Rear bumper

Just looked at their site: I cannot tell if it comes with a frame reinforced receiver hitch, or if it is like the stock bumper, and just bolted to the frame ends?

It's a true bumper hitch where you install a ball. There isn't a receiver.

Guess I should rephrase the question:  does the Fey Westin bumper - with integral ball mount - come with reinforcements to tie it to structural frame members more robustly than the stock bumper with ball mount?  I can't tell from the pics provided on the site. The stock bumper is extended/cantilevered behind the main hollow frame members about 12", with a maybe 3" tapered u-channel with side plate for reinforcement and connection just above the shackle mounts.

I quite like my Fey bumper.  A previous owner installed it.  It appears that they used one set of bolts to a stock mounting point on the frame, then plug welded through to the frame from one of the other mounting bolt holes in the bumper.  It's very solid, I've towed much heavier loads than I should with the bumper mount ball.

So the bumper comes by itself. You have to buy the bracket kit separately. Removing my stock brackets wasn’t terrible. There were 3 welded nuts on the frame that bolt the stock bracket too. One bolt was a bit challenging due to the location. After that the new brackets bolt to the frame with 3 bolts. Then you just bolt the bumper to the bracket. Was pretty simple to me. I would say though there are just hitch ball holes in the bumper. I would not tow with those. If you want to tow anything I would install a hitch. That’s just me though.

Thanks for the detailed responses gentlemen.

Back to the OP...

A Cherokee Bumper will not - from what I have read - fit "directly".

That said, depending upon your weld and fab skillsets - or your buddies - almost anything can be modified to fit. But it would be a lot of work.

Better would be specific MJ Bumpers.  Some I have looked at online:

Dirtbound:

Manta Ray Rear Bumper - Jeep Comanche MJ - DirtBound Offroad

Uphill Manfg:

MJ Comanche Rear Bumper 1986-1992 – Uphill MFG

Affordable Offroad:

Jeep Comanche MJ Rear Bumper - Affordable Offroad

All of these pretty much use the stock bumper mounting holes in the frame, with their own connecting hardware/brackets.

Need a rear bumper. I am familiar with the Fey bumper and brackets. Several websites call it a Dakota/Comanche bumper. Will a Dakota bumper (87-96) bolt on to a Comanche? Looks like a Fey bumper with brackets costs around $300+ if I buy them cheap, but I can pull a decent Dakota bumper from a junk yard for much less. The bumper only needs to be in condition as good as the rest of the Comanche after all.

If a Dakota bumper fits, will it attach to the Comanche with the Fey brackets?

Wait a bit and shop around if you want the Fey/Westin. I got mine for $140 shipped a few months ago, either off ebay or Amazon.

Yeah, I saw that on Amazon recently too and I'm kicking myself for not buying then. But I was committed to getting mechanical issues fixed before cosmetic though, and it's biting me now.  Which is why I ask about the Dakota bumpers.  There are some decent looking Dakota's in the junk yard if that rear bumper will work.

The Fey/Westin bumper is not a "Dakota/Comanche" bumper, it's a universal bumper that fits all compact pickups. That's why the bracket kits are sold separate from the bumpers.

The one that fits the Comanche is the 63000 series in black, and the 73000 series in chrome. Both are available from Amazon.

The Fey/Westin 63000 bumper is $176 on amazon right now FYI.
