Jaime Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Hello, I am trying to replace the Door lock cylinder on my 88. I tried Autozone, Napa, & RockAuto. They all have the generic cylinder that doesn’t seem to work. Does anybody know where I can get a cylinder that does work?
eaglescout526 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Mopar or team Cherokee has the right ones. But the Mopar one you have to assemble.
Jaime Posted April 20, 2020 Author Posted April 20, 2020 Do you by chance have the part number? The more I look into it on both sites the pictures just don't seem to match what I have.
jdog Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Picture of what your looking for? Different people call things different

eaglescout526 Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Actually I still may have my aftermarket set. I can go consult my parts catalog and post the number.

I am struggling with that right now. I bought some (90+ locks thinking I could transfer the levers over from a pre 90 cylinder. No dice. Now I am on the hunt for some old 91 locks so I can grab the levers. In 93 the lock changed again so the 91 key won't work with a 93 - 96 they are fatter. None of the 91+ locks come with a lever attached. Omix don't make a 91+ lock assembly. The 93 plus locks are available but you can't use them either with a pre 90 lever. So it is really hard to upgrade from a single sided to double sided key setup. Ignition locks are much easier. Pretty much interchangeable.
Jaime Posted April 22, 2020 Author Posted April 22, 2020 I went to 4WP store here in Vegas and ordered a lock set from Crown. The picture showed the same lock that I have, with the lever. It will get here in about a week and half. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Limeyjeeper Posted April 29, 2020 Posted April 29, 2020 Just for future reference for somebody. Pre 91 lock cylinder Part No 83505067 Black J8122874 Chrome. 91-92 lock cylinder 4637581 1993 4730931. Pre 90 cylinder kit comes with lever. 91-93 does not. Pre 91 lock on the left 91-92 lock on the right. 91 cylinder is much thinner, smaller lever and double sided key.
boxyjeep Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 I got a bunch of cylinders from the junkyard and am going to key them all to match my ignition cylinder. Re-keying shouldn't be too tough.

If that's correct (and I have no reason to doubt him), what you want to do is impossible.

Sorry, should have mentioned that. To add to this, you could likely remove the 6th tumbler from your ignition cylinder to match your door cylinders.

Just took a look at my two original keys side-by-side. Looks like the door key had a blank spot closest to the key ring end. You could probably remove this tumbler from your ignition and key tumblers 1-5 to match.

It wasn't worth it to me to waste money trying something that the professional had already told me couldn't be done.

I was in the shop to buy locksets for my house, but I took the opportunity to ask a professional about the possibility of converting my '88 to a single key vehicle. He had nothing to gain by telling me it couldn't be done.
Jaime Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 I got the lock set yesterday and installed them today. They work like a charm but what a pain to install. I also installed some window sash that I got at the junkyard. And look what I found behind one of them door panels. You can’t read anything but it’s there.
Basajeep88 Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 I know this is an old post but it helped me out. I was able to find a lock set on Amazon for $38 using the part number 11813.02. Thanks for sharing.

Salvagedcircuit Posted March 27, 2023 Posted March 27, 2023 Oh boy. It looks like I purchased the Standard Motor Products DL-22 locks for my '88 comanche. I have to stop trusting rockauto on part compatibility. Now to check if mine have the tabs on back....
boxyjeep Posted March 27, 2023 Posted March 27, 2023 Go to a junkyard and grab a bunch. Then take them apart to re-key to match your key. Don’t ask how I know 😂
JZLAJeep Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Dusting this thread back off... We have the passenger door panel off for replacing the insides of the door. We've never had keys to the door lock cylinders and are considering replacing the locks before replacing the vapor barrier and reinstalling the door card. Would be nice to be able to lock the doors, but so far the condition of the vehicle, millennial anti-theft device 5-speed transmission, and general honesty of people in Idaho have worked well enough... This thread and this other thread have been helpful. It appears that the following parts are all the same and will work. https://tinyurl.com/4366sbv6 https://tinyurl.com/4yxraaz7 https://tinyurl.com/3nc62zy6 I have read that the door lock cylinders can be re-keyed. We have a door key for our CJ that could pull double duty as the door key for the MJ too. If we re-keyed, what are some beginner level instructions for doing so? Ultimately, our options are: Continue to ignore the non-working door locks Replace the lock cylinders Re-key the existing lock cylinders
