I bought this same exact cat four or five years ago for $215! I know prices are increasing but this is crazy. Now I’m getting worried with all the thefts going on.

pretty sure that's a typo?    basic cats can still be found for under 100 bucks.

Nope, that’s the Magnaflow web site, not a typo. Even a Walker CARB compliant one on Rockauto is over $600.

It could also be they jacked up the price because they are out of stock and don’t want any orders they can’t fill. I see that on eBay sometimes.

Why are you replacing it? If it’s just dirty unbolt it, or cut it off, then soak it over night in hot soapy water and the next day wash it up by rocking the water back and forth past the honeycomb structure. Then just wash it out with the garden hose. It’s worth a try over paying a ton of money. Oh and what every you do don’t try those snake oil cat cleaners they sale. It’s a waste. A good tune up and fresh oil should help with emissions.

Not replacing at the moment, my neighbor’s cat was stolen so I was just curious of the replacement cost in case any of mine get hit.

I'd say about 80 bucks plus whatever plain-box shipping is from one of us.  

 

I'm all for saving the planet, but 10 times the price does NOT get me 10 times the cat effectiveness.

Yes, if do need one and prices for the CARB ones are crazy I’ll buy a non-CARB one, ship it to someone out of California and have them ship it to me. I’ve done it before for other stuff.

I noticed on the internet someone selling “cat cages” to “prevent catalytic converter theft”.  Looked like it might slow a determined thief down by as much as 2-3 minutes.

I’ve been running stainless steel spun cats for a few years now. Under $100 all day long. I assume they aren’t carb compliant but I wonder what the actual efficiency difference is. Personally, I appreciate less fumes especially when I’m wheeling.

Some of the raw steel I buy for our shop at work has been up 500% at times. Unfortunately not surprised at all.
