(D44) Somebody pinch me!

Recommended Posts

Never thought i would see the day where i can say my MJ will have an OG dana 44.

Just bought tonight for $175. Complete drum to drum with E cables and bracket. 3.07 w/ lsd.

Now, what do i do with it? 🤨

Currently have chry 8.25 with custom length driveshaft.

How do i get brakes/gears? Can i convert to disk? Should I? Converted Chrysler to disc and really like it. Can the LSD be serviced/rebuilt? Will the driveshaft i have work?

Will post pics tomorrow.

Is this the one in Lake Worth the seller thought had 4.10s? I have been talking to that guy for 2 days on FB and offered above his asking price to secure it plus pay shipping of course. I asked him to confirm it had 4.10s but never heard back, guess if it has 3.07s that's why LOL! Good for you, looks to be a good low mileage 44!

LOL.......I was interested only because supposedly it already had 4.10s in it. I have a factory D44 w/3.55s and TracLok, plan to go to 4.10s in the future so at that price I was willing to pay shipping and still come out ahead IMO.

ghet, not sure of the year but seller said the truck had 106k on it

congrats!

the 44 was offered outside of the metric ton package.   :L:

there's a disk writeup in the link in my signature.  your 8.25 lengthed driveshaft should work fine with it.  :grinyes:

I checked out the DIY in your sig. Even the "easy" disc conversion is pretty involved. I converted my 8.25 to disc, but that was a snap in comparison. I think i might just keep the drums after all.

Nice score!

The *416 number on the tag is tied to 87-90 model years. There may be a build date for the axle stamped on the passenger side axle tube.

When you pop off the cover you should be able to spot the six digit birth date for the R&P printed on the ring gear [XX YY ZZ].

Good to know. :L:

to find the ratio you can either pop the cover (which you really should do anyways to change the gear oil) and read the ring gear, or you can hold one side still and spin the other drum around twice while counting the times the pinion spins.  3 times = 3.08  3 and a half = 3.55s etc.

Sorry pete. Should have been more clear. I ment where do i buy gears. Brand and such. Are all dana 44 gears created equal? What should i look for in a kit?

If you want to swap gears you will need the D44 Ring & Pinion gear set and a D44 Master Overhaul Kit which includes the necessary bearings and seals.  Keep in mind that the D44 carrier break is at 3.73/3.92.  This means that if you want to move to a gear ratio of 3.92 or higher then you will need to buy a new carrier as well. For a complete refurb, consider replacing your axle shaft bearings and seals as well.

What to look for in gears?  Variation in R&P pricing is mostly a marketing scam.  The vast majority of R&P gears are sourced from the same, small community of global foundries.  Look for US or Korean made gear sets.  Avoid China.  Look for a good warranty from the seller.  For bearings, both SKF or KOYO are solid choices.

Your factory Trac-Lok limited slip diff is a clutch-style design, and likely will need need a replacement pack. Usually less than $100 IIRC, and recommended to replace every 30-50k depending on terrain and usage. If it's hitting the pavement 90% of the time you probably get can more miles between clutch packs. If you are doing a lot of wheeling etc, you'll need to replace more often.

  • 2 months later...

Sorry to hijack but this seems like a good place to ask a D44 question. I'm on rockauto today and I'm looking for a set of drums for my rear axle....does anyone know if the D44 had 9" or 10" drums on the MJ?  I've got a '92 if that matters.

There's a rebuild kit, 2 drums, 2 wheel cylinders, and all 4 shoes for less than $100....seems like a screaming deal if it'll fit.
