Need opinions on removing broken stud

I've had a vacuum leak at cylinder 6 and found the last stud missing. I just removed the intake and exhaust manifolds and can now see the stud is broken about 1/8" below the surface. I don't' think I can get a drill, even a 90° drill in there due to the firewall bump out. What would you guys do? 90 4.0L

Remove the bolt at the driver's engine mount.

Unbolt the trans mount at the xmember. 

Jack up the engine a couple of inches. 

Slide the trans to the driver's side an inch or two. 

 

You'll have all kinds of room and a better angle. 

 

 

And if you have one and are worried about it....remove the mech fan.

Just by looking at it I can't see that the lifting/tilting method would give enough clearance, this is also a manual so the shifter would need removal(?). I'm thinking of pulling the head, is this crazy?

I just fixed my CJ7.  It had a broken stud where the steering gear box mounts to the frame.  I ended up on my back drilling the bolt out.  One broken drill bit and a CRAPpy HF tap-n-die set and problem solved.  Yeah me!

I have done this many times in the past and it has worked probably 80% of the time. This would be my starting place, if possible.

If it failed I would pull the head and remove it on the bench, probably by drilling.

SUCCESS!!! All it took was a drill, a 90° flex shaft attachment, a fresh 1/8" bit, a screw extractor and an extra pair of hands (wife's) to run the drill while I worked the bit end... in 92° weather.
