Front Fender Liners

Recommended Posts

IIRC, your MJ has aftermarket fender flares on it, and I assume you then have your front fenders trimmed to accommodate larger-than-OEM tires.

if that is the case, you can do what I did.  I bought 1/16” ABS plastic sheets on Amazon that were 12” by 24”.   Two pieces would be needed to make each splash shield, which becomes part of the fender flare that extends inward into the wheel well.

I cut and trimmed the 2 PCs to follow the shape of the inner part of the flare.  Then I used a heat gun to form the curve of the fender opening.  I the attached these pieces together in a butt joint with “pop”  rivets.  Then I attached the now curved flare extension to existing flare again using pop rivets.  I overlapped the extension on the aftermarket flare by about one inch.

The flares, once reinstalled, extend inward about 6-7 inches past the fender sheet metal edge, and this protects the entire area between the body structure and the inside of the fender.  The result is much stronger/stiffer than an OEM splas shield.

I can send pictures if you are curious.

I recall this being discussed in the past.

I bought some replacements off Rockauto several years ago.  Fit was bad.  Gaps left between the liner and fender flares.

I think I remember Don saying he had ordered replacements from Rockauto and had good luck with them.

I still have a pair of the ones that didn't fit well.  Bought two pair, put one set on my XJ.

Keep on a lookout for late model (94ish-96) originals like Pete said.

Look for "inner fender"

Good info, thanks y’all. I’ll probably go the diy route as @AZJeff suggests. The shipping on those liners from rock auto to me is $120. I hadn’t realized how much those splash shield help prevent rust until recently.

Holy molly man! Ive shipped a set and I don't think it even cost that member that much to get them. Course you are in Guam so that might hike the price up.

Resurrecting this thread instead of making a new one. Just ordered some new front fender liners from RockAuto (https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=683371&cc=0&pt=823 and (https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=683391&cc=0&pt=823) as well as another site (https://www.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/jeep-xj-87-96-cherokee-mj-86-92-comanche-84-90-wagoneer-front-fender-splash-shields/). Figured I'd test the fit with both as they weren't too expensive.

Do you still happen to have pictures of these? I wasn't able to find the rear splash guards so I'll likely have to make them myself.

I just purchased these.  Haven't installed them yet but they appear to be good quality and I imagine them to be thicker than the reports I've read about others.  Made in Taiwan.  They're more expensive than the Rockauto ones but Rockauto doesn't apparently have control over which manufacturer is the seller.

Here are a couple of snaps of the front splash shields I made.  The black part is the aftermarket flares I have on the MJ, and the grayish black part is what I riveted to extend the flare inward into the wheel well to function as a splash shield.

I purchased the RockAuto ones and was quite pleased.  Maybe not a perfect fit but I didn't have any trouble installing them.  They are 100 times better than the originals which were massively broken up with holes or just plan missing.
