GritHound Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 I may have a movie casting for my Comanche but they are asking for 87 or earlier vehicles. I have a 1990 Pioneer. Are there unique differences in the year that can be identified externally between 86-90 Comanche pioneers? Mirror, rear window, etc?
Jesse J Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 I know that you would need the 1986 to early 1987 COMANCHE badge edit: all though mines an 87 and has a lowercase
87MJTIM Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Most likely would be any stickers and possibly color options.
fiatslug87 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Front grill is 10 slot for 87, if bench seat '87 did not have head rests, and as mentioned some paint and interior color differences. Your truck has the Marchal lights which is an '87 thing, so that's good. Just swap your grill.
Jesse J Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 although. seems like only very eagle eyed comanche people will notice
GritHound Posted January 6, 2021 Author Posted January 6, 2021 Just now, Jesse J said: although. seems like only very eagle eyed comanche people will notice Right. I'm not sure how much of a stickler they will be, but the badge and grill would probably get me. Depending on the level of interest. I may just change them temporarily.
Jesse J Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 I think you could keep the badge but swap the grill out. mine is an 87 born in 86 and it has lowercase
87MJTIM Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 I am not sure about the grills. Mine has the 10 slot grill. I picked up an 87 XJ with the 8 slot.
Jesse J Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 and you can just temporarily take out the headrests no reason to get a new bench
WahooSteeler Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Hey, don't give in on negotiating your contract with the movie company. After their 3rd or 4th offer, just slide the paper back across the desk and use the always powerful and highly successful negotiating line....."don't lowball me, I know what I've got".

I'm more of a "Either give me what it's worth or it's going to the crusher..." kinda guy.
Pete M Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 very, VERY few people in this world would ever be able to tell an 87 from a 90. and I'd wager half of them are on the CC. I'm assuming this is for a movie that is set in the year 87?
Jesse J Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Yeah like pete said. also everyone who can tell the difference isn't going to care that much

fiatslug87 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 The question was "Are there unique differences in the year that can be identified externally between 86-90 Comanche pioneers?" not "would anyone notice." 1 hour ago, 87MJTIM said: I am not sure about the grills. NHMJXJ Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 I'm surprised it took so long for someone to state, essentially, who would actually know what model year it is? Unless the plot of the movie is about cars/trucks, it's unlikely anyone would even mention it wasn't a 1987 truck. Except a CC member. It would be great to see your truck get some exposure, so keep us posted!
eaglescout526 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 It’s easy and hard to tell. 86-87 were the only years for the 2.5Litre nameplate. 4.0Litre was 87-90. The location of the 4x4 badge is also a thing. Grill is an obvious one for most as are the Marchals as sometime in 87 AMC switched to the ROLs due to Marchals going out of business. Another plausible way to tell is the rear bumper doing away with the license plate light bezels for the later years. Otherwise all are externally identical. My 88 has an 84-86 only 21 slot grill.
Pete M Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 the hockey sticks came out in 88. BUT, they would have come out in the second half of 1987 as an 88 model year. also, my 87-90 parts manual shows only the cab location for the 4x4 badge.
eaglescout526 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 Wasn’t 86 the only model year with the 4x4 on the rear end of the bed or was that the later years?(I know I can look at the catalog but work is busy)
fiatslug87 Posted January 6, 2021 Posted January 6, 2021 The 86-87 parts catalog also only shows them on the rear of the bed.
