

Also checked the throttle body and it looks really clean. Didn't need much cleaning. No sticking when moved manually. My occasional high idle must be something else.

Don't know if it's a belt. Only really happens when it's cold outside and definitely when it's cold and wet. It was suggested that I check the harmonic balancer. That's why I bought the scope. However, I'm not clear on how to check it with the engine running.

Multimeter set for Rx100Ω. Reading shows ≈200Ω's. Set meter to Rx1Ω. Ohm readings need good batteries in the multimeter. Check them.

Harmonic balancer doesn't even need to be that bad to cause a squeak. I had one that took a while to track down, intermittent chirping. I put a new belt on it with no effect, cranked the snot out of it, that did nothing. Turned out to be a bad harmonic balancer, it had just enough wobble that the belt was slapping the timing cover, slowly sawing through it. Didn't even look like the rubber was coming out like the above.
