904 auto trans Dodge D100 slant 6

Recommended Posts

Pete M the 4 speed is all new with new clutch set up new slave cyl. Done by P.O. Only issue is I have a 13 Wide foot. I'm 60 years of age and done shifting.

Cruiser54 I thought the 2.5 was a Chrysler engine for 87. If so they kept the Iron duke rear bolt pattern?

Thanks guys for the info. Here is my Manche soon to be a lot lower rolling on 18 inch wheels 2018 Dodge Charger toxic orange paint with power steering and hopefully find a Auto trans to bolt up to the 4 banger.

The AMC 2.5 is not an Iron Duke, nor is it a Chrysler engine. It was first introduced while AMC was still sourcing the GM 2.8, (and mostly planning to phase out their straight sixes) and so the AMC 2.5 also ended up with the GM metric/ small corporate/ 60°V6 pattern, whatever you want to call it.

Jeep’s choice of automatic behind the 2.5 was the AW4, same as the 4.0, matched with 4.56 gears. You might be able to find the bellhousing to do it, but they’re pretty rare. Failing that, I’d be looking at pulling something from an S10, other than the 2.2, or any other RWD application Iron Duke 60°V6 if you don’t mind 2wd.

The Cherokee, as far as I know, never saw the AW4 behind the 4-cylinder. That was only in the MJ, and I'm not sure all years were made that way. The 205L Cherokees used a Chrysler 904 automatic transmission.

From what I have seen, I do not know if the Chrysler auto trannys used a TCU(I don’t think they did) but under the AW4 section of the parts catalog, there is a TCU for the 4 cylinder. Albeit very rare as most folks just opted for a manual or the 4.0L with an auto at that point.

When I did some design work  on a transmission bellhousing, there were SAE standards. So, a #1, #2, #3 etc. The trans specs from say ZF and other transmission makers seemed to follow them. One Automaker had their own pattern.

If you can find one, the 1984-1986 XJ and 86 MJ got the A904 auto. Its a non overdrive 3 speed. They can be made fairly reliable with a shift kit. The AW4 would be much better as a daily as its a 4 speed with overdrive. Both will be hard to find used, but you might get lucky with a rebuilder having one in stock. If you can adapt one, yes, you can probably make a GM transmission work. The 4L60E as used in the Camaro and Firebird behind the 3.1, 3.4, and 3.8 might be a good choice, or better if you find one that isnt electronically controlled, but youd need to research that.

I appreciate all your input. Wow didn't realize very limited options. The little guy is 2WD and would like to keep it 2WD. I guess worst case but major improvement would be chuck the 4 banger drop in a 4.0 HO with 2WD AW4.   New 17 inch Jeep Patriot wheels added, dropped 2 inches in front 1 inch rear . Guess I should start a build tread.

Did you need to do anything to make the wheels fit? I was looking at them a while back as a potential source of 17" Jeep wheels, but everything I looked at said the centre bore was too small.

The 17" steelies on base model Chrysler and Dodge LX cars- Charger, Magnum, 300, Challenger will bolt right up and have the same hubcentric center bore size. Using that I would assume all other wheels from those cars would fit as well. Backspacing might be an issue, but I don't really, know. I do know that Ive seen them used before.

Yeah I've also seen them used, but they aren't OEM wheels that say Jeep on them, and I have my eccentricities.
