Injectors leaking gas

Recommended Posts

With the onset of cold weather I just noticed that my 2 front injectors on my 1989 4.0L MJ are leaking gas. Can this be fixed by replacing the o-rings or is it possible that they are leaking from the body of the injector and the injectors themselves need replacing? Thanks for any assistance.

Its possible, but likely just the o rings.

With a bit of common sense and some simple hand tools, you can do this your self. You can get a "O" Ring kit at the parts store and fix these pretty easily. Get everything out of the way and all the wires off the injectors. Then do them one at a time. One tip, clean off the area around the injectors REALLY good. you don't want any junk falling in the open injector holes.

Don't drive it this way!!!!

Good luck,

Don't drive it this way!!!!

x 10!

A friend of mine lost his MJ that way. He knew the injectors were leaking, so he drove it to the dealership to buy the o-rings. When he walked out of the parts department, the truck was in flames.

Happened to me in a xj I had a long time ago....

I smelled gas pulled over next thing I know I was running for a fire extinguisher.......

I had a squirting pressure hose on the power steering too. I think that helped in the fire.

You need to fix that ASAP the kit is only like 16 bucks from the dealer.. don't let it burn to the ground!!!

On other tip...

Put a very light coat of grease on the o-rings before trying to insert them back into the engine and rail. I forgot this step and a couple of the o-rings ripped just a tiny bit and leaked worse than when I started   .

After replacing the o-rings on all 6 injectors I found the leak to be in the body of 2 of the injectors between the plastic section and metal section. My guess is that the expansion and contraction of the two dissimilar materials created a leakage path. Anyway, I had a spare intake with injectors and replaced the two leakers with a couple newer ones. Interestingly enough the 1989 motor had black plastic body injectors and the 1990 motor injectors had a white body. Additionally, the 1989 injectors used black o-rings at the top of the injector and brown ones at the bottom, whereas the 1990 model used the same o-rings top and bottom which is what the replacement GP Sorenson kit had in it. Hope this helps someone else out in the future. Look closely for the leakage path as it could very well be the body of the injector.

Glad you got it done!!

Looks like you learned something as well!!

Like I said, its likely just the O rings, but could be the injectors them selves. The differences you noticed will not hurt a thing. Likely different sources threw the years with different composits. Good thing you had the spares, those injectors are not cheap!!!

Glad you are safe again  .

I purchased a set of Ford 19lb injectors on eBay for $20 and used them to replace the old ones in mine. When I found the leak, I discovered that it had three different types of injectors in it so I decided to just replace them all. The set I got were out of a 4.6L Mustang...slightly used, but in great shape...and...8 of them for $20 :D .

So if different color body injectors mean different flow rates I guess I should have changed them all out from the black bodied to the white bodied injectors. If it's not too much work can anyone verify what color their injectors are and what year MJ? It seems to run the same so far, I'll let everyone know if it behaves differently with the mixed injectors.

i had the same problem....drove home and got out only to smell gas...popped the hood and injector 5-6 were leaking...so i replaced the o-rings and then found the regulator was bad now...so i go to replace it and the retarded p/o jb-welded it on...so i was off to find a new one...got the new fuel rail and everything was good...

now i run refurbished 5.0 injectors with new o-rings and i have no leaks

Been smelling gas odor in my 89 4L for awhile. Last night ran to store & on way back odor got extremely strong. Got home & popped the hood & gas was blowing out of 1 & 2 in a stream. So much couldn't tell if it was the seals or bad bodies. I went to NAPA & picked up (8) MPF3-12085 (brown & NAPA brand) & (4) CRB2-15004 (black & Standard Brand). Had to mix & match as thats all they had. Anyhow, put them in this afternoon in about a hour & half & leak & odor gone. All 6 rail seals were perfectly flat on outer edges and had leaked some previously it appears.

  • 4 weeks later...

A guy in the club replaced his XJ injectors with those out of a 5.0 mustang. He bought them used off of eBay. They were rated at 19lbs. (As with any used injector, the o-rings and pintel caps should be replaced and the injectors cleaned prior to installation.)

The main difference that I remember about this swap is that the Ford injectors are more of a one-piece construction instead of the 2 piece the MJ/XJ ones are. Less prone to leakage and a little cheaper than the factory units.

Hope this is an option some of you have heard of.

This is a very viable option that I have used personally. I am in the process of setting up a deal with a company that remanufactures these injectors and sells them at an excellent price. He is going to have a special set up for me to pass on to all of my Jeep friends with a discount code to buy these injectors. I can't say what it's going to be yet as he has not confirmed it, but the price that I know he sells them at without the discount is already good.

I will be making a special post about it with the info on how to buy them and the discount code for Jeepers as soon as he lets me know...which is supposed to be Monday or Tuesday :D  .

After reading this post, I freaked out. The Comanche around the corner from my work {know, I know! I will put a CC card on it} caught fire. I get home and there is a strong smell of gas in my garage. So, in a panic, I order 6 refurbished 5.0 injectors off ebay :brows:. Get the old ones off, they looked ok, with only one O-ring tweeked. I installed the new ones without any problems, but I could still smell the gas pretty bad. The guy next door stops by and says "what is that coming off the weed wacker by your truck?" Well I found my gas leak .

It's all good, the Comanche runs great and I can sleep now

Hey Confedneck  , I'm outside the Tampa area. The number of Comanche club members from Florida is gaining momentum. Have you had a chance to go out to Avon park and wheel? I hope that someday we will be able to have a local Pow-Wow - Rich

I know of at least 6 of us from Florida on here now.

As for the injectors...I am still waiting for the confirmation that the site is ready with the discount code, but I will post ASAP when it is set as I have received and responded to a couple PM's about it.
