Paint

Recommended Posts

I'm doing my own body work and prep for spray.

Locally, I could not find a single shop that would do a full paint, good shops only do insurance work.

If you go to a custom shop..........you could expect to pay $5-8K and it will likely sit there for 6 months to a year.

I just found a second shop that is willing to spray mine (backup to the first). Both want $2K (that's with me supplying all material, paint will cost about $1200, I'm about $400 into material now, primer/sundries). Second shop tells me he will have it at least 3-4 weeks, mine will be fill-in work behind his high-end builds he's painting. That's the problem with custom shops, your $8K MJ is last on the list behind their $18-20K paint jobs.

Also, finding a shop that is willing to risk their reputation on YOUR body work is not going to be easy.

I myself used rustoleum automotive spray cans and prepped and sprayed it just like you would using real paint.  In the end it turned out like a cheap MAACO job and only cost me $200 and a weekend.  If I used a real spray gun with better paint it would of course turn out better.

If you take your time and do it right, you can make any paint look good.  If you feel confident in your ability to paintor your ability to learn to paint, I'd recommend doing it yourself.  The cost of even the real equipment to do it at home is wayyy less than paying a shop and it will give you the experience so the next time you paint, you'll be more confident and already have the equipment.  You'd never have to pay for a shop to paint a car again.

Like stated above, any shop you can find is going to have your truck for quite some time and it will cost you an arm and a leg.  Maybe even both legs.. Because you'll be kicking in their door wondering when it'll be done..

My 92 was at the paint shop for 3 years. The painter ran an old school shop who has been building show cars since the 70's and would only accept perfection. He also did insurance jobs along side my truck. The work included new floors, rockers, battery tray, cab corners welded in and dents/waves removed. I also had the 97+ firewall mods welded in. The paint work cost $$$$ (triple what I bought the truck for and I dearly over paid for that).

Has an engine sitting in it and is very dusty. I lost steam on this truck 2 years ago when I couldn't get some interior bits to match the quality of the body work. I think my break from it is about over :)

Thanks Don. It is Colorado Red. My paint guy said the Colorado Red was some of the most expensive basic red paint he had mixed. I don't know the science behind it, but I do know the paint laid down very nice!

For price comparison (as of yesterday):

I had Maaco quote my "well loved" MJ... 2100 for body work and enamel only, no clear.

400 just to spray it.

I reputable body body shop advised it would be well over 4k.

I have a significant amount of damage to the bed only (no rust, just dents).

I recently spoke to a shop called American Auto paint in Renton WA who quoted me 2k for spray and clear coat. Also said he would take out my two small dents. I failed to mention the bed is a little rough. I think that might be the best option. I might do the Maaco $400 just to keep it protected for a while until I raise the money for the good stuff. I have lots to do before paint anyway. I need to buy a lift kit, wheels, tires, and get the seat re done.

Thanks for the feedback about prices.

I've had a vehicle in a body shop for almost 4 yrs now. It sat out side for 1.5 yrs. I did see it yesterday. I even talk to a few lawyers. Things can go bad.  I did take it to another shop, but couldn't justify the $5K at that time. I was quoted $2.8K from the one shop. Check to see if your state has an 'Automotive Repair Act'. Or other laws. Definitely, do not walk out of there without a contract as to the work to be done. Might state time frame too.

As for prices, yes it can go way up depending on the quality. I think the first shop was talking about $8K or more for really nice. Mine included some body work. I think a bit more than expected. A good paint, no body work would have been $3K.

Might see if there are any vo-tech or other schools that do Automotive body work. One of my brothers business partners has a son who runs one in another state. My Comanche might make it there, if I get back on it.

Sounds like you sank a ton of money into. Don't get to hung up on perfection. Good is good enough some times. I can get tangled up in the perfection thing, almost obsessive about it. In my life it can slow things down looking for that perfect part. Get it up on its feet and then worry about perfection. That's some unsolicited advice. I've gotten burned out on it too and had to give it a break. I hope your able to get that fire underneath you started again and get inspired, then back to it soon. Good luck to you.

  • 3 weeks later...

Coincidence?  Just saw a post on FaceBook/WA 4x4 exchange from a guy in Spanaway that is looking to do some painting.  Mickey Booth.  Pictures look like he does a good job, but I don't know what he charges.  I thought about it, but I'm way north of Seattle and don't want to go that far.  You might try him.

Another option.  I talked to Maaco about my stripping everything off the truck and dropping it off to get their best paint job.  Mine is rust free with a few door dents and they quoted $1500 which includes the minor dent repairs. Our discussion included removing bumpers, trim, grill, taillights, etc...

I'm in parkland, and my neighbors has a paint booth. I think he charged set89 1k or a little more for his mj. it was a budget paint job so there were 2 runs I think, but that painter now works at Boeing and he has a new guy doing the work now

Look for a rental booth if you feel you can paint yourself.
I'm on Whidbey Island and we have a few shops here ranging from sweet 10k 2 year job to the probably dirt floor barn both for a couple hundred.
Do your prep work and take it to macco eventually that's what I'll do with my super clean 88 Cherokee and my 88 MJ.
