I've noticed a small cut on my passenger seatbelt, and neither seatbelt will "lock" in place so its time that they are replaced. All the threads I've found have old/outdated links. I would prefer new over ones from the junkyard, just due to the fact that at best, they are 18 years old (if from a newer XJ) and at worst they are 30.

After I posted that, I looked at the classified section and figured they were the one and same. Thanks Pete.

I've been told that it's illegal to install used seatbelts in a vehicle used on public highways. I don't know if that's federal law or state law, but I do know that no junkyard in Connecticut will sell a seatbelt.

well, according to my 87-90 parts manual it appears that 2door belts are different than 4dr belts which are different than MJ belts.  :L:  2drs have a funky inner attachment point so they should be avoided.  4drs look very similar except for the attachment bit on the lower outside but it should be close enough to work.

Do you know if the fitment on these belts is correct?  These guys have been on my list to research.  Product looks really good.

So, instead of buying readily available new belts, someone would have to obtain and modify a used seatbelt more than two decades old.

I think the types of people that make those types of choices end up injured and in hospitals frequently.

Anybody got any NOS belts in AMC black they'd be willing to part with?  If not, I'm going to get some new belts.

The 4 door XJ belts look correct to me.

Guess one of us is going to find out sooner or later.

Roger that.  You've got a head start by quite a bit.  Mine won't make it into the garage for teardown until summer.

I've found seatbelts through car-part.com. I don't imagine junkyards would inventory them if it wasn't legal to sell them.

When the buckle failed on my MJ I found one yard that wouldn't sell me a seatbelt part due to their own liability policies, but I then turned around and bought a couple at another yard in the same jurisdiction. I am north of the 49th but I doubt that has much to do with it.

It's unlikely a junkyard belt is worse off than the one you're replacing, especially ones that retract and don't get much UV exposure. But given the option is usually better to go new on safety gear if you can... you just don't know the history of the old gear. I wouldn't pull belts from a vehicle that shows signs of a front end wreck, for example. Those have clear evidence of thorough use, and while belts aren't necessarily single-use, you just don't know after they've taken collision stresses once.

The 2-dr XJ belts attach to the outer side by hoop that slides over a bar. They're way different.

Has anyone confirmed that the 4-door ones are the correct ones to order? I'll be doing some other interior work here soon (new mirrors that actually adjust, fixing gear selector, fixing parking brake light) so if i can get these ordered that would be great. Also, any ideas on the replacement for the lap belt? I use that currently as a way to ensure the dog is strapped in well.
