airspeed Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 I will never paint a car again as long as I live. This is one of those projects you start and then down the road you ask yourself, why did I ever do this? What a mess that makes in the garage, dust, dirt, paint, in the garage and in the house, my wife is still mad at me. The body work is not so good, it had severe hail damage. I put a new hood on it but there is still ½ gal of bondo. The paint came out real nice, single stage acrylic enamel. Image Not Found
DirtyComanche Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Looks like it just rolled out of the showroom.
Automan2164 Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 That white/black trim has always been a favorite MJ combo of mine. Great looking truck. (This is my OCD... I have to say something... Was resisting... The 4X4 emblems are a bit too high.) :peek:
DirtyComanche Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 (This is my OCD... I have to say something... Was resisting... The 4X4 emblems are a bit too high.) :peek: Yeah, they're closer to being inline with the door handles, eh? Mine doesn't have the emblems since it's a 2wd, well, rare front wheel drive model...
Minuit Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 If you don't get them exact it looks off. Same with the fender badges, too. Does anyone have measurements for where precisely the badges are supposed to be? You can kinda see it in the pic, they should be pretty much level with the door handle. That's why I haven't done a 4wd conversion on the 91 yet, I know I'd spend days just trying to get the stupid badge right :D Yeah, that's why. But yeah, that paint job looks fantastic and the 4x4 badge doesn't take away from that at all. Very well done
airspeed Posted November 13, 2016 Author Posted November 13, 2016 I realized the error after I installed them. I can pull the emblem off but that 3M VHB tape will not come off the new paint.
fiatslug87 Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Truck looks great, I'm sure you'll be out of the dog house soon. Does anyone have measurements for where precisely the badges are supposed to be?

Yeah, I wouldn't risk it. You could try in a couple months when the paint is fully cured, but even then it might not go well.
johnj92131 Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Airspeed, I am with you on garage/DIY paint jobs. Never again. I did a couple with my dad more than 40 years ago (dad was a professional commercial painter, Including painting wings on F4 Phantom aircraft for McDonald-Douglas). You really need all the professional equipment, including a proper paint booth. Way too much work and MESS for me. The final results look good and only you know about the filler on the roof. As for the emblems, check with 3M for a glue remover. As other have said, let the paint cure properly, then use the remover 3M sells. After that you should be be great.

DirtyComanche Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Interesting. I now doubt my entire life. It's like the Berenstain Bears thing.
Minuit Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 In real life, I've never seen them not in line with the door handle. Only ever seen them right up against the cab vent in the brochures. Although personally I've always liked them better in front of the taillights like on the 86s and 87s. :dunno:
Strokermjcomanche Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Interesting ...here's where they are on the 17k mile 1988 pioneer that has original paint and never messed with ...
Wiggilez Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 At some point my mj was repainted from a nice red color to a fugly orange so my badges are all over the place. Or missing in the case of the mj badges.
krustyballer16 Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Interesting. I now doubt my entire life. It's like the Berenstain Bears thing.I'm with you on the BerenstEin Bears thing And all the door jambs, underside of the hood and bed and inside panel of the doors and ALL the body work was done in my parents little 1 car garage. It sucked.
