Perhaps expanding upon the "MJ Tech" section. sub forums for "trouble shooting / general maintenance", "modified tech talk" "engine swaps" and a sub category for "97+ swap"

That's not a bad idea. It also makes the limited search function a little more useful (eventually, once enough new content is added).

Moderators will have to expect to move threads fairly often. But that's part of the job. :rotfl2:

Just don't make too many subforums that it becomes overwhelming.

This is a good idea but do we really see that many varying topics? I feel that the subforums for the more uncommon things like "engine swaps" are less likely to be seen by the vast majority, and the less you have to click around, the better the experience imo. I don't feel like the tech section moves all that quickly.

Subforums would make searching a lot easier however.

Some guys don't care to read or answer the basic maintenance questions, but are more than happy to muse about things like axle or engine swaps. IMHO they tend to then pick a subforum or two and spend a bunch of time in it, and actually provide more content then if they just take a quick look in the tech and see nothing they feel like reading and move on to only return a few days later. But, yeah, it's a matter of finding the right balance.

Some places split it as stock tech, and modified tech, which is generally a decent balance. Other places add a body/paint/interior section beyond that. And others an electrical. The problem then is if a guy has something like a 97+ question, what section does it go into? It's modified tech, but using stock parts, and it also affects the body/paint/interior, and the electrical system if he's really going all out. So you have to be careful what you choose for subforums, and make appropriate ones for the more common niches, or at least put a note as to where such questions should mostly go.

One thing I will point out with the way the sub-subforums are displayed currently (such as the "Popular threads" one in The Pub) is that they get little traffic as they are not accessible from the main forum directory. Also, with it being up near the header by itself, which is a somewhat uncommon thing in modern forums, some people will skim past it while scrolling to the actual subforum. I do this, I think I've clicked on that sub-subforum only 100 times or so total in all the years I've been here.

Personally I think tech could be split to a few more subforums, as long as it was done right. Then sticky some decent posts that cover the most repetitive of questions in each...

Well said. I'd agree with this. You mention the stuff pinned to the top of the page, which reminded me of something.

I love that this forum has the new posts at the bottom.. I hate reading a thread where the new posts are at the top and you have to scroll up and down to read the thread. NAXJA is an example, I can't stand it.

nope.  should be doable.   the keys are keeping the forum software that we can get for free and then keeping a handle on the photo use (hotlinking from this site eats into our monthly bites).

as to splitting up the forums more, the philosophy I've used so far is the fewer the forums, the more eyes will see the questions.  besides, there are 24 THOUSAND threads in tech.  :ack:  I'm not about to go through them all to split them up.

oh, and the "popular threads' forum was just something I threw together for newcomers.  threads that had a bunch of responses on topics like "share a photo of your truck" or "what are your other hobbies".  something to browse that would have otherwise gotten lost or needed a sticky (and no one likes 30 stickies on the first page).

Yup. Leave it alone. Tech is fine just how it is.

Agreed. Tech should stay tech!

Pete,

Clearly photo hosting is number 1 for the long term.  Would think it should not allow 3rd party hosting on other sites.  That will drive up non Comanche Club traffic and suck a good bit of band width.

Next, a better search function.  Maybe it is just me, but I don't know how to search within a group of search results.  Trying to say,how to "refine" the search results.

I am willing to share the costs to pay for the work to be done so it is not a burden for you or the mods.  Other members need to step forward to share the cost burden also.

I agree with johnj92131. He should share the costs.  :laughin:

Seriously, I'd be willing pay an annual membership fee. Would help weed out the riff-raff. And I fall in-line with everyone else who wants photo hosting. For me, wanting to look at a mod or repair thread only to find the images are no longer linked, kind-of sucks.

things are happening!  stay tuned for your countdown to the down-time (I'm sure there will be some issues, there always are with this many 1s and 0s flying around)

also, I just learned we should be getting https security. :D

How much down time are we talking? I can't go long without my fix....

We will be testing the transfer and upgrade process like did many years ago. There will be a test web site up for people to verify things work 100% before we wipe it and do that actual transfer.

Why don't we make the funding easy? Everybody send $5 to Pete via PayPal "money to friends" - if Pete's OK with that and will post his PayPal or if he will give it all who PM him. What isn't used for the upgrade can be held for annual costs/maintenance.

What a simple concept.... I love it.

The total cost is????

unknown.  best guess is about 150 a year but it all depends on the data flow from hosting our own photos.  I have enough funds to get this party started, but will never stop someone from donating to the cause.   paypal ID is: comancheclub@hotmail.com

Is there a way to post this funding idea to the membership in general? I would be glad to propose it to everyone if it can be done. Or, one of the admins can make the proposal. Either way, my $5 will be on the way today.

when all is up and running smoothly, there will likely be a perpetual donation button on the main page or the top of the page or something along those lines.  that way when people don't see it and ask anyway I can just send them to the top of the screen. :D

Pete:

Great idea!  Another forum I belong to (TDIClub) sends an annual "renewal" notice for donations.  I got my renewal and hit the "PayPal" donation button in a minute.  Done, Easy.

My donation is on the way right now.

Pete, does this image hosting service do resizing? Most of my pictures start out very large and are resized to be smaller. Imgur makes this very easy, but is this something that our new photo hosting will do?
