Dash differences I've noticed

Recommended Posts

So I've looked at a few of your guy's trucks and a few online for sale and some in YouTube videos. I have noticed a lot have actual gauges and such. All I have is lights. I have a speedometer and gas gauge and that's it. I just noticed how I haven't seen any other dash like mine, I didn't know if more were out there? I have a battery light, gas light, oil light and coolant light. A very peculiar way to have things set up on a truck from factory, but hey it's very cool in my book! I also ask this question because I have had people say "check your gauges for your motor temperature" I don't have a temp gauge, then I get the look like I'm crazy. Just a general question, that's all, thank yall!

I'm by no means as knowledgeable as some of the other people on here, but here's what I can tell you. A lot of the lower trim and earlier Comanches had these simplified clusters. Any cluster from a 84-90 XJ or MJ will plug right in to yours. In 91 they went from a cable speedometer to an electronic connection. If you find one and wanna swap it into yours, the only thing you have to do to get the new gauges working is install the new oil psi sending unit (by the oil filter) and the water temp sensor(back of head next to the valve cover). I did this in mine. One thing to note however, I'm pretty sure the tach won't work if you swap a cluster from something with a 4 cylinder or a v6, possibly other gauges too.

Ahh I see. I'm not looking to swap necessarily, I just started looking and it hit me like "why do I have no gauges and everyone else does" and this explains it all. It's neat! I like the setup I got albeit it may not be as on detail as what is going on. Very unique to me. It's also funny showing people I have no gauges and them going "I'll be damned your right!" And get a good reaction out of them

That's really all I want yeah, but hey if I see no steam and the hood isn't burning my hand upon touch hey we good! Just a very....I guess primitive way to have a dash set up? I've never seen one use mainly lights. Hell my grandfathers '65 impala had more gauges than this thing by a long shot lol. It really just sparked my curiosity and I'm glad I have yall as a group. Super helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Couldn't ask for a better group!!

How rare are those? I'm pretty sure I know where one is

The ones that are plug n play with 87-90 are very very rare as they were in 87 only Jeeps. 84-86 got them but they have the different speedo but they are getting increasingly rare too. Just the tachs die from the old components on the board. I wish I knew how to fix them. I sent a couple off to a member on here but that was almost a year ago. I think @scaleless got them.

The Dodge Spirit had a a similar lack of gauges.

My first Comanche, an 88 SporTruck had the same setup as your's.  A previous owner installed a set of A pillar gauges, tachometer and coolant temp.  I found them nice to have.

Hopefully I can get it then, that is assuming it even works.

This is super interesting. Love how different gauges were made for certain ones. Only thing I can't figure out is mine is a Pioneer. Pioneer and I assume the Eliminator were top of the line back then? It's odd to me that I have standard gauges while others had different ones? I have the upgraded steering wheel factory too. Everything is factory except my hoses, coolant bottle and soon to be radiator. Any idea why they put that gauge on my truck rather than the other one? Because I know there's like the base model, Eliminator, sport truck and Olympic edition and Pioneer. You would think higher up on the trim you go the more different parts you get?

Oh... yeah that was me lmao.  Was it really that long ago?  Wow.  I need to actually finish that project.  They've been sitting in the "to do" section of my lab desk for ages.  I should probably bump that to this weekend's project.

I can definitely send one to Warren if you want to sell one to him.  As far as I'm concerned they're still technically yours.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt but if I'm wrong about anything I'm sure someone will correct me. Pioneer and Eliminator are both some of the more common trims, neither super high but definitely a step up from base. Eliminator is basically the "sport" version, I believe they are always 2wd and have bucket seats. Pioneer I think is usually 4wd but not all of them. SporTruck is pretty much base model I think. Laredo is THE top trim and pretty hard to come by. Comanche Chief is basically a bunch of added options. In 1986 only, there were 3 trims; Custom, X, and XLS, going from base to top trim in that order.

I'm not interested in one, thank you though.

He is alive!!! Hahahahaha I actually wasn’t expecting you to respond right away. But hey I’m glad you still have them.
I don’t mind doing that, that being said, the cluster he said he found will have to be the one that will take those tachs. When you get them done, you’ll have to school me on those so that way I can collect and fix them.

Haha yeah I'm actually keeping up with the threads here a little bit, I've just been too busy to post.  But I have email notifications on for mentions and such so I won't miss any of those.

Hopefully we didn’t hijack the thread too much.

Eliminators and XLS and Laredo are the top trims and the most rare.  Pioneer, X and Chief are middle.  SporTruck and Custom are base models.  Not all these trim levels existed in every year.

but you could order just about anything onto a lower trim.  I had a base 86 with AC, the bigger engine, 4wd, and the metric ton package.

the majority of all Pioneers were 2wd.  Eliminators were all 2wd until (I think) '89 when they could then be had in 2 or 4wd.

Oh that's cool! Yeah Mines a 2wd. Usually when you think of a Jeep you think of 4x4, but the 2wd is a good change. Just a fun little town truck. I've been meaning to ask about the trim models but got sidetracked with other things. I know for sure there is a base model in my state, 3 pioneers and one sport truck which had vanished. It was black with orange and red accents
